We have a rest while the MS Expedition (in mooring here) gets her passengers back. David has welcomed them on the beach with all the proper instructions, and wait until they are all back onboard to head home. And so we are left all alone with nature and wildlife. Note that the cabin is basic in architecture, but its firm tether in the ground is a testimony to the possible harsh weather conditions.

I'm beginning to appreciate how privileged we are to be there. We are free to come and go as we want and when we want. We set ourselves a time for dinner, but then it's free roaming for everyone, according to their personal rythm and interests. We are of course required to respect the animals (do not get close, do not get in their way, no sudden movement or noise, of course do not disturb the nests...) and our presence does not seem to bother them. I spend some time contemplating the gentoo penguins on their small colonies just under our cabins, between both beaches on the Neck.

Nesting has started and they are very busy. They are defending their small bit of territory, and the males wander the beach for a serious business, which is bringing back rocks to their lady proving their ability to care for the well-being of the family. The rocks will be used to build the round nest, hosting two successive eggs. Some nests already have eggs.

This one has a lot of ambition (or a lot of love) and tries to bring back a rock bigger than his head.

Too much ambition actually, as the rock falls down before he makes it back to the nest. He looks around sheepishly to see if someone has spotted this defeat...

And then he decides on a much more manageable option (and yes, this one makse it back to the nest!).

Rather than a rock, some opt for a piece of sea cabbage, found in quantity at the edge of the beach.

Here is some sea cabbage, framing a penguin highway between the sea (behind me) and the colony (in the background).

When the nesting has started, mum and dad will alternate in incubating the eggs (and later on, care for the chicks) while the other go out at sea all day to fish. So in the evening, penguins come out of the water to go back to the colony. There are quite a lot of them, but the beach is very large, and I spend quite a lot of time on the edge of the water trying to guess where the next penguin will come out. The swell is stong so we see them often at the last second.

As you can see, quite a crowd is building up. This it the largest beach, opening to the North/East. In the background on the right, the coast we explored this morning where you can (sort of) guess the rockhoppers and albatros colonies.

And that same beach, but looking on the other side. There is some wind, giving this "mist" effect on the ground as the sand flies around. Once off the water, the penguins take some time to groom themselves and have a short rest before heading towards the colony.

Some penguins are also going back into the water, even if they do not always seem convinced it's a great idea.

Before jumping in the water they always seem to "taste" it, I don't know if they actually drink it or if they are looking for something (smell of fish?).

The day at sea must be difficult and tiring, and some penguins come back injured. We see some of them limping or dragging a limb. The weaker ones are easy preys for scavenger birds,  like this turkey vulture eating a carcass. Circle of life and everything.

This caracara looks on, hoping for some scraps from the feast...

While the turkey vulture seems to pick his next meal.

Another frequent bird is the Magellanic oystercatcher. I think the one on the foreground is nesting, while the other looks out for danger. So I don't linger. If they feel too threatened they will leave the nests, and there are many creatures interested in the eggs.

I cross to the other beach, smaller and opening towards South/West (so on the sunset side). Just to give you an idea of how close to the colonies our home is...

A few attempts of penguin silhouettes at sunset...

And some are still diligently collecting rocks.

On this other beach there are also penguins coming in and out of the water, and some oystercatchers. I sit on the beach waiting for the sun to come down, while penguins walk back and forth around me. The colors are subtle tonight, but the moment is very magical!

We go back to bed early after a friendly dinner, because tomorrow the sun while rise early as well (or so we hope).
