Vestfjord, Lofoten et lumières du soir

Après l'escale de Bodø on repart en direction des Iles Lofoten et il fait toujours aussi beau. Avec la tempête pas si loin derrière nous, je redoutais un peu la traversée du Vestfjord mais la mer est très calme et j'apprécie encore plus les lumières du couchant sur le mur des Lofoten. A refaire ce voyage plusieurs fois, j'ai maintenant des repères, des endroits ou des vues que je guette, comme ce passage du phare de Landegode qui marque l'entrée du Vestfjord, et pourtant c'est à chaque fois différent. Différente météo, différentes heures de lever/coucher du soleil, différentes lumières, différentes couleurs. Paysages qui deviennent familiers et pourtant m'émerveillent toujours... Est-ce que je me lasserai un jour? Pas aujourd'hui en tout cas.

After the stop in Bodø, we head towards the Lofoten Islands and the weather is still as beautiful. With the storm not so far behind us, I feared a little for the crossing of the Vestfjord, but the sea is completely flat and I enjoy even more the sunset behind the Lofoten wall. By taking this strip several times, I now have personal beacons, places or viewpoints I'm on the lookout for, like the Landegode lighthouse before entering the Vestfjord, and yet it's different every time. Different weather, different time of sunset/sunrise, different lights, different colors. The landscape is becoming familiar and yet still surprising and awe-inspiring. Will I ever tire of it? Not today, anyway.

Cercle polaire et lumières du matin

Une nuit de près de douze heures, ça fait du bien! J'ai mis le réveil ce matin un peu avant 7h pour aller voir le passage du cercle polaire, et c'était une bonne idée parce qu'il fait un temps magnifique! Les lumières du soleil levant sur Hestmanøy (L'Ile du Cavalier) sont somptueuses. Le soleil illumine le rocher mythologique petit à petit, de derrière les montagnes On a bien le temps d'en profiter car on avance très au ralenti, on attend le passage d'un cargo dans l'autre sens avant de pouvoir s'engager dans un passage un peu plus étroit. Du coup, on passe le cercle polaire assez tard, vers 7h45. On a encore perdu le pari sur l'heure de passage!

We sleep for over 12 hours, and it feels really good! I put the alarm clock shortly before 7 am, I want to be outside for the Polar Circle passage. And no regrets, because the weather and lights are incredible! Colors of the rising sun over Hestmanøy (the Horseman island) are out of this world. The sun sheds light on the mythological rock from behind the mountains. We have plenty of time to enjoy the view because we are cruising very very slowly (we are waiting for a cargo ship coming in the opposite direction to engage in a narrower passage. We pass the Polar Circle rather late, around 7.45. Once again, we failed the "guess the time" challenge!

Trondheim et arcs-en-ciel

Effectivement ça a pas mal remué jusqu'à tard dans la nuit. Le bateau roule beaucoup, les mouvements sont lents mais amples et dans les couchettes on passe des heures à glisser alternativement vers le pied et la tête du lit. Pas de bobo, mais pas beaucoup de dodo non plus.  On arrive à Trondheim un peu en retard, vers 9h , mais quand même moins en retard que le bateau dans l'autre sens (le MS Nordkapp), qui arrive juste devant nous alors qu'il est prévu à 6h30. Si il y a des gens dedans qui voulaient reprendre le train pour Oslo, ben ils ont raté le train! Il y a de très belles lumières ce matin, et ça va être un peu le thème de la journée : averses, arcs-en-ciel et pinceaux de soleil.

As forecasted, the beginning of the night was very bumpy. The ship rocks and rolls, with slow but wide movements, and in bed we spend several hours sliding alternatively towards the feet of the bed and towards the head. No harm done, but very little sleep. We arrive late in Trondheim, around 9 am, and the Southbound ship is very late also, since it arrives right before us instead of its scheduled time of 6.30 . The passengers who had planned to take the train back to Oslo have now missed it! The lights this morning are very beautiful, and it will be the theme of the day : rainshowers, rainbows and rays of sunshine.

Hjørundfjord, retour

Urke, au fait, c'est là! Et donc une fois qu'on est là, on n'a pas trop le choix : il faut faire demi-tour et repartir en sens inverse. Ca permet de profiter à nouveau des paysages, des montagnes, des petites maisons, des cascades, et des premières couleurs de l'automne. Il fait un poil meilleur, la pluie s'est arrêtée. On se régale les yeux.

Urke, by the way, is here. So once you here, there aren't much choice but turn around and go back the same way. It's good because you can enjoy once again the mountains, the small houses, the waterfalls, and the early colors of autumn. The weather is getting better, the rain has stopped, and our eyes are very happy.

Hjørundfjord, aller

Donc, 9h de bus plus tard... Vers 5h du matin (oui oui), nous voilà à bord à Ålesund. Les formalités d'embarquement ont été réduites à leur plus simple expression : des enveloppes avec des noms sur une table et chacun prend la sienne. On a quand même eu droit à un peu de nourriture chaude en arrivant, assez bienvenue. Dans l'ensemble il faut reconnaitre que ce désagrément a été bien géré par Hurtigruten. On rejoint la cabine et on verra plus tard pour les sacs et le reste, pour l'instant, dodo. Et c'est court parce que je me réveille juste au moment où le bateau quitte le quai, vers 9h30. Et je ne veux assez rapidement être dehors, parce qu'aujourd'hui on va remonter le Hjørundfjord et il parait que c'est vraiment beau (c'est un ajout assez récent au programme automnal de l'Express-Cotier). Donc je sors sur le pont après avoir attrapé un café, et je me rend compte qu'on est pas au quai habituel, mais on est de l'autre côté de la ville, au terminal des gros bateaux de croisière (et des bateaux de pêche, visiblement). On a donc une vue différente sur le Mont Aksla et son observatoire.

So, nine hours by bus later... Around 5 am (this is unfortunately right...) we are finally aboard the MS Lofoten in Ålesund. The boarding formalities couldn't be less complicated : a bunch of enveloppes with names on a table, and each person picks his/hers. We are fed some welcome warm food. Altogether, I have to say that this little unfortunate adventure has been really well handled by Hurtigruten. Still, we are more than happy to enter our cabin at last and we don't bother too much with unpacking before falling into bed. It's only a brief rest because I wake up rather abruptly just as the ship departs at 9.30. I don't want to stay inside since we are going to enter the Hjørundfjord and it's said to be quite beautiful (a recent addition to Hurtigruten Fall's program). So I grab a quick coffee and head outside. I then find out that we weren't at the usual Hurtigruten quay, but rather on the other side of town, at the terminal for big cruise ships (and fishing vessels, obviously). This gives us a different point of view on Mount Aksla and its observatory.

Bergen, départ inattendu

Du fait de notre arrivée anticipée à Bergen, on a une journée (presque) complète avant l'embarquement. Le MS Lofoten doit partir à 20h et on pense embarquer vers 16 ou 17h, histoire de s'installer tranquillement dans la cabine, reprendre ses marques, et diner avant le départ. Mais on a donc le temps de se promener à Bergen, et ... il pleut. On voulait reprendre le téléphérique de Fløybanen, mais comme on ne voit pas le haut d'en bas, on se dit que la vue ne va pas être terrible. On va faire un tour au marché aux poissons sur le port (un peu plus actif que l'hiver), et on va visiter le Musée Hanséatique, qu'on n'a jamais pu visiter jusque là car les heures d'ouverture hivernales sont très réduites.
Le musée est situé juste à l'entrée du quartier historique de Bryggen et reconstitue l'intérieur d'une maison de commerce à l'époque où les marchands allemands de la Ligue Hanséatique entretenaient avec la Norvège un important commerce, institutionnalisé, principalement autour de la morue. C'est intéressant à visiter, mais il n'y a quasiment aucune explication donc il est préférable de prendre une visite guidée je pense (ou sinon comme nous acheter un livret-guide à l'entrée).

Our anticipated arrival in Bergen now gives us almost a day of city exploring before embarkation. The MS Lofoten should leave at 8pm and we have planned to check-in around 4 or 5pm, to give us time to get settled in the cabin, walk around the ship to see if anything has changed, and have dinner before departure. So we have time to walk around town and... it's raining. We thought of going up the Fløybanen cable car again, but we can't see the top from the ground, so I'm not sure the view will be that exciting. We go to the fish market and farmers market near the harbour (the market is more active than in winter), and we go to the Hanseatic Museum, which we never could visit before because of the reduced opening hours in winter.
The museum is located at the entrance of the historical neighborhood of Bryggen, and it brings to life the interior of a trade house, at the time when German merchants of the Hanseatic League had an important, institutionalized trading system with Norway, mostly around stokkfish and fish oil. The museum is nicely done and interesting, but there are little explanations in the museum, so it's a good idea to buy a guide book (or do a guided tour).

Stockholm-Oslo-Bergen en train

On se lève assez tôt le matin car on doit prendre le train pour Oslo (et bien sûr, il fait super beau!). Et ce n'est en fait que la première étape de notre marathon en train, qui devrait nous amener ce soir à Bergen si tout va bien. Au départ le plan était de passer la nuit à Oslo et prendre le train Oslo-Bergen demain, mais on n'a vraiment pas de chance, parce que demain tous les trains Oslo-Bergen sont annulés pour cause de travaux sur la ligne. Du coup, on enchaine. Départ 8h Stockholm, arrivée vers 14h à Oslo, une grosse heure d'escale, puis train pour Bergen où on doit arriver vers 23h. Les trains suédois, comme les trains norvégiens, ont plein d'avantages : modernes, confortables, pas cher si on prend les billets en avance (ça va nous coûter environ 50€ pour l'ensemble du trajet), et ils ne vont pas très vite donc on a bien le temps de profiter du paysage!

We wake up rather early this morning since we take an early train to Oslo (and of course, the sun is shining bright!). And it will only be the first leg of our train marathon, which should get us to Bergen tonight if all goes well. The initial plan was to spend the night in Oslo and take the Oslo-Bergen train tomorrow, but we are out of luck, since all trains tomorrow are cancelled because of railroad work, so we have to cram both trips in one day. We leave Stockholm around 8 am, arrive in Oslo at 2pm, have a short lay-over and then take the train to Bergen where we should arrive at 11pm. As their Norwegian counterparts, Swedish trains have a lot of advantages : modern, comfortable, cheap if you take the tickets in advance (the whole trip costs us around 50€), and they don't go very fast so you can enjoy the view!

Stockholm sous la pluie

Pour notre deuxième jour à Stockholm on a prévu de faire un tour en bateau dans l'archipel. Mais ce matin il ne fait vraiment pas beau du tout. Froid, vent, et surtout il pleut à verse. Pas génial pour le tourisme en extérieur. Du coup, on se rabat sur une visite de musée. Le Nationalmuseum est fermé pour rénovation, donc on se décide finalement pour le Nordiska Museet (musée nordique). C'est un musée dédié à l'histoire culturelle et l'ethnographie de la Suède depuis 1520 jusqu'à nos jours. Il a été fondé par Artur Hazelius à la fin du 19ème siècle. Un bâtiment impressionnant a été construit spécialement, avec dès l'entrée une statue spectactulaire du roi Gustave Vasa (qui n'est pas le même Gustave que celui du bateau Vasa, ça peut prêter à confusion. Ce Gustave-là est considéré comme le roi fondateur de la nation suédoise).

For our second day in Stockholm, we want to do a boat trip in the archipelago. But this morning it's cold, windy and rainy (a lot), not the best weather for outdoor tourism. So in the morning we opt for another museum visit. The Nationalmuseum is closed for renovation, so we choose the Nordiska Museet. It's a museum dedicated to cultural history and ethnography of Sweden since 1520. It was founded by Artur Hazelius at the end of the 19th century. An impressing building was purposely built, and you are welcome at the entrance by a spectacular statue of Gustav Vasa (which is not the same Gustav who build the Vasa ship, it's a bit confusing. This Gustav is considered as the founder of the Swedish nation).

Stockholm - Musée Vasa

Nous voilà donc repartis pour faire un tour sur l'Express-Cotier (quand on aime, tout ça tout ça), mais cette fois le voyage commence par Stockholm. Je sais, Stockholm n'est pas en Norvège, mais ça change un peu. Après deux jours dans la capitale suédoise on a prévu un marathon en train pour rejoindre Bergen via Oslo. Passons sur les péripéties de voyage liées à la grève des pilotes d'Air France et sur l'installation dans un hôtel-bateau avec vue sur un des nombreux plans d'eau de Stockholm, et dès le matin on prend le ferry pour aller visiter le musée du Vasa, qui est la principale raison pour laquelle j'ai voulu venir ici.

Once again we are on our way to Hurtigruten’s Coastal Express (I’m not sure I’ll ever tire of it), and this time the trip actually starts in Stockholm. I know, Stockholm is not in Norway, but it makes for a little variation on the same trip. We will spend 2 days in Sweden’s capital city, and then get to Bergen with a train marathon via Oslo. Let’s not spend time on a stressful plane ride (threatened by Air France pilots strike) and a late arrival at our hotel/boat with views on City Hall and water. Early the first morning, we take the Djugarden ferry to go to the Vasa Museum (the main reason I wanted to visit Stockholm!).

Norvège, again...

Eh oui, encore. Après le sud, le nord! Je repars avec Hurtigruten (et particulièrement avec le MS Lofoten), à une saison que je ne connais pas encore. J'espère de belles couleurs d'automne et des aurores boréales! A bientôt pour le récit complet.
