Well, the polar night is not quite what I expected. Granted, even though we are North of the Polar Circle (crossed at 7.11 this morning), we still are South enough that there are sunrise (11.31) and sunset (12.34). However, we did not see the sun. But from 8.30am there are lights behind the mountains. Three hours of dawn, turning slowly to three hours of twilight, that's plenty of incredible lights. Very soft, very pure. Not 24 hours darkness then. That's reassuring. We'll see how it is further North.

There have been three stops in the night, I woke up for two of then (1 am and 5 am) but that is one of the charms of the Hurtigruten route (not kidding, I like it). The big stop of the day is Bodø, known for its major airport (between sea and mountains, the landing stripe is quite surprising). We leave around 3pm, as sunset is getting to an end. We will barely see the silhouette of the Landego island and its lighthouse, opening to the Vestfjord which leads to Lofoten. We get to Lofoten in the night, which is frustrating when you know the impressive landscape.

And as we leave Svolvaer around 10pm, what are those lights in the sky? We didn't dare hoping, but yes, it's a faint but very real Northern Lights. We didn't even have to wait, first night in the right area and there we go... In reality it's a lot fainter (and less green) than on the picture, but I'm happy with it. It's surprising and beautiful. We finish the day on the outside deck, at the frond, sailing through the buoys of Raftsundet. We feel so privileged to be here.
