Falklands jour 4, dernier matin à Saunders Island

C'est déjà notre dernier matin ici, ça passe trop vite, et cette fois on se lève tous tôt pour en profiter (si quand même, 4h, ça fait tôt). On s'éparpille autour du Neck, je vais aller sur la falaise à la colonie mixte albatros/gorfous/cormorans, la plus éloignée de notre logement. En chemin je passe par des colonies moins mixtes, en particulier la colonie d'albatros à sourcils noirs, qui sont vraiment des oiseaux magnifiques.

It's already our last morning here, that was way too short, and this morning we all rise up early to enjoy the last hours (4am is early enough). We scatter around the Neck. I will go up on the cliff all the way to the mixed albatros/rockhopper/cormoran colony, the furthest from our cabin. On the way I walk along the less mixed black browed albatros colony, and these are really beautiful birds.

[Note : je reprends ce récit de voyage près d'un an après pour cause d'interruptions diverses et variées. J'ai pu oublier quelques détails en route, mais les émotions sont toujours là!]

Après le repas et un peu de repos digestif, je ressors pour profiter des quelques heures jusqu'au coucher du soleil. Pour commencer je retourne vers la colonie de gorfous sauteurs sur la falaise. Juste à côté de la colonie il y a un petit ruisseau où ils aiment bien venir boire et faire des ablutions. Ils ne semblent pas dérangés par ma présence, mais bien sûr je reste à distance et ne rentrent pas dans la colonies. Il y a beaucoup d'interactions entre eux, tendres entre les couples, plus aggressifs d'un couple à l'autre (c'est surtout sonore). J'aime bien leur air perpétuellement en colère avec leurs sourcils froncés.

After the meal, whichever it was, and a little rest, I go out again to enjoy the few hours until sunset. I start by going back to the rockhopper colony on the cliff. Near the colony there is a small creek which the penguins use to drink and shower. They don't seem bothered by my presence, but I stay on the edge of the colony and try to be low and quiet. They have a lot of interactions, caring ones between partners, more aggressive sometimes with others (it's a lot of noise mostly). I like their slanted eyebrows which make them seem angry all the time.

Revenons donc à nos manchots royaux. Il y en a une petite colonie ici (colonie de reproduction, ce qui n'est pas courant aux Falklands), avec peut-être quelques dizaines d'individus. Certains se baladent sur la plage d'un air nonchalant mais tout de même assez fiers. Ils ont des pattes impressionnantes, regardez ces chaussures de marche, c'est du costaud!


Let's come back to the King penguins. There is a small breeding colony here (not that common in the Falklands) with a few dozen individuals. Some are walking along the beach in a detached way (but still with pride). They have really impressive feet, look at these hiking boots, it's strong stuff!

Le réveil sonne consciencieusement avant 4h du matin, mais le vent et la pluie, qui ont commencé hier soir, ne semblent pas presser de s'en aller. On reste donc sagement au lit. Petit-déjeuner, debrief des photos d'hier, petit cours express de retouche photo par Ole, et la pluie finit par s'arrêter en fin de matinée. Donc hop, tout le monde dehors. Il y a encore beaucoup de vent, mais on va s'y faire, on va s'y faire d'autant plus que ça lève une très jolie houle sur la mer avec de beaux rouleaux et des embruns. Je reste assez longtemps assise sur la plage, je ne sais plus si je photographie les manchots (papous) sur fond de vagues, ou la mer avec premier plan de manchot, en tout cas c'est très très beau. J'ai fait bien trop de photos et je vous en livre un petit florilège, avec manchots entrant ou sortant de l'eau, la goutant et autres activités de plage.

The alarm rings dutifully before 4am, but the wind and rain, which started last evening, do not seem to calm down. So we stay wisely in bed. Then breakfast, quick look at yesterday's photo, including post-processing course by Ole, and the rain finally stops late morning. So everybody goes out. There is still a lot of wind, but we'll make do. It's actually nice to have the wind, as it creates beautiful waves and surf and sea spray. I sit on the beach for a while, I'm not sure I'm photographing penguins (gentoo) on a wave background, or the sea with a penguin foreground. Anyhow, it's pretty wonderful. I take way too many pictures and here is a small sample of penguins coming in and out of the waves, tasting the water, and other beach activities.

Falklands jour 2, Saunders Island, Sorties de bain

On a fait la sieste en attendant que le MS Expedition (ici au mouillage) rembarque ses passagers. David les a accueilli sur la plage et leur a donné les consignes, puis a attendu qu'ils soient tous repartis. Il reprend ensuite la route avec sa jeune employée irlandaise, qui a bien profité de sa journée elle aussi. Et nous voilà donc livrés à nous-même avec juste la nature et les animaux. Notez que la cabane est d'architecture rustique, mais son ancrage au sol (du genre "trop fort n'a jamais manqué") témoigne bien des conditions météo parfois rudes.

We have a rest while the MS Expedition (in mooring here) gets her passengers back. David has welcomed them on the beach with all the proper instructions, and wait until they are all back onboard to head home. And so we are left all alone with nature and wildlife. Note that the cabin is basic in architecture, but its firm tether in the ground is a testimony to the possible harsh weather conditions.

Falklands jour 2, Saunders Island, premier matin

Après une première nuit réparatrice, les choses sérieuses commencent. On est là pour faire des photos, pour faire des photos il faut une jolie lumière, et donc on compte sérieusement sur les levers et couchers de soleil. Les prévisions météos étant encourageantes, on a mis le réveil tôt ce matin. Le lever du soleil est prévu à 5h20, il faut être opérationnel une bonne heure avant, donc ça fait vraiment tôt. Mais on ne s'est pas levé pour rien!

After a good first night, things are starting to get serious. We are here to take photos, and good photos require good light, so we are counting very much on sunrises and sunsets. Weather forecast is encouraging, so we all set up our clocks early this morning. Sunrise is at 5.20am and it's good to be out at least one hour before that, so it's really early. But we did not wake up for nothing!
