Jour 17 - En mer

On pensait avoir deux jours en mer tranquilles pour souffler un peu, tu parles ! Un peu après 7h30 on est réveillé par un appel excité au haut-parleur, nous disant qu’il faut sortir tout de suite parce qu’il y a plein de baleines à bosse tout près du bateau. On jette un coup d’œil par le hublot : elles sont juste dessous ! Se faire réveiller par des baleines sous les fenêtres, c’est quelque chose…

We thought we would have two quiet sea days to get a bit of rest, we were wrong. A bit after 7.30 we are woken up by a very excited loudspeaker call saying that we must go outside at once, because there are plenty of humpback whales around the ship! We peek through the porthole: there are right there outside our cabin! To be woken up by whales under your window, that is a new (awesome) experience.

Jour 16 - Deception Island / Telefon Bay

A 15h on arrive à Telefon Bay (carte), qui tire son nom non pas de la qualité de la réception satellite, mais du bateau SS Telefon qui est resté là quelques temps pour réparation au début du XXème siècle. C'est un endroit qu'on ne connaissait pas, un paysage très lunaire, des montagnes de lave (certaines assez récentes), des cratères dans des cratères,avec des petits lacs au fond. On débarque à 16h15, il y a 4 phoques à nous faire le comité d'accueil. On peut monter et se promener autour des cratères sur les petites collines (on choisit la moins haute!).

At 15.00 we arrive in Telefon Bay, so called after the ship SS Telefon which stayed here for repairs after she struck a reef in Admiralty Bay in 1908. It is a new place for us, a moon-like landscape, mountains of dark lava rocks (some quite recent), craters within craters with small lakes at the bottom. We go ashore at 16.15, there are 4 seals as a welcoming comitee (actually, they don't care about us that much). It's possible to climb up the craters and walk around the hills (we choose the lowest one!).

Jour 16 - Deception Island / Whalers Bay

Bon mais en fait le voyage n'est pas tout à fait fini!  Réveil à 6h45 à l'approche de Deception Island (carte), dans l'archipel des Shetland du Sud.  C'était aussi une de nos dernières escales lors du voyage précédent, avec beaucoup moins de neige. Deception Island c'est un peu Hawaii en plus froid (2°C ce matin), en fait, c'est une caldera de volcan (encore actif, ce qui excite prodigieusement le géologue de l'équipe d'expédition), ouverte sur l'extérieur juste par un tout petit passage, appelé "Soufflets de Neptune", et qui forme du coup un magnifique abri naturel. Les baleiniers en ont bien profité.

But the journey is not over yet! I wake up at 6.45 as we are nearing Deception Island (map), in the South Shetland Island. It was also one of our last landing during our  previous trip, with less snow. Deception Island is a bit like a cold Hawaii (2°C this morning), it is actually the caldera of a volcano (an active volcano, which gets our expedition team geologist very excited). It's open only by a narrow passage, called "Neptune's Bellows" and forms a very good natural shelter, which the whalers have taken advantage of.

Jour 15 - Good bye Antarctica

Le soir il y a une séance de questions/réponses sur le voyage avec l'équipe d'expédition, mais tout le monde a l'air un peu "assommé" de toutes ces émotions. Le soleil se couche, les lumières deviennent chaudes, effet d'ombre et lumières sur les montagnes, ça se colore peu à peu, rose, jaune, bleu... La lune se lève, presque pleine, c'est très beau (vraiment, je suis en panne de vocabulaire). On essaye de veiller un peu, entre les ponts extérieurs et dans les fauteuils sur l'avant parce qu'en fait c'est notre dernier soir sur la Péninsule et dans les glaces, et qu'on veut vraiment en profiter jusqu'au bout.

Tonight there is a "questions/answers about the trip" session with the expedition team, but everybody seems a bit stunned by everything we have seen and lived today (and the days before). The sun is slowly setting, the lights are getting warmer, shadows on the mountains, delicate pink, yellow, blue colors... And the moon rises, almost full, it's so beautiful (I'm missing words). We alternate between the outside decks and the observation lounge, it's our last day in the Peninsula and in the ice and we want to experience it for as long as possible.

Jour 15 - Chenal Lemaire (bis)

Après toutes ces émotions, eh ben c'est pas fini. On repart vers 14h45 vers le nord, et comme il fait toujours aussi beau, on retraverse la banquise, et surtout on refait le chenal Lemaire dans l'autre sens, sous le soleil! Deux fois dans la même journée, c'est carrément du luxe. Et on ne peut pas dire que ça soit plus moche sous le soleil!

We've had a lot of emotions today, but it's not over, by far. We leave around 14.45, northbound, and since the weather is so beautiful, the captain takes us through the sea-ice again (how fun) and enters the Lemaire Channel, again! Twice in a day, under so drastically different weather conditions, this is more than luxury. It was beautiful this morning, it's not so bad either under the sun!

Jour 15 : Station Vernadsky

Il était prévu de débarquer à la station ukrainienne Vernadsky, qui est toute proche mais entre elle et nous il y a l'étendue de glace sur laquelle Podorange est amarrée. Pour ne pas lui causer de souci, il faudra faire un grand tour autour des ilots et comme il y a de la glace partout, ça n'est pas gagné. Les Polarcirkel boats doivent repousser des plaques de glace, et c'est assez sportif donc les conducteurs ont bien du mérite (et c'est aussi un grand plus du Fram, d'avoir ces petits bateaux rigides et costauds capable de se frayer un chemin dans la glace). Le débarquement prend plus de temps que prévu à cause des conditions de navigation mais finalement c'est notre tour vers 12h30. On a droit à une chouette balade pour y aller, du coup, entre glace et ilots!

A landing at the ukranian research station Vernadsky was planned. It's quite close to where we are moored, but in between them and us is the large ice sheet to which Podorange is anchored. To protect their anchorage, Polarcirkel boats will have to take a long route around the islands and in between the ice, and at first it's not sure that it will be possible. The PCB have to push their way through the ice and it's quite a technical feat, hats off to the drivers (it's a big plus for the Fram to have these sturdy boats able to break through thin ice). The landing take more time than anticipated, but finally it can be done and it's our turn around 12.30. Bonus point : a nice PCB cruise between islands and ice!

Jour 15 : Argentine Islands

Et tout à coup devant nous, la banquise, dense, immaculée. Est-ce que cela va arrêter le bateau? Eh ben pas du tout. Le capitaine se prend pour un commandant de brise-glace (et a l'air de se faire extrêmement plaisir, si on en croit les commentaires d'Anja dans les hauts-parleurs) et engage l'étrave dans la glace. En fait c'est de la banquise très récente (on apprendra plus tard qu'il y a 2/3 semaines, il a fait -22°C ici...) et donc pas très épaisse et le bateau n'a pas trop de difficulté à y tailler sa route. Mais c'est spectaculaire, pendant de longues minutes, de voir la glace se briser devant nous, sur les côtés... On croise plein de traces de manchots.

And suddenly, in front of us, sea ice, packed, immaculate. Will this stop the ship? Not at all. The captain pretends his ship is an icebreaker (and seems to be incredibly delighted about it, according to Anja's comments in the loudspeakers) and steer the bow of the ship directly towards the ice. It is actually quite a recent sea-ice (we will later learn that 2/3 weeks ago, temperatures here were around -20°C...) and it is not very thick, the ice-strengthened hull of the Fram can break it without difficulty. It's absolutely spectacular to see the ice breaking in front of us and along the side of the ship... We see plenty of penguin tracks.

Jour 15 - Chenal Lemaire (round 1)

Depuis le début de ce voyage, chaque jour nous parait encore plus extraordinaire que le précédent, et on se demande si ça va s'arrêter à un moment. Aujourd'hui peut-être? Eh ben non. Tuons le suspens tout de suite : ça a été notre plus belle et plus forte journée (et la barre était haute). Du coup j'ai fait plein (trop) de photos, et j'essaye de trier comme je peux mais j'ai du mal à prendre du recul pour réduire beaucoup le nombre de photos. Donc il va y avoir plusieurs messages pour raconter cette journée, avec plein d'icebergs et de montagnes et de glace et de neige (sous diverses lumières), et quelques rencontres! J'espère que ça n'est pas trop lassant.

Since the beginning of the journey, each day felt more extraordinary than the previous one, and we wonder when it's going to stop. Today maybe? Actually, not today. Let's face it : it was our most beautiful and strongest day. Which means I have taken a lot of (too many) pictures. I'm trying to sort them out but it is difficult to distantiate myself from the incredible experience and choose only a small number of pictures to show. So there will be many messages to tell the story of this day, with plenty of ice and mountains and snow (under many different lights), and some surprise meetings! I hope it's not too boring. 

Jour 14 - Paradise Bay

Notre prochaine étape prévue est Paradise Bay. Il y a encore beaucoup de glaces, donc on progresse lentement au milieu des icebergs. Un polarcirkelboat a été mis à l'eau pour que les vidéastes puissent faire des prises de vues du bateau dans les glaces. On croise aussi le National Geographic Explorer (une silhouette familière, puisque c'est l'ancien MS Lyngen d'Hurtigruten, un sister-ship du MS Vesteraalen sur lequel nous avons navigué en Norvège l'an dernier).

Our next planned landing is in Paradise Bay. There is still a lot of ice, so the progression is very slow around the icebergs. A polarcirkelboat has been launched, for the filmmakers to get footage of the ship in the ice. We also cross path with the National Geographic Explorer (a familiar silhouette, since in a former life she was the MS Lyngen from Hurtigruten, a sister-ship to the MS Vesteraalen on which we sailed in Norway last year).

Jour 14 - Neko Harbor

Réveil à Neko Harbor à 6h45, il fait +2°C, tout calme, avec des nuages et du soleil. C'est un très bel endroit, entouré de glaciers, les montagnes se reflètent dans l'eau, il y a beaucoup de glace sur l'eau, c'est magnifique. On entend les glaciers qui craquent et grondent, et de temps en temps un grand morceau de glace se détache et tombe, levant comme un brouillard de neige au dessus de l'eau.

We wake up in Neko Harbor around 6.45, the weather is very nice, no wind, 2°C, with sunshine and some clouds. It is a beautiful place, surrounded by glaciers, the mountains reflect in the water, there is a lot of floating ice, it is stunning. We can hear the glacier cracking and sometimes a big chunk of ice comes down from the mountain, creating a "cloud" of snow and ice.

Jour 13 - en route vers Neko Harbour

On reste encore un peu sur le pont jusqu'à 19h30 pour profiter de la vue, et on y retourne après diner, jusqu'au briefing pour demain, où on nous interdit d'aller nous coucher parce que c'est trop beau dehors (c'est vrai). Le soleil se couche vers 23h, donc il y a de la lumière pendant très longtemps, et quelle lumière! On passe donc toute la soirée sur le pont. Le soleil joue avec les nuages, les montagnes et les glaces. Les lumières sont différentes selon le côté où on regarde, mais c'est magnifique partout...

We stay outside as long as we can, with a small interruption for dinner, and also for the briefing for tomorrow. We are told not to go to bed, because it's so beautiful outside (and it is!). The sun sets around 23.00, so there is light (and what a light!) for a long time in the evening. The sun plays with the clouds, the mountains and the ice. The colors and lights are different on every side of the ship, but it's beautiful everywhere.

Jour 13 - Port Lockroy

Après le déjeuner express, on retourne sur le pont pour la navigation dans le chenal Neumayer. Il y a une alternance neige et soleil (avec de plus en plus de soleil), et c'est vraiment beau. On cherche les formes dans les glaciers, vous voyez le lion?

After an express lunch, we are back on the deck for the sailing through the Neumayer Channel. Snow and sun alternate (with more sun as we go on) and it's beautiful. We look for shapes in the glacier, can you see the lion?

Jour 13 - Cuverville Island

Comme on a un peu trainé sur notre balade en kayak (pour notre plus grand plaisir), on n'a que très peu de temps à la fin pour se balader un peu sur la plage de Cuverville Island pour voir la colonie de manchots papous, mais tant pis. Là encore il y a vraiment beaucoup plus de neige que lors de notre voyage précédent, ça change radicalement le paysage (je ne reconnais rien, en fait). Mais avec la glace très dense, les couleurs, et la présence des petits manchots, même si on ne profite pas très longtemps, on profite à fond.

Since we have spend more time kayaking than expected (we are not complaining), we have very little time back at the beach to enjoy the gentoo penguins rookery. There is again a lot more snow than during our first trip,and the landscape is completely different (to be honest, I don't recognize anything). But with the dense pack ice, its incredible colors, the funny little penguins, even if we don't have much time, we make the most of it.

Jour 13 - Cuverville Island et Kayak

C'est vendredi 13, faut-il être heureux ou inquiet? En fait, ce vendredi 13 nous a porté chance, comme vous allez voir. Je me lève tôt encore pour aller voir comment ça se passe dehors car on entre dans le vif du sujet, on est bien dans la Péninsule. On nous a promis des glaces, on y est.

Today is Friday the 13th. Good or bad omen? Well, as you will see it was actually a lucky day for us.I wake up early again to see what it's like outside. We are now officially in the Peninsula, we were promised ice galore, and there it is!

Jour 12 - Half Moon Bay

A 15h30, briefing pour demain. On va écrire nos cartes postales pour pouvoir les poster à Port Lockroy (si on y arrive, parce que les glaces ne sont pas favorables et ça fait au moins deux semaines qu'aucun bateau n'a pu passer). Vers 17h30, il parait qu'on arrive à Half Moon Island (voir carte) mais il neige et il n'y a aucune visibilité. Et il y a du vent donc le kayak prévu (pour nous) est annulé. Demain?

Around 15.30 there is a briefing for tomorrow's landing, as every day. Ice permitting, as every day, we will land in the afternoon at Port Lockroy, which means now is the time to write the last postcards. Around 17.30 we are told that we arrive near Half Moon Island (see map) but it is snowing heavily and we barely see anything. And it's windy, so our kayak trip is cancelled. Maybe tomorrow?

Jour 12 - Arctowski Station

Lever 6h30, sur le pont. +1°C, vent WNW force 5. On entre dans Admiralty Bay (King George Island, Shetlands du Sud), c'est un peu bouché et on devine la côte dans le brouillard qui s'ouvre par endroit. On devine aussi un bateau à coque rouge, on apprendra plus tard que c'est un bateau ravitailleur d'une des nombreuses bases scientifiques qu'on trouve sur cette île. A 7h30 on arrive devant Arctowski Station (station de recherche polonaise), mais le commandant de la base à demandé que les débarquement ne commencent pas avant 8h (c'est dimanche, et dimanche le scientifique polonais fait la grasse matinée. Jusqu'à 7h30 donc). Voir sur la carte, j'ai mis le pointeur pile sur les batiments (en zoomant à fond en mode satellite).

I wake up at 6.30 to go outside. It's a bit chilly (+1°C and westerly wind force 5). We enter into Admiralty Bay (on King Georges Island, South Shetland Islands). It's a bit foggy and we can glimpse the landscape when it clears up briefly. There is another ship, a supply ship for one of the many scientific bases on this island. At 7.30 we arrive at Arctowski Station (Polish scientific base), but the base commandant has required us to wait until 8.00 for landing (it's sunday, and on sundays the Polish scientist sleeps in). You can see on the map, I have put the markers on the station building (if you zoom in in satellite mode).

Jour 11 - Gibbs Island

Pendant qu'on fait le tour d'Elephant Island par le nord-est (beaux paysages dans les "trous" de soleil et quelques icebergs), on a avant le repas on a une réunion d'information sur le kayak, puisqu'on s'est inscrit pour faire du kayak de mer en Antarctique. On fait partie du premier groupe, qui devrait faire une sortie demain à Half Moon Island, weather permitting bien sûr.

As we round the northeastern tip of Elephant Island (Cape Valentine), with beautiful mountains landscapes painted with rays of sun, we have a information meeting about kayaking. We signed up to go kayaking in Antarctica, how exciting! And we are in the first group, which should go out tomorrow at Half Moon Island, weather permitting of course.

Jour 11 - Elephant Island

On est le 11/12/13. Etonnant non? Lever 6h30 et petit tour dehors : on voit la terre! On voit quelques iles dont Elephant Island. C'est notre destination du jour, pas pour un débarquement (c'est souvent impossible à cause de la houle) mais pour s'approcher le plus possible de "Point Wild" (voir carte, zoomer à fond en vue "satellite"). Pendant toute la matinée, les nuages jouent avec le soleil, le soleil joue avec les glaciers, et c'est vraiment magnifique.

I wake up at 6.30 to go outside and see if we are nearing some land, and indeed we are! We can see some islands, including our morning destination of Elephant Island. We won't be landing (often impossible because of the swell) but we will try to get as close as possible to "Point Wild" ( see map, you can zoom it in satellite mode). Throughout the morning, the clouds are playing with the sun, the sun is playing with the mountains and the glaciers. It's magnificent. 

Jour 9 & 10 - En mer

Le capitaine explique dans son briefing matinal (et quotidien) que l'état des glaces ne permet pas le programme prévu aux Orcades du Sud (les glaces sont encore bien plus Nord que prévu et les Orcades sont inaccessibles). Donc décision a été prise de renoncer aux Orcades de faire route directe vers les Shetland du Sud (cap sur Elephant Island). On aura 2 jours de mer au lieu d'un mais un jour de plus autour de la Péninsule!

In his morning briefing, the captain explains that the pack ice is still too dense to allow us to go the the South Orkneys Islands as we hoped. So we will be directly going towards the Antarctic Peninsula, with a first stop planned at Elephant Island, weather permitting and ice permitting of course. This means we will have now two days at sea instead of one, but we will get one more day on the Peninsula.

Jour 8 - Drygalski Fjord (Géorgie du Sud)

Le bateau repart vers 13h30. L'après-midi est prévu en navigation, à longer la côte pour admirer le paysage pendant qu'on descend vers le sud et pour observer les oiseaux. Le temps est assez changeant avec quelques passages de neige, à la côte des nuages qui font apparaitre et disparaitre les montagnes, et des taches de soleil aussi. Jolies lumières. Pas beaucoup de vent, sauf quand on passe à l'ouvert des grandes baies où se jettent de nombreux glaciers, et tout à coup le vent se met à souffler très fort et très froid.

We leave Grytviken around 13.30 . The plan for the afternoon is to sail along the coast to the south, enjoying the landscape and watching the birds. The weather is changing, with some snow showers, mountain playing hide and seek with the clouds, patches of sun. Beautiful lights. Not a lot of wind, except when we sail at the opening of a bay with many glaciers, and suddenly the wind is blowing strong and cold.
