Falkland Islands are made of two main islands (West Falkland and  East Falkland) and scores of smaller islands all around. We have two of them on our schedule for this week, and the first one is Saunders Island, on the Northwestern part of the archipelago (I'm putting together a map). The only transportation possible is by plane, from the FIGAS company (Falkland Islands Government Air Service). They run five 8-seaters "Islander" planes, and their pilots can fly in almost any type of weather. You use thess planes as you would a taxi, but with a lot more advanced planning. I'm not a big fan of planes, and these felt initially a bit too small for comfort. First step, each of us is weighted, with all their luggage, as every kilo matters (and how these kilos are placed in the plane, also). We are then scientifically divided in two groups, each one in a plane, and off we go.

Let's be honest, when we say "Falkland" most people don't know where it is or what it looks like, and if there hadn't been a sad story of a territorial war with Argentina a few years ago (decades, even), we may not even have heard about it. So, here it is, a vast desert-like, wind-swept territory, spanning 12.000km², with 3000 people living there (most of them in the capital, Port Stanley), the vast majority of British origin (and more British than the British themselves). So overall, it's not densely populated, and you can clearly see that during the flight, as our plane is flying very (very!) low.

It's actually not that deserted, because in addition to the 3000 humans, there are over 450.000 sheep... Sheep farming (for wool, mostly) is, along with commercial fishing and tourism, one of the main economic activity of the Falkland.

It's the place to come if you want peace and quiet, and some are embracing this spirit.

The small planes are very stable and sturdy, thanks to their propellers built very close to the plane's body. As the weather is getting nicer and nicer, and there isn't much wind, it's actually a very fun trip.

We land in Saunders Island,  welcomed by David Pole-Evans and his wife Carol, the island's owners. Yes, in Falkland you can buy your own island. Google Map proudly indicates "Saunders Island Airport" with an impressive land imprint, but actually, this is the airport (plus a small steel shed).

David's family has lived on this island for a while, and they run a big sheep farm (with about 6000 sheep, running free on the land). They also welcome tourists on their island, with several lodging options. We will spend the first night at the "Settlement", ie the big city, ie 5 or 6 houses along with farming sheds, vehicles, machines and all the bits and bobs to be mostly self-sufficient, as the nearest shop is a two-hours plane ride away.

The weather is good and we can hope for a nice sunset, so Ole insists that David takes us tonight at the "rookery", hosting a colony of one of the island's penguin species, namely the rockhopper penguin. One hour of bumpy 4-wheel drive later, here we are, with precious little time before sunset. Twelve hours ago we were in an international airport, and now we are in the middle of nowhere looking at weird wild creatures. It's a bit brutal. There are several hundreds of penguins on the slope of a hill, moving, jumping, screaming, and I feel a little overwhelmed. I don't really know where to stand, where to look, and where to photograph. The penguins are quite cute and funny though.

Some imperial shags also in the middle of the colony, with their piercing blue eyes and orange sponges on their nose...

The penguins come to the colony for breeding, and the couples are already formed. There is a lot of cuddling, reciprocal grooming, tenderness and complicity.

Later in the week I will make the most of my companions' experience, and especially of Ole's kind willingness of sharing his knowledge, and I will take many lessons in pictures taking and editing. I'm not overly enthusiastic by these first pictures and first editing attempt, but it's a start. But I'm very enthusiastic about the incredible moment!

Bumpy (and nightly) return, as David tells us a bit about his family's history and his life here. It requires a certain state of mind, the life here is physically difficult and isolation is strong.  On the other hand, the proximity to nature is rewarding, and there is a very fierce sense of community and help among the islanders. And great progress, internet is now available! Carol has prepared dinner for us. There is a good feeling in our group, which is good news (particularly for the next 3 days, when we will live in close proximimty).
