As we have some free time on our hands at the moment, I finished updating the trip report for Falklands Islands in Oct/Nov 2018. And since we have some extra time coming, I will try to do now the "South Georgia" part of the trip that followed!
It starts again here, last day on Sea Lion Island   and return to Stanley, waiting for departure.

Falklands, jour 9, jour 10...

4 novembre, jour 9

I wake up at 8am (ship's time), breakfast and at 10.30 we have an official briefing for an update.  The others are on the plane from Santiago to Punta Arenas, which is a very good start, but the next plane is delayed at least by 3 hours because of the weather. There is indeed a strong Northerly wind today, the sea is angry, and not leaving yesterday was maybe a good option. If we had left, today would be a really unpleasant day. Actually, Hurtigruten's Midnatsol had to turn around after leaving Ushuaia on the way to Antarctica, they didn't want to try out the Drake. Small consolation. And it's raining.

Falklands Jour 8 - l'attente

Once again I didn't hear the alarm clock on the phone this morning. I think it's actually not ringing anymore, I'll have to work this out when we get back. The bad news is that I missed the sunrise outing in Gypsy Cove... So I meet my colleagues again at breakfast. The bad news is that the international airport is closed today, so the schedule flight cannot land and is postponed to tomorrow... What? The rumor is that the army (which runs the airport) has exercises planned for today,  which is a bit hard to believe. If they deliberately chose to do military exercises on the one day per week there is a commercial flight, it's rather twisted.

Anyway, this means that we are not going at sea until tomorrow at best, but we will still board the ship which is ready for us, and Ole (the only WildPhoto member present) will try and organise excursions and animations for the few passengers that are already here. In addition to our small group, a few others had opted to visit Falklands on their own prior to the cruise, so there are about 15 passengers now (on 48 expected in total). Meanwhile, I talk a short walk in town, some shopping, a visit to the (wonderful) history museum. The monument in front of the church, a famous local landmark, is made with whale bones (and is called, of course, the Whalebone Arch).

[Note : I publish this article a long time after the trip, during the period of containment and its score of uncertainties and worries. This trip seems now so far away, this report somewhat futile, but it brings me some freedom and anchor, hopefully it will bring you some nice feelings as well]

Unfortunately, this is our last morning on Sea Lion Island, so I will try to take advantage of it as much as possible. Well before sunrise I return to the same location as yesterday. The light is different, less clouds so the light is less "subtle", but it's still very beautiful.

While waiting for the sunset, we head back inland to enjoy the warm lights on different subjects. I have learnt by now that to best photograph wildlife, it's good to be at eye level, so when the animal is small you need to lay down completely. Our efforts tonight are well rewarded thanks to the cooperation from these two-banded plovers. There are many of them, and as soon as we stop and wait they come foraging all around us.

Last photos of the morning, and there are not only gentoo penguins here. Caracaras are always on the lookout for ill or weak animals, here they have found what I think is an upland goose (male), at least as big as they are. So they are feasting in groups, and fights ensue.

This morning, my alarm did ring (at 4.30) and I heard it! Yay! And so glad I did, because the light this morning is spectacular. I go towards the big pond between the penguin colony and the sea, in the hope to see penguins on the move, and I am not disappointed (to be honest, the risk was low). There is some mist on the water and a very special atmosphere. I am almost alone (just a glimpse of another colleague every now and then) with some hundreds (thousands?) of penguins and dozens (hundreds?) of elephant seals. It's a weird feeling, but quite pleasing.

Falklands jour 5, Sea Lion Island

I slept through my alarm this morning, it's about 6.30 when I open my eyes. I get a bit of comfort because it's cloudy so no real sunset. Anyway, it's done. I meet with the others for breakfast. This morning's option (if we want to join, which will all do) is to take a short hike to a pond in the middle of the island, where we may see interesting animals. It's really nice to hike, the weather is getting better and we meet a lot of birds on the way. They are cautious, but we can see some of them from quite close if we stay still and silent. Here is a Magellan snipe.

So here I am, on the way to our next destination, which is Sea Lion Island, at the opposite end of the Falkland Islands, on the southernmost part (see the map).  I try to overcome the apprehension of the flight, and I have to say it's a really nice trip. The plane is flying low and I can enjoy the scenery, which is surprisingly diverse.

Falklands jour 4, dernier matin à Saunders Island

It's already our last morning here, that was way too short, and this morning we all rise up early to enjoy the last hours (4am is early enough). We scatter around the Neck. I will go up on the cliff all the way to the mixed albatros/rockhopper/cormoran colony, the furthest from our cabin. On the way I walk along the less mixed black browed albatros colony, and these are really beautiful birds.

Falklands jour 3, sunset on the Neck

[Note : I pick up this trip report again, a year after the trip. I may have forgotten some details, but the emotions are still there!].

After the meal, whichever it was, and a little rest, I go out again to enjoy the few hours until sunset. I start by going back to the rockhopper colony on the cliff. Near the colony there is a small creek which the penguins use to drink and shower. They don't seem bothered by my presence, but I stay on the edge of the colony and try to be low and quiet. They have a lot of interactions, caring ones between partners, more aggressive sometimes with others (it's a lot of noise mostly). I like their slanted eyebrows which make them seem angry all the time.

Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (2)

Let's come back to the King penguins. There is a small breeding colony here (not that common in the Falklands) with a few dozen individuals. Some are walking along the beach in a detached way (but still with pride). They have really impressive feet, look at these hiking boots, it's strong stuff!

Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (1)

The alarm rings dutifully before 4am, but the wind and rain, which started last evening, do not seem to calm down. So we stay wisely in bed. Then breakfast, quick look at yesterday's photo, including post-processing course by Ole, and the rain finally stops late morning. So everybody goes out. There is still a lot of wind, but we'll make do. It's actually nice to have the wind, as it creates beautiful waves and surf and sea spray. I sit on the beach for a while, I'm not sure I'm photographing penguins (gentoo) on a wave background, or the sea with a penguin foreground. Anyhow, it's pretty wonderful. I take way too many pictures and here is a small sample of penguins coming in and out of the waves, tasting the water, and other beach activities.

We have a rest while the MS Expedition (in mooring here) gets her passengers back. David has welcomed them on the beach with all the proper instructions, and wait until they are all back onboard to head home. And so we are left all alone with nature and wildlife. Note that the cabin is basic in architecture, but its firm tether in the ground is a testimony to the possible harsh weather conditions.

Falklands jour 2, Saunders Island, premier matin

After a good first night, things are starting to get serious. We are here to take photos, and good photos require good light, so we are counting very much on sunrises and sunsets. Weather forecast is encouraging, so we all set up our clocks early this morning. Sunrise is at 5.20am and it's good to be out at least one hour before that, so it's really early. But we did not wake up for nothing!

Falkland Islands are made of two main islands (West Falkland and  East Falkland) and scores of smaller islands all around. We have two of them on our schedule for this week, and the first one is Saunders Island, on the Northwestern part of the archipelago (I'm putting together a map). The only transportation possible is by plane, from the FIGAS company (Falkland Islands Government Air Service). They run five 8-seaters "Islander" planes, and their pilots can fly in almost any type of weather. You use thess planes as you would a taxi, but with a lot more advanced planning. I'm not a big fan of planes, and these felt initially a bit too small for comfort. First step, each of us is weighted, with all their luggage, as every kilo matters (and how these kilos are placed in the plane, also). We are then scientifically divided in two groups, each one in a plane, and off we go.

I had a trip planned in the far South in December 2016, but fate had other plans, and this trip couldn't happen. With the advance payment that I got back, I tried in April 2017 a solo trip and a new company, WildPhoto Travel (which organizes trips for photographers in small groups). It was a more than positive experience, and I learnt that they were organizing a trip focused on South Georgia : 2 weeks on board Polar Pioneer, including journey from and to the Falklands, with about 50 passengers. This seemed like the perfect occasion to go back, in a different way. And while I'm travelling so far away, I also chose the pre-cruise week in Falklands, with the same company, but even smaller group (5 + a photo guide, and land-based). When I say "so far away", it's here, between South America and Antarctic Peninsula, Roaring Forties and Howling Fifties...

mercredi 4 décembre 2013

Jour 4 - Port Stanley (Falkland Islands)

A suivre).

I am up at 6.45 this morning to get breakfast before the arrival in Port Stanley, which I watch from the outside decks. There is a lot of wind, and showers (rain, for the moment) with sun in between. We dock at "Fipass", commercial floating dock just outside of town (built for temporary military use in 1983, and still in service! You can see the map, I have put the "Port Stanley" pin on the dock). We have to wait for clearance by local authorities before we can go ashore, and it takes a bit of time since we come from Argentina, which is a bit suspect in itself here. Meanwhile, we have our first look at the town, its bright colorful houses, even a glimpse of the church and its famous "Whalebone Arch", bottom right on the picture below. There will be no pictures from closer, because... you'll see.

mardi 3 décembre 2013

Jour 3 - West Point Island (Falkland Islands)

We sail to the north with the plan of landing at Carcass Island, but when we arrive arount 15.30, there is too much wind for a safe landing on the beach, which is directly open to the wind. With a apologetic thought for the lady owner, who has been baking cakes and brewing tea for all 240 passengers, we turn to Plan B (we have been told we have to be flexible). Plan B is a nearby island, West Point Island, with a landing site sheltered from the wind (check the map). It does seem to be a known shelter, because there already are four sailboats anchored in the bay when we arrive. We also meet the "Condor", a small yellow boat who does round between Carcass and West Point and offers bird-watching cruises. Did I tell you that the Falklands are famous for the abudance of birds, both in species and in numbers? A paradise for bird lovers.

Jour 3 - New Island (Falkland Islands)

We wake up at 5.30 to have an early breakfast, because our first landing in the Falklands is planned for this morning. The boat is almost full : 239 passengers, divided into 8 groups for landings. In the Falklands we can all go ashore at the same time, in South Georgia and Antarctica only 100 people can be ashore, so the groups will rotate for landings. This morning group 1 will go first, at the next landing it will be group 2, and so on. We are in group 3, and we land at 7.30. This first landing is on New Island, at the SW tip of the Falkland archipelago. (I have started a map for the trip).
