Falklands jour 3, Saunders Island, surf & turf (1)

Le réveil sonne consciencieusement avant 4h du matin, mais le vent et la pluie, qui ont commencé hier soir, ne semblent pas presser de s'en aller. On reste donc sagement au lit. Petit-déjeuner, debrief des photos d'hier, petit cours express de retouche photo par Ole, et la pluie finit par s'arrêter en fin de matinée. Donc hop, tout le monde dehors. Il y a encore beaucoup de vent, mais on va s'y faire, on va s'y faire d'autant plus que ça lève une très jolie houle sur la mer avec de beaux rouleaux et des embruns. Je reste assez longtemps assise sur la plage, je ne sais plus si je photographie les manchots (papous) sur fond de vagues, ou la mer avec premier plan de manchot, en tout cas c'est très très beau. J'ai fait bien trop de photos et je vous en livre un petit florilège, avec manchots entrant ou sortant de l'eau, la goutant et autres activités de plage.

The alarm rings dutifully before 4am, but the wind and rain, which started last evening, do not seem to calm down. So we stay wisely in bed. Then breakfast, quick look at yesterday's photo, including post-processing course by Ole, and the rain finally stops late morning. So everybody goes out. There is still a lot of wind, but we'll make do. It's actually nice to have the wind, as it creates beautiful waves and surf and sea spray. I sit on the beach for a while, I'm not sure I'm photographing penguins (gentoo) on a wave background, or the sea with a penguin foreground. Anyhow, it's pretty wonderful. I take way too many pictures and here is a small sample of penguins coming in and out of the waves, tasting the water, and other beach activities.

Pour me dégourdir un peu les jambes je marche un peu le long de la plage et je retombe sur mes huitriers d'hier (ou leurs copains). En fait ils ne sont pas en train de couver, il y a carrément des poussins! Ils sont tellement bien camouflés que j'ai failli marcher dessus (pardon). Du coup à nouveau je m'éloigne à distance respectueuse pour les observer un peu. Vous les avez trouvés?

I stretch my legs a little along the shore and I find again the oystercatchers I saw yesterday (or friends). They are not actually incubating eggs as I thought, the chicks are already there! And they are so well camouflaged that I almost step on them (sorry). So I back away respectfully and watch them for a bit. Did you find them?

Ils restent la plupart du temps près de maman (ou papa?) mais font parfois quelques escapades plus loin.

They stay most of the time near mom (or dad?) but sometimes wander further off.

Mais papa (ou maman?) veille et quand ils s'éloignent trop s'occupe de les ramener près des parents. Tout petit comme ça c'est une proie facile pour rapaces et charognards.

But dad (or mom) watches carefully, and if they go to far, chase them back close to the parents. Such small chicks are an easy prey for scavenger birds.

Revenons à notre surf. Sans manchot c'est pas mal aussi, surtout qu'on commence à avoir des petits passages de soleil qui donnent une lumière intéressante.

Let's get back to our surf. It's quite nice even without penguins, and there is a bit of sun coming out once in a while, giving a very interesting light.

But hey, who are you?

C'est un manchot royal, largement plus gros que les autres (autour de 90cm de haut) et avec des petites décorations jaune sur la tête et le cou. On devrait en voir en abondance plus tard en Géorgie du Sud, mais il y en a quelques uns aussi aux Falklands.

This is a King penguin, much bigger than the other species (about 90cm in height) and with yellow markings on the head and neck. We should see them in abundance later in South Georgia, but a few also come and breed in the Falklands.

D'ailleurs, celui-ci n'est pas tout seul, il a quelques copains : des grands poussins à manteau marron (qui ont près d'un an) et des adultes en train de muer. On reviendra vers eux dans le prochain article.

This one is actually not alone, it has some friends : grown-up chicks from last year with their striking brown coat, and adults in the moulting process. I'll get back to them in the next article.

En attendant, toujours les manchots papous, les rouleaux, les embruns, le soleil... Le bonheur, non?

Meanwhile, more gentoos, surf, spray and sun... Isn't that pure happiness?

Mais tiens, t'es qui toi? (bis) C'est un représentant d'une espèce de canard endémique des Falklands. Il porte en français le joli nom de "Brassemer", parce qu'il avance sur l'eau en "pédalant" vigoureusement avec ses ailes (qui d'ailleurs ne servent qu'à ça, puisque c'est un canard qui ne peut pas voler).

But hey, who are you? (bis). This is a Falklands flightless steamer duck, endemic to the Falklands. They get their name because, well, they can't fly, but they use their wings to "paddle" vigourously on the water, similar to the wheels of a steamer ship.
