Four years and a few month after our first strip, we are back in Norway for a second trip on the Coastal Express line. It's a "Christmas" trip, there will be some deviations from the usual schedule. After an uneventful flight to Bergen, we board M/S Polarlys, a relatively recent ship. We walk around the ship while we wait for departure, which is delayed as we wait for passengers less lucky with their flight. It's cold but not more than in France, there is a lot more snow but people are fine with it.
We set sail at 11.15pm, the city lights disappear slowly.

Dear Sophie, you+ve taken some of my dream trips :) I am planning on going on the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Tromsø next december and it was inspiring to see someone else passionate about the polar light and the nordic winters. I saw on trip advisor you recommend the trip and am seriously considering it :) I was in Iceland last February, and though they don+t have polar nights in the south, the lack of light didn't bother me in the slightest. The weather wasn't too rough, though. What kinds of precautions should one take for the nordic weather in December? Are regular snow clothes (inner and outer layers) enough, you think?
Hello Rita, thank you for your appreciation. The temperature along the Hurtigruten route are not that cold as the Gulf Stream is heating most of the coast (except Barents Sea, after North Cape). So expect temperature around 0°C or a few degrees below. You don't need snow clothes per se, think layers, your snow inner layers will be good, your outer layer needs mostly to be windproof as the wind can give a feeling of cold. If you don't want to buy new gear your snow clothes will work (maybe snow trousers not necessary). You always have the option to go back inside the ship if the weather turns rough. Hope you enjoy your trip!
Sophie, thank you for these photos and your poetic words. You have convinced me that a December voyage on Hurtigruten is indeed a wise plan. We went on the Polarlys last September and loved those days. Now we will go north instead of south!
(I hope you do not mind, that I pinned your excellent report and photos here on Pinterest, here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/38702878032451513/ )
