Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (2)

Revenons donc à nos manchots royaux. Il y en a une petite colonie ici (colonie de reproduction, ce qui n'est pas courant aux Falklands), avec peut-être quelques dizaines d'individus. Certains se baladent sur la plage d'un air nonchalant mais tout de même assez fiers. Ils ont des pattes impressionnantes, regardez ces chaussures de marche, c'est du costaud!


Let's come back to the King penguins. There is a small breeding colony here (not that common in the Falklands) with a few dozen individuals. Some are walking along the beach in a detached way (but still with pride). They have really impressive feet, look at these hiking boots, it's strong stuff!

Là on voit bien sur la falaise la colonies de gorfous sauteurs. Comme ils aiment bien faire compliqué, ils rentrent et sortent de l'eau depuis les rochers, juste là où les vagues brisent assez furieusement. Je n'ai pas tenté de m'approcher sur les rochers glissants avec ma cheville en vrac, mais Ole est allé voir et nous raconte qu'il a cru plusieurs fois que les animaux allaient être fracassés sur les rochers, mais non, ils supportent. Sacré bestiaux.

Here you can see on the cliff the rockhopper colonies. Rockhopper will enter (and exit) the water just at the foot of the cliff, where the waves are crashing furiously against the rocks. I didn't try to get closer on the slippery rocks with my weak ankle, but Ole tried to get close and tell us he has thought many times that the birds would be killed by the waves and pressure. But they just get out fine and happy. Tough little critters.

Les manchots royaux vont aussi en mer, mais certains restent sur le rivage toute la journée, en particulier ceux qui sont en phase de mue. Ils passent leur temps à se trifouiller dans les plumes pour enlever les anciennes. C'est un moment où ils sont assez fragiles car ils ne peuvent pas se baigner (donc pas manger) et puis on dirait aussi qu'ils se sentent un peu bêtes avec leur plumage à trous. Je m'efforce donc de ne pas les embêter, pour ne pas les forcer à partir de cet endroit où ils se sentent en sécurité.

King penguins also go out at sea, but some remain on the shore all day long, particularly those in the moulting phase. They spend their time nudging their feathers to remove the old ones. It's a time when they are a bit fragile, because they cannot swim (so they don't feed) and also they look a little bit self-conscious of their patched up feathers. I do my best not to bother them, so that they don't feel like they have to leave this place where they feel secure.

Je me dirige ensuite sur la partie la plus douce de la bande côtière, avant la falaise aux gorfous. On y trouve ce surprenant squelette de baleine, dont on se demande comment il est arrivé là (en fait, les os ont été remonté un par un depuis la plage et ré-arrangé par la famille de David, il y a de si nombreuses années que David a oublié les détails).

I keep on walking towards the mellowest part of the coast, before the rockhopper cliff. We can see here this surprising whale skeleton, and we wonder how it arrived here (we learn later that the bones were picked up one by one from the beach and rearranged here by David's family, such a long time ago that David doesn't quite remember when).

Je vous présente un nouvel habitant du coin, le mâle de l'oie (ou bernache ou ouette) de Magellan, qu'on trouve en abondance dans toutes les Falklands. Du coup, on a tendance à ne pas les photographier car c'est un peu comme les pigeons chez nous... Mais il a une bonne tête quand même, et de la voix quand on se rapproche des nids.

Let me introduce you to another local, the male of the upland goose, found widely across Falklands. So widely that we can forget to take a picture, as it's a bit like pigeon at home... But he looks quite handsome actually, and he lets me very loudly aware of when I'm getting too close to a nest.

J'ai voulu monter sur cette bande côtière herbeuse car Ole m'a dit que c'était plein de manchots de Magellan, et que j'aimerai bien les voir d'un peu plus près et un peu plus longtemps. Au début je ne vois rien, car ils sont timides, alors je m'asseois et j'attends, et mon attente est récompensée car ils commencent à sortir de leur terrier à droite et à gauche. Comme je ne bouge pas ils ne se préoccupent pas de moi et vaquent à leurs occupations.

I wanted to come to this grassy hilly area, because Ole told me it was full of Magellanic penguins, and I would like to see them a little bit closer and a little bit longer. At first I see nothing, so I sit and wait, and they start to pop up from their burrows left and right. As I keep still, they do not worry about me and go on with their business.

J'en observe un (ou une) qui "tond" avec application tout autour de son terrier et ramène les petites touffes d'herbe à l'intérieur, j'imagine pour garnir son nid.

I watch one picking up grass methodically around its burrough and bringing back the grass bundle inside (to make the nest cozy, I guess).

Socialisation (prudente) avec les voisins, ici la femelle du male oie précédent (enfin, c'est peut-être pas sa femelle à lui, mais c'est une femelle de la même espèce, enfin vous comprenez).

(Careful) socialization with the neighbors, here the female of the male goose from above (it's maybe not exactly "his" female, but it's a female from the same species, you get it).

De toute façon c'est l'heure du repas pour nous (déjeuner, 16h, ou peut-être diner, normal, de toute façon on est tous en décalage horaire et puis c'est l'heure qui nous arrange). Et petit temps de repos avant d'attaquer le coucher de soleil!

It's meal time anyway for us (lunch, 4pm, or maybe it's dinner, anyway it's fine, we all are jetlagged and it's a time that suits us). And a little bit of rest before heading out again for the sunset!
