We don't have the pleasure of Martin's voice announcing that it's 5am today, the wake-up call is at 8.15 and breakfast is on at 9. We are moored in Grytviken, and once again the weather is grey and it's snowing on and off. Very different atmosphere to my previous visit in December 2013.  Grytviken is a former whaling station, and the buildings have been preserved and made safe for visitors. There is also a wonderful museum and a small (but very-well stocked) shop. At the bay's entrance, on King Edward Point, you find the local authorities (under the responsibility of the Governor of the Falklands, and ultimatelythe British crown). They mostly have in charge the fisheries policy, and environmental watch. There is also a small research station. People only live here in summer.

The weather turns to fascinating and scary at the same time. It's a succession of snow and wind showers, generating "whitouts" (= you don't see anything at all). The scenery disappears and reappears. Between two episodes of blizzard, I try to make way as fast as I can towards the beach, and when the wind comes back I have to crouch to avoid being swept to the ground. It's hard to describe the atmospher, it's so powerful and beautiful.

Our second landing of the day is from 16.00 at Saint Andrews Bay. It's an important landing site, as it hosts one of the most important king penguins colony in South Georgia. I've added the site on the map.We come ashore on a very large beach, and you can see the main colony in the background. It takes a little bit of walking to reach, but the beach itself is already pretty crowded.

As I said, Ocean Harbour has hosted a whaling station for a couple of decades at the start of the 20th century. There are some traces left, a small building,  some rusted machinery and remnants of oil tanks... They are now considered as historical artifacts, so they should not be moved. Some may think it's not looking nice, but I find them moving and I enjoy these testimonies of human history, even if it's not the most glorious history. Today of course it's full of animals, the now usual fur and elephant seals and penguins (mostly king). And the site is spectacular (it's still snowing, on and off).

Martin wakes us up again at 5.00 to let us know that we can go back to sleep, as the sunrise landing is cancelled (because there is no sun, and plenty of snow falling). OK, it would be nice if this didn't turn into a bad habit... As yesterday, second wake-up call at 7.30, breakfast at 8.00 and landing at 9.00, we are getting very well organized. This morning we are in Ocean Harbour (see the map), a very beautiful location (there are very few not beautiful locations in the area), and which I find really interesting because there are some remnants from the whaling era, and especially the wreck of the Bayard. We are offered a zodiac tour around the wreck, I manage to catch the first one.

During lunch we keep sailing towards the South/East, and everybody hurries to recharge the camera's batteries for the next landing. This will happen at 16.30 in Cooper Bay (I put it on the map). We came all the way here because this place hosts a rare colony of macaroni penguins, but you have to work for it. The landing is on a beach covered in fur seals, then you have to go up a rather steep hill, walking in snow. At the top, you have to go again pass two very unhappy fur seals (I can relate, they climbed all the way up there to be alone and they now have to deal with 50 humans in their quite spot).

We are still on land in Gold Harbour, and after elephant seals, let's get to the penguins. Here there are mostly king penguins (and a few gentoos). It's an important colony, not the most important of the island (stay tuned) by for a first it's already rather impressive.

Georgie du Sud Jour 4, Gold Harbour (1)

"Hello just a quick announcement to let you know that the sunrise landing this morning is cancelled, there is rain and wind, so you can go back to sleep" (Traduction : bonjour, une petite annonce pour vous dire que le débarquement de ce matin est annulé, il y a du vent et de la pluie, pas de soleil levant, vous pouvez retourner dormir).

"Hello just a quick announcement to let you know that the landing this morning is cancelled, there is rain and wind, so you can go back to sleep". So, Martin, you are actually waking us up to tell us we can go back to sleep now? At the time, I don't need to be convinced to continue sleeping (the real disappointment will come later). Second wake-up call at 7.30, this time it's for good. Breakfast at 8.00 and we get ready for a morning landing at Gold Harbour (see the map, we sure have covered some grounds since last night). We have a much better visibility, so here is a better example of a South Georgia's typical scenery. Rather mind-blowing, and everything seems oversized.

I wake up early to not miss the arrival in South Georgia. I have sharp memories of jagged peaks covered in snow, spectacular glaciers falling into the sea, so at 6 am I'm outside and... Disappointment. The weather is completely foggy, we can guess Willis Islands in the haze, other than that for now I will have to make do with the memories... As a consolation prize we see two humback whales, very close to the ship (I couldn't take pictures).

The night was better than the last, and no one is complaining. During the night we crossed the Antarctic convergence, which you can tell easily from the outside temperature, around 3°C (plus windchill). And we see our first tabular iceberg, so which more proof do you need? Good excuse to spend some time outside and photograph something else than the birds. We put our clock forward another hour, I'm not sure what our time lag is now compared to the "official" time.

The night has not been quiet, and everything on the ship is prepared for difficult conditions, but it will get better during the day. Doctor Peter will knock on each cabin door every morning to make sure everybody is allright. Breakfast at 8am. The front deck will now be closed during sailing, which is a pity as the outside spaces are somewhat limited (and the best one, the rear of deck 3, is very busy with the zodiacs and containers with some mysterious gear).

Falklands, jour 9, jour 10...

4 novembre, jour 9

I wake up at 8am (ship's time), breakfast and at 10.30 we have an official briefing for an update.  The others are on the plane from Santiago to Punta Arenas, which is a very good start, but the next plane is delayed at least by 3 hours because of the weather. There is indeed a strong Northerly wind today, the sea is angry, and not leaving yesterday was maybe a good option. If we had left, today would be a really unpleasant day. Actually, Hurtigruten's Midnatsol had to turn around after leaving Ushuaia on the way to Antarctica, they didn't want to try out the Drake. Small consolation. And it's raining.

Falklands Jour 8 - l'attente

Once again I didn't hear the alarm clock on the phone this morning. I think it's actually not ringing anymore, I'll have to work this out when we get back. The bad news is that I missed the sunrise outing in Gypsy Cove... So I meet my colleagues again at breakfast. The bad news is that the international airport is closed today, so the schedule flight cannot land and is postponed to tomorrow... What? The rumor is that the army (which runs the airport) has exercises planned for today,  which is a bit hard to believe. If they deliberately chose to do military exercises on the one day per week there is a commercial flight, it's rather twisted.

Anyway, this means that we are not going at sea until tomorrow at best, but we will still board the ship which is ready for us, and Ole (the only WildPhoto member present) will try and organise excursions and animations for the few passengers that are already here. In addition to our small group, a few others had opted to visit Falklands on their own prior to the cruise, so there are about 15 passengers now (on 48 expected in total). Meanwhile, I talk a short walk in town, some shopping, a visit to the (wonderful) history museum. The monument in front of the church, a famous local landmark, is made with whale bones (and is called, of course, the Whalebone Arch).

[Note : I publish this article a long time after the trip, during the period of containment and its score of uncertainties and worries. This trip seems now so far away, this report somewhat futile, but it brings me some freedom and anchor, hopefully it will bring you some nice feelings as well]

Unfortunately, this is our last morning on Sea Lion Island, so I will try to take advantage of it as much as possible. Well before sunrise I return to the same location as yesterday. The light is different, less clouds so the light is less "subtle", but it's still very beautiful.

jeudi 1 novembre 2018

While waiting for the sunset, we head back inland to enjoy the warm lights on different subjects. I have learnt by now that to best photograph wildlife, it's good to be at eye level, so when the animal is small you need to lay down completely. Our efforts tonight are well rewarded thanks to the cooperation from these two-banded plovers. There are many of them, and as soon as we stop and wait they come foraging all around us.

Last photos of the morning, and there are not only gentoo penguins here. Caracaras are always on the lookout for ill or weak animals, here they have found what I think is an upland goose (male), at least as big as they are. So they are feasting in groups, and fights ensue.

This morning, my alarm did ring (at 4.30) and I heard it! Yay! And so glad I did, because the light this morning is spectacular. I go towards the big pond between the penguin colony and the sea, in the hope to see penguins on the move, and I am not disappointed (to be honest, the risk was low). There is some mist on the water and a very special atmosphere. I am almost alone (just a glimpse of another colleague every now and then) with some hundreds (thousands?) of penguins and dozens (hundreds?) of elephant seals. It's a weird feeling, but quite pleasing.

Falklands jour 5, Sea Lion Island

I slept through my alarm this morning, it's about 6.30 when I open my eyes. I get a bit of comfort because it's cloudy so no real sunset. Anyway, it's done. I meet with the others for breakfast. This morning's option (if we want to join, which will all do) is to take a short hike to a pond in the middle of the island, where we may see interesting animals. It's really nice to hike, the weather is getting better and we meet a lot of birds on the way. They are cautious, but we can see some of them from quite close if we stay still and silent. Here is a Magellan snipe.

So here I am, on the way to our next destination, which is Sea Lion Island, at the opposite end of the Falkland Islands, on the southernmost part (see the map).  I try to overcome the apprehension of the flight, and I have to say it's a really nice trip. The plane is flying low and I can enjoy the scenery, which is surprisingly diverse.

Falklands jour 4, dernier matin à Saunders Island

It's already our last morning here, that was way too short, and this morning we all rise up early to enjoy the last hours (4am is early enough). We scatter around the Neck. I will go up on the cliff all the way to the mixed albatros/rockhopper/cormoran colony, the furthest from our cabin. On the way I walk along the less mixed black browed albatros colony, and these are really beautiful birds.

Falklands jour 3, sunset on the Neck

[Note : I pick up this trip report again, a year after the trip. I may have forgotten some details, but the emotions are still there!].

After the meal, whichever it was, and a little rest, I go out again to enjoy the few hours until sunset. I start by going back to the rockhopper colony on the cliff. Near the colony there is a small creek which the penguins use to drink and shower. They don't seem bothered by my presence, but I stay on the edge of the colony and try to be low and quiet. They have a lot of interactions, caring ones between partners, more aggressive sometimes with others (it's a lot of noise mostly). I like their slanted eyebrows which make them seem angry all the time.

Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (2)

Let's come back to the King penguins. There is a small breeding colony here (not that common in the Falklands) with a few dozen individuals. Some are walking along the beach in a detached way (but still with pride). They have really impressive feet, look at these hiking boots, it's strong stuff!

Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (1)

The alarm rings dutifully before 4am, but the wind and rain, which started last evening, do not seem to calm down. So we stay wisely in bed. Then breakfast, quick look at yesterday's photo, including post-processing course by Ole, and the rain finally stops late morning. So everybody goes out. There is still a lot of wind, but we'll make do. It's actually nice to have the wind, as it creates beautiful waves and surf and sea spray. I sit on the beach for a while, I'm not sure I'm photographing penguins (gentoo) on a wave background, or the sea with a penguin foreground. Anyhow, it's pretty wonderful. I take way too many pictures and here is a small sample of penguins coming in and out of the waves, tasting the water, and other beach activities.

We have a rest while the MS Expedition (in mooring here) gets her passengers back. David has welcomed them on the beach with all the proper instructions, and wait until they are all back onboard to head home. And so we are left all alone with nature and wildlife. Note that the cabin is basic in architecture, but its firm tether in the ground is a testimony to the possible harsh weather conditions.

Falklands jour 2, Saunders Island, premier matin

After a good first night, things are starting to get serious. We are here to take photos, and good photos require good light, so we are counting very much on sunrises and sunsets. Weather forecast is encouraging, so we all set up our clocks early this morning. Sunrise is at 5.20am and it's good to be out at least one hour before that, so it's really early. But we did not wake up for nothing!

Falkland Islands are made of two main islands (West Falkland and  East Falkland) and scores of smaller islands all around. We have two of them on our schedule for this week, and the first one is Saunders Island, on the Northwestern part of the archipelago (I'm putting together a map). The only transportation possible is by plane, from the FIGAS company (Falkland Islands Government Air Service). They run five 8-seaters "Islander" planes, and their pilots can fly in almost any type of weather. You use thess planes as you would a taxi, but with a lot more advanced planning. I'm not a big fan of planes, and these felt initially a bit too small for comfort. First step, each of us is weighted, with all their luggage, as every kilo matters (and how these kilos are placed in the plane, also). We are then scientifically divided in two groups, each one in a plane, and off we go.

I had a trip planned in the far South in December 2016, but fate had other plans, and this trip couldn't happen. With the advance payment that I got back, I tried in April 2017 a solo trip and a new company, WildPhoto Travel (which organizes trips for photographers in small groups). It was a more than positive experience, and I learnt that they were organizing a trip focused on South Georgia : 2 weeks on board Polar Pioneer, including journey from and to the Falklands, with about 50 passengers. This seemed like the perfect occasion to go back, in a different way. And while I'm travelling so far away, I also chose the pre-cruise week in Falklands, with the same company, but even smaller group (5 + a photo guide, and land-based). When I say "so far away", it's here, between South America and Antarctic Peninsula, Roaring Forties and Howling Fifties...

The ship arrived in Trondheim a bit late, but I still have time for an express breakfast before I disembark with all my luggage. Goodbye MS Lofoten old friend, and I think we'll see each other again. When I get off the ship at 7.30 there is an amazing sky with red an purple strips, but as I'm walking with all my bags among buildings I can't manage to take a picture, and it's over by the time I arrive at the train station. When the train leaves, the sky is mostly grey, but after a while the horizon begins to clear up.

While yesterday was for me the most beautiful day of the trip, today is not too bad either. We cross the Polar Circle this morning, and sail along the beautiful Helgeland coast. It's the day for Scandinavian folk tales, see previous trips for the whole stories, today I will only show you the heroes. The first one is Hestmannen, the Horseman, now watching over the polar circle for centuries to come. Beautiful weather this morning, but there is a strong wind.

We leave Risøyhamn, towards Sortland. We are sailing in beautiful scenery, with a changing sky just as I like, and even sometimes some sun on the mountains. Really enjoyable. British old ladies (or from other nationalities) are not only knitting, they are also chatting while enjoying the view. There is even a very active group of ladies ornithologists.

Once again I get up as we leave Harstad, and as it looks grey outside, I go straight to breakfast. But suddenly, there are lights behind the mountains! So I drink my coffee in a hurry, and out on the deck. It's my favorite day today, with my favorite landscapes, and the Raftsundet as the icing on the cake (even if we will arrive there in the near darkness).

I'm boarding MS Lofoten again on her Southbound trip, but she will arrive only around midnight tonight, so I still have a full day in Tromsø. A good part of it is spent resting, because all these shortened nights are starting to weigh seriously on me (but no regrets whatsoever). But as the weather is still very nice, it would be a shame not to enjoy it, so I take the Fjellheisen cable car to enjoy the sunset from the top. Sunset is around 3.30 pm here, I go on the 2pm cable car up.

As I said, I didn't enquire much about the tourist/culture offer in Tromsø during my stay, and I should have. The aurora guide yesterday told us that it was the end of the "Sami week" (Samisk Uke in Norwegian), which is quite a big event here. It lasts for the whole week including February 6th, which is the Sami National Day. There are exhibitions, cultural events, a craft market and so on. Unfortunately I missed an exhibition on "Samis in polar expeditions" which would have been of interest. But the highlight of the day, is today, the last Sunday at 12.55, in the main shopping street : a reindeer race. On a 201m-long snow tracks, trained reindeers run while pulling a driver (also trained) on skis, and the goal is to go the fastest. The race record is 14 seconds something. And as there is no snow in the streets currently, fresh snow has been brought during the night to build the track.

I didn't have anything planned for the daytime in Tromsø, and it was a smart idea. I'm still dizzy from the ship and tired from the short night, so it's a very slow day. The grey sky is not helping. I do a walk in town to get some fresh air (quite fresh) and do some shopping (including stuff to eat). I'm back at 6pm at the meeting point at the tourist office. We have a new guide tonight, coming from South Africa (quite far away from home), and very enthusiastic about mostly everything. I had a look at the clouds forecast and was a bit worried, because it looks cloudy about everywhere, but when you work with professionals you are rewarded with a nice spot with a view and clear skies. Well done! We had to go to Hillesøya (Hill island), at the tip of Sommarøya (Summer island) after crossing a good bit of Kvaløya (Whale island). It seems the options for tonight are limited, because we are sharing the parking spot with several other groups, but soon everyone scatters into the night and we find ourselves rather isolated on the hill, overlooking the sea.

The sky is magnificent, and once again we don't have to wait very long for a wonderful Aurora show, long-lasting, with plenty of movement, and in several directions at once, so I don't always know where to look to not miss a bit. Here are some pictures, taken over a 1,5 hour time frame.

Waouh!

For the next 3 nights, I have booked an Aurora chase tour with the company Wandering Owl (which I picked a bit at random among the hundred or so companies in Tromsø, I mostly wanted a small group). As you never know what the cloud cover will be, and which distance you will have to drive to find a clear sky, I'm more comfortable delegating the driving to someone else. Tonight, after a close study of the cloud maps, completed by their own experience, the guides take us North along the coast, on the island of Ringvassøya, about 65km from the city.

The suspens is short-lived, because as soon as we get out of the minibus, the sky is indeed clear, well done, and activity has already started. So while other people are getting equiped for the cold (I came with my own equipement), I unfold the tripod on the side of the road and start watching and taking pictures. Wow!

Good surprise this morning, as I wake up when we leave Harstad : there is light and colors outside. I dress up in a hurry and go out. Incredible. Here are the lights I was waiting for since the beginning of the trip. Long lasting winter sunrise, with red-yellow golden light on one side, and pale blue-pinl silver on the other. It beautiful, and it goes on, and on...

I'm getting old, I didn't even woke up for the crossing of the polar circle (7h 17min 40s), but a little bit later I'm out on deck to greet MS Polarlys. The weather doesn't seem very gracious, and the morning sees a mix of snow showers and grey skies. I stay out anyway to enjoy the landscape until we arrive in Ørnes, it's a very nice stretch.

I had a better night. I wake up in Trondheim, as we are docked next to MS Nordkapp. It's snowing heavily and I'm not really in the mood for a long walk. I still go out for a bit, and watch MS Nordkapp leaves for the South. Trondheim is a big supply spot (for the ship itself, not for the cargo she transports) and there is a nice uninterrupted dance of Fenwicks and crane.

Torvik-Ålesund-Molde

I didn't have a very good night, but it's not the fault of the cabin (very quiet), nor the bed (very comfy) nor the weather. The Vestkapp craddled us gently. The Stad sea this morning is more energetic, but nothing serious, and the ship rolls quietly. Some morning lights, then the clouds come. The thermometer on Deck 5 says 2°C, it's probably a little optimistic but the aire is not that cold and there is little wind. When we arrive near Torvik mid-morning, there already are two huge supply-ships moored to the quay. As the quay is not very big, it takes a lot of clever manoeuver to parallel-park without hitting anything (we didn't hit anything).

Norwegian weather service has forecasted this morning sun with some clouds.  Actually, it's all clouds and no sun. As I can only board the ship from 4pm, I enjoy the hotel room as late as I can, and then I go for a walk. I particularly enjoy the picturesque neighbourhood between the Hurtigruten terminal and the main harbor, with small winding pedestrian streets and nice wooden colored houses. Some are very well kept, and others show the signs of the passing time, but the whole area is very nice.

Oslo-Bergen, train, soleil

Today I'm going to Bergen, by train. We have done this particulair train ride several times and I still think it's worth it. The main concern is the weather, and I'm very lucky today. Nice morning lights as we leave Oslo's outskirts. The train is nearly empty at first, and I can easily move from one side to the other.

samedi 3 février 2018

Oslo

For this trip I have tried to make a relaxed schedule, and I'm staying in Oslo today. I was picturing sort of a cocooning/resting day, but the weather is glorious this morning and it would be a shame not to enjoy it. Still -7°C, a bit brisk but fine (wool underwear indeed are a good idea though). Some sidewalks are heated and so fine to walk on, everywhere else is pure ice (with some pebbles thrown on it sometimes), such as the pathways of Frogner Park.

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da...

Life goes on, bra...

More than a year has passed since the last sad message I posted on this blog... It's time to rekindle the flame. There have been travels and explorations since then, inward introspections but also real adventurous trips. Other destinations, other experiencces, to see if I can keep going alone. First a trip to Svalbard at the end of winter, on a small ship (so you have to talk to people, he wasn't so good at that). And another trip to the South, the warm South this time, in Australia.

I came back rich of new friendships and many pictures, happy and somewhat relieved. A bit sad also, because he would have actually enjoyed these trips. They are not on the blog, or rather not yet, because I do want to share them, but real life came in the way, with its good and bad days. It will happen for sure. Just a little teaser in the meantime!
