Ah ah... Je n'aime pas l'avion... Ca va être long!

On October 24th I have my last morning in Svolvaer, and it's rainy and windy, so I enjoy my comfortable cabin until the last possible moment. I was very happy to have found a direct flight to Oslo, until I see the plane... It's a very small propeller plane...And tbe pilot tells us that because of the wind he will have to take off towards the mountain and then to a very sharp U-turn... I don't like planes and this is going to be a long ride. It's actually less bumpy than I anticipated and I arrive in Oslo in the fog... Time to rest.

When traveling at this season in Lofoten, you always take a gamble with the weather. OK, to tell the truth, you take a gamble with the weather in Lofoten at every season, but I think I like snow days better than rainy days. Anyhow, I think I've had my fair share of good weather on this trip (better than I expected actually) and those days are gone. The forecast is not that discouraging at first, it says that it should stop raining mid-morning and then have some sun and clouds, so I'm hoping for some nice lights, and I get on the road for my last day here. Today's drive is to the East (and North) of Svolvaer, see on the map. The first stop is on Autnesfjord and the small church of Sidpollen.

OK, the storm warning was not a joke. This morning the wind is howling and snow showers are coming in rapid succession, beating the windows. The wind husts are shaking the cabin, which has probably seen way worse, but I'm quite happy I decided to anticipate my return and go through this in a sheltered home, rather than on the road. Looking at the wind map, it seems that it's blowing even worse in the South. Many Hurtigruten ships are waiting it out in a harbor.

I had planned for 4 nights in Hamnøy, and that was the third one so I should have another full day here and one night. But my aurora guide Jack told me that Tuesday there was a small winter strom forecast. Tuesday is tomorrow, the day I had planned to cross Lofoten again back to Svolvaer. And I'm not sure I want to do the drive with 40 knots of wind and horizontal rain. There is not a lot of shelter from the elements on that road. So I've decided to shorten my stay here, and drive back to Svolvaer today while the weather is still manageable. Last look on Eliassen, it seems that yesterday's rain took a more solid form on the mountains! There is a brand new layer of snow!

I don't set the alarm this morning, I have a pileup of tiredness from long days and short nights. And the forecast is for a cloudy day, but I'm woken up by a beautiful sunrise, right in my room's window... A shame to let all this nice light go to waste but I have a difficult start this morning. As I still have the wide-angle new lens on the camera I play with it locally. Lots of potential but I need to get used to the distortion.

The sun rises later and later (and sets sooner and sooner, we lose 8 minutes of daylight every 24hrs, it's fast). This morning sunrise is at a decent 8.20 and I enjoy it from the terrace. The day promises to be nice so I will try and enjoy. The plan is to drive, take side roads, and stop when I like the place (it can be often) and walk around a bit. I put my daily trip on the map.

vendredi 18 octobre 2019

Lofoten, jour 1

I actually had a good night's sleep in my big room that doesn't move and makes no noise. Grey day this morning while I have a first look at Lofoten from the window at the end of the hotel corridor (9th floor!). I have a slow start, pick-up of the rental car, grocery shopping as I now need to be self-sufficient for the meals! And I hit the road, not too early. I did a map for those interested.

This most beautiful day of the trip, which is fulfilling all its promises and more today, is also my last day on board, I will leave the ship tonight in Svolvaer (but my trip is not finished). Meanwhile, I enjoy what is left of the day, and we are nearing the most beautiful part of the most beautiful day, the sailing through Raftsundet. It's a narrow and winding passage, and we are getting closer to sunset so we can hope for nice lights. Let's start by leaving Stokmarknes, and head towards Lofoten, over there in the background.

Today is my favorite day of the whole journey, the one which I think goes through the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. But when I looked at the weather forecast yesterday, there were threats of a very cloudy day, whichi is a pity. I missed the stop in Harstad again in the morning, and part of the sunrise which I wasn't expecting to be so beautiful. I have the end of it, real nice. Where is my cloudy sky? (no complaints at all, but tip : do not trust the weather forecast).

Today is a day in the trip which I usually do not enjoy that much (there's bound to be some days less inspiring than others), and this morning I'm not too excited about the light. We are back in Havøysund early morning and we meet MS Nordnorge under the windmills.

mardi 15 octobre 2019

We can't have nice lights everyday... Especially when you get up too late, I seem to have missed a great sunrise at the stop in Vadsø early this morning. There are a few leftovers when I get out shortly before 8, but now that we are going East (and South) the sun rises up earlier.

lundi 14 octobre 2019

I grab a quick lunch and head out in the streets of Honningsvåg, with the main goal of finding (of course) a tripod. I go to the tourist shop nearby to ask if there is a chance to find this item, I leave with a map and two adresses. The first one is not good, but the second one, bingo! It's an electronic shop whose owner must be the all-in-one repairman as people come for appliances to fix (from cellphone to alarm clocks). Not only does he carry tripods, but there is even a choice! So I find one that will do the trick and I leave with my precious package.

Today was an absolutely amazing day, so it will be told over two messages. It starts with brilliant morning lights as we arrive in Havøysund. Showers moving on the pink horizon, dramatic sky over the Northernmost windmill field (yes, we are now in the area for all the "Northernmost" stuff). We meet MS Finnmarken.

dimanche 13 octobre 2019

As always, I have missed the stop in Harstad and I get out on deck as we leave. The sky is overcast this morning but there still are some lights on the snowy peaks. I don't go out much this morning, I'm a bit tired and I'm trying to sort out my photo gear problems.

samedi 12 octobre 2019

This morning we will arrive in the official North, above the Arctic polar circle. And you can feel that it's much colder out on deck. I did not calculate the time of the polar circle crossing, actually I thought I had missed it, but with the new schedule we sail there a bit later, and also we are late, again. Nice sunrise.

vendredi 11 octobre 2019

Trondheimfjord

With the new schedule, we are now arriving in Trondheim at 10.00 (instead of 8.00 before). So I was rejoicing in being able to see the arrival in Trondheim, which I kept on missing, until I realized that it was exactly the same route as when leaving Trondheim, a long sailing in the Trondheimfjord. Never mind, and let's watch anyway. The sky is grey this morning, very low clouds hanging below the mountain tops, interesting.

Urke

Urke is a charming small village at the end of  Hjørundfjord (to be precise, on the Norangsfjord which is a small branch). The location is incredible, albeit somewhat isolated (but you can also get there by road, at least in summer). There are less than 50 inhabitants all year round, but it gets busier in summer (holiday homes and camping), and in September/October the Hurtigruten ships call here every day.

Back to Hjørundfjord

Here I am, back in Norway with Hurtigruten. It's almost a pilgrimage in fact. In April 2006 I did my first trip aboard MS Lofoten from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Svolvaer, first trip of a long serie and still not tired of it. Back then, there were two of us, now I'm back to do almost the same trip alone. I booked this autumn trip because there were rumors it would be the last trip for MS Lofoten on the Coastal Express route, and I'm too attached to this ship to not be on it. It turns out she will sail again all through the end of 2020. But I maintained the trip anyway, and I will stop in Svolvaer on the way back, next step of my pilgrimage.

This time I flew direct from Pairs, not much to say about this but I arrive at night. I meet onboard for dinner a lovely woman from Strasbourg, with whom I've been in touch online for several years, she's also an addict of the line and of this particular ship. She is also on this trip and I'm happy to meet her for real. I settle in my (extremely tiny) cabin and then dinner, departure, sleep.

I set my clock to see if there were morning lights, and there are! A very nice dramatic sky with some sunrise lights, which then disappear in an instant. We are just out of the Stad Sea, which has been very quiet last night. There is snow already on the mountain tops!
