Georgie du Sud Jour 6, Grytviken

Nous n'avons pas le plaisir de la voix de Martin nous annonçant qu'il est 5h du matin cette fois-ci, le réveil est à 8h15 pour un petit-déjeuner à 9h. On est arrivé à Grytviken, pour changer il fait gris et il neige un peu. Ambiance très différente de ma précédente visite en decembre 2013. Grytviken est une ancienne station baleinière où les bâtiments ont été sauvegardés et sécurisés pour permettre aux visiteurs de s'y promener. Il y a également un superbe musée et sa petite boutique (très bien achalandée). A l'entrée de la baie, à King Edward Point, on y trouve les quelques personnes dépositaires de l'autorité locale (sous la houlette du gouverneur des Falklands et de la couronne britannique). Il faut surtout gérer les licences de pêche, et la préservation de l’environnement. Il y a aussi une petite station de recherche. Il n'y a du monde que l'été ici.

We don't have the pleasure of Martin's voice announcing that it's 5am today, the wake-up call is at 8.15 and breakfast is on at 9. We are moored in Grytviken, and once again the weather is grey and it's snowing on and off. Very different atmosphere to my previous visit in December 2013.  Grytviken is a former whaling station, and the buildings have been preserved and made safe for visitors. There is also a wonderful museum and a small (but very-well stocked) shop. At the bay's entrance, on King Edward Point, you find the local authorities (under the responsibility of the Governor of the Falklands, and ultimatelythe British crown). They mostly have in charge the fisheries policy, and environmental watch. There is also a small research station. People only live here in summer.

Georgie du Sud Jour 5, Saint Andrews Bay (2)

La météo devient à la fois fascinante et un peu angoissante. Les grains de neige et vent se succèdent en générant des périodes de "whiteout" (= on ne voit plus rien du tout). Le décor apparait et disparait selon les moments. Entre deux bourrasques je progresse au maximum sur la route du retour, et quand le vent revient je suis obligée de m'accroupir pour ne pas être jetée à terre. Mais l'ambiance est indescriptible tant c'est puissant et beau.

The weather turns to fascinating and scary at the same time. It's a succession of snow and wind showers, generating "whitouts" (= you don't see anything at all). The scenery disappears and reappears. Between two episodes of blizzard, I try to make way as fast as I can towards the beach, and when the wind comes back I have to crouch to avoid being swept to the ground. It's hard to describe the atmospher, it's so powerful and beautiful.

Georgie du Sud Jour 5, Saint Andrews Bay (1)

Notre deuxième débarquement se fait à partir de 16h à Saint Andrews Bay. C'est un gros morceau car on y trouve une des plus grosses colonies de manchots royaux de Géorgie du Sud. J'ai rajouté le point sur la carte. On débarque sur une grande plage, on devine le gros de la colonie dans le fond donc il va falloir marcher un peu, mais il y a déjà du monde sur la plage.

Our second landing of the day is from 16.00 at Saint Andrews Bay. It's an important landing site, as it hosts one of the most important king penguins colony in South Georgia. I've added the site on the map.We come ashore on a very large beach, and you can see the main colony in the background. It takes a little bit of walking to reach, but the beach itself is already pretty crowded.

Georgie du Sud Jour 5, Ocean Harbour (2)

Comme je l'ai dit, Ocean Harbour a abrité une station baleinière pendant une vingtaine d'années au début du XXème siècle. Il en reste quelques traces, un petit bâtiment, quelques épaves rouillées de machines et de cuves à huile... Ils sont considérés maintenant comme des objets historiques, donc on n'y touche pas. Certains trouvent que ça fait désordre (voir dépotoir), moi je trouve ça émouvant et j'aime bien ces traces d'une histoire humaine ancienne, même si pas très glorieuse. Aujourd'hui c'est surtout plein d'animaux bien sûr, les maintenant habituels éléphants de mer, otaries à fourrure et manchots royaux... Et le site est assez spectaculaire (et il neige toujours, plus ou moins selon les moments).

As I said, Ocean Harbour has hosted a whaling station for a couple of decades at the start of the 20th century. There are some traces left, a small building,  some rusted machinery and remnants of oil tanks... They are now considered as historical artifacts, so they should not be moved. Some may think it's not looking nice, but I find them moving and I enjoy these testimonies of human history, even if it's not the most glorious history. Today of course it's full of animals, the now usual fur and elephant seals and penguins (mostly king). And the site is spectacular (it's still snowing, on and off).

Georgie du Sud Jour 5, Ocean Harbour (1)

Martin nous réveille encore à 5h du matin pour nous dire qu'on peut se rendormir car le débarquement pré-soleil est annulé (pour cause que y'en a pas, de soleil, et qu'il neige). Bon, ça serait bien quand même que ça ne devienne pas une habitude... Vrai lever à 7h30, petit déjeuner à 8h, débarquement à 9h, on commence à être rodé. Ce matin on est à Ocean Harbour (voir la carte), un endroit très joli (il y a peu d'endroits pas jolis dans le coin) et qui me plait particulièrement car on y trouve des restes de l'exploitation baleinière et en particulier l'épave du Bayard. On a droit à un tour en zodiac autour de l'épave, je suis dans le premier.

Martin wakes us up again at 5.00 to let us know that we can go back to sleep, as the sunrise landing is cancelled (because there is no sun, and plenty of snow falling). OK, it would be nice if this didn't turn into a bad habit... As yesterday, second wake-up call at 7.30, breakfast at 8.00 and landing at 9.00, we are getting very well organized. This morning we are in Ocean Harbour (see the map), a very beautiful location (there are very few not beautiful locations in the area), and which I find really interesting because there are some remnants from the whaling era, and especially the wreck of the Bayard. We are offered a zodiac tour around the wreck, I manage to catch the first one.

Georgie du Sud Jour 4, Cooper Bay

Pendant le déjeuner on continue de naviguer vers le sud/est, et on recharge en hâte les batteries en prévision du prochain débarquement, qui a lieu vers 16h30 à Cooper Bay (je l'ai indiqué sur la carte). On est venu jusque là car cet endroit abrite une rare colonie de manchots gorfous macaronis, mais elle se mérite. Il y a beaucoup de vent et il neige (même grêle par moment), on doit débarquer sur une plage pleine d'otaries à fourrure, puis monter une pente assez abrupte et couverte de neige. Au sommet, on doit passer encore deux otaries à fourrure pas contentes (et je les comprends les pauvres, elles se sont décarcassées à monter jusque là pour être tranquilles et voilà que 50 bipèdes viennent les déranger).

During lunch we keep sailing towards the South/East, and everybody hurries to recharge the camera's batteries for the next landing. This will happen at 16.30 in Cooper Bay (I put it on the map). We came all the way here because this place hosts a rare colony of macaroni penguins, but you have to work for it. The landing is on a beach covered in fur seals, then you have to go up a rather steep hill, walking in snow. At the top, you have to go again pass two very unhappy fur seals (I can relate, they climbed all the way up there to be alone and they now have to deal with 50 humans in their quite spot).  

Georgie du Sud Jour 4, Gold Harbour (2)

Continuons le débarquement à Gold Harbour, et après les éléphants de mer passons aux manchots, qui sont principalement ici des manchots royaux (et quelques manchots papous perdus au milieu). C'est une colonie importante, pas la plus importante de l'île (mais vous ne perdez rien pour attendre) mais pour une première c'est quand même assez impressionnant.

We are still on land in Gold Harbour, and after elephant seals, let's get to the penguins. Here there are mostly king penguins (and a few gentoos). It's an important colony, not the most important of the island (stay tuned) by for a first it's already rather impressive.

Georgie du Sud Jour 4, Gold Harbour (1)

"Hello just a quick announcement to let you know that the sunrise landing this morning is cancelled, there is rain and wind, so you can go back to sleep" (Traduction : bonjour, une petite annonce pour vous dire que le débarquement de ce matin est annulé, il y a du vent et de la pluie, pas de soleil levant, vous pouvez retourner dormir).  Hmm Martin tu veux dire que tu nous réveilles à 5h du matin pour nous dire que tu nous réveilles pour rien? Bon, sur le coup je me rendors sans me faire prier (la déception viendra plus tard, bien réelle). Deuxième réveil à 7h30, cette fois c'est le bon. Petit déjeuner à 8h et on se prépare pour le débarquement du matin à Gold Harbour (voir on a fait du chemin depuis hier!). On a une bien meilleure visibilité, donc voilà un meilleur exemple du paysage de la Géorgie du Sud. C'est assez époustouflant, et démesuré.

So, Martin, you are actually waking us up to tell us we can go back to sleep now? At the time, I don't need to be convinced to continue sleeping (the real disappointment will come later). Second wake-up call at 7.30, this time it's for good. Breakfast at 8.00 and we get ready for a morning landing at Gold Harbour (see the map, we sure have covered some grounds since last night). We have a much better visibility, so here is a better example of a South Georgia's typical scenery. Rather mind-blowing, and everything seems oversized.

Géorgie du Sud Jour 3, Rosita Harbour

Je me suis réveillée très tôt pour voir l'arrivée sur la Géorgie du Sud. J'ai un souvenir ému des pics acérés couverts de neige, des glaciers spectaculaires dévalant dans la mer, donc à 6h je suis sur le pont, et euh... Désillusion. Le temps est complètement couvert, on devine les Iles Willis dans la brume, pour le reste pour l'instant il faut que je me contente de mes souvenirs... Petite consolation, on voit passer deux baleines à bosse le long du bateau (je n'ai pas pu faire de photo).

I wake up early to not miss the arrival in South Georgia. I have sharp memories of jagged peaks covered in snow, spectacular glaciers falling into the sea, so at 6 am I'm outside and... Disappointment. The weather is completely foggy, we can guess Willis Islands in the haze, other than that for now I will have to make do with the memories... As a consolation prize we see two humback whales, very close to the ship (I couldn't take pictures).

Géorgie du Sud Jour 2, toujours en mer

La nuit a été moins agitée que la précédente, ce qui n'est pas désagréable. Pendant la nuit on a passé la convergence antarctique, ce qui se ressent bien dans les températures extérieurs, passées aux alentours de 3°C (sans compter l'effet du vent). Et d'ailleurs, on voit notre premier iceberg tabulaire, si ça ce n'est pas une preuve! Un bon prétexte pour passer un peu de temps dehors pour autre chose que des oiseaux. On avance aussi encore les montres d'une heure, je ne sais plus trop où on en est par rapport à l'heure "officielle".

The night was better than the last, and no one is complaining. During the night we crossed the Antarctic convergence, which you can tell easily from the outside temperature, around 3°C (plus windchill). And we see our first tabular iceberg, so which more proof do you need? Good excuse to spend some time outside and photograph something else than the birds. We put our clock forward another hour, I'm not sure what our time lag is now compared to the "official" time.

Géorgie du Sud Jour 1, en mer

La nuit a été un peu agitée et le bateau a été équipé pour les conditions difficiles, mais ça va s'arranger petit à petit. Docteur Peter passe frapper à la porte de chaque cabine pour être sûre que tout le monde va bien. Petit déjeuner à 8h. La plage avant sera par la suite fermée pendant la navigation, ce qui est bien dommage car les espaces extérieurs sont quand même assez limités (et le plus accessible, celui de l'arrière du pont 3, est assez encombré par les zodiacs et des containers de matériel).

The night has not been quiet, and everything on the ship is prepared for difficult conditions, but it will get better during the day. Doctor Peter will knock on each cabin door every morning to make sure everybody is allright. Breakfast at 8am. The front deck will now be closed during sailing, which is a pity as the outside spaces are somewhat limited (and the best one, the rear of deck 3, is very busy with the zodiacs and containers with some mysterious gear).
