Falklands Jour 8 - l'attente

Once again I didn't hear the alarm clock on the phone this morning. I think it's actually not ringing anymore, I'll have to work this out when we get back. The bad news is that I missed the sunrise outing in Gypsy Cove... So I meet my colleagues again at breakfast. The bad news is that the international airport is closed today, so the schedule flight cannot land and is postponed to tomorrow... What? The rumor is that the army (which runs the airport) has exercises planned for today,  which is a bit hard to believe. If they deliberately chose to do military exercises on the one day per week there is a commercial flight, it's rather twisted.

Anyway, this means that we are not going at sea until tomorrow at best, but we will still board the ship which is ready for us, and Ole (the only WildPhoto member present) will try and organise excursions and animations for the few passengers that are already here. In addition to our small group, a few others had opted to visit Falklands on their own prior to the cruise, so there are about 15 passengers now (on 48 expected in total). Meanwhile, I talk a short walk in town, some shopping, a visit to the (wonderful) history museum. The monument in front of the church, a famous local landmark, is made with whale bones (and is called, of course, the Whalebone Arch).

The houses are very british, nicely painted, manucured garden. There is everything you need here, the pub, the local newspaper  (The Penguin News), red phone booth...

The wounds from the 1982 war with Argentina are far from being healed, as you can see on these signs posted on some homes' windows. It remind me of the claims we've seen on the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires a few years back. Still some way to go.

This is all that remains from another shipwreck in the bay (I can't remember the ship's name). On the hills opposite Stanley, there is a memorial made with painted rocks, in hommage to the different Royal Navy ships that were assigned to the protection of the Falklands over the years (HMS Barracouta, Beagle - the one Darwin sailed - Protector, Endurance, Dumbarton Castle, and Clyde).

In the afternoon, we go to the "Fipass" (Falklands Interim Port and Storage System) which is what Stanley uses as a commercial dock. I think it was meant to be temporary, and it still going on. It was built to be utilitarian, some floating metal docks but it's holding on. And here is our home for the next two weeks! Polar Pioneer was built in 1982 as a Finnish research vessel, and then converted to a tourist ship for polar expedition trips. With her ice-strengthened hull she's sturdy, rustic but comfortable, and small-sized, which is a luxury in the expedition trips world. She belongs to a Russian owner (and all the crew is also Russian), leased to Australia-based Aurora Expedition, and WildPhoto Travel has chartered her in full for that trip.

I'm the second person to board the ship and I discover my cabin (#302), double cabin which I will share with a still unknown comrade (she's among the stranded passengers). Decoration is a bit dated, but the cabin is comfortable and large enough, two bunks (with privacy curtains, which will turn out great), a small banket, large wardrobe with a desk behind, and a washbasin (showerrooms and toilet are shared).

One of two dining rooms, with the kitchen in the middle.

The bridge will be open during the trip, but we are not supposed to tell (so you didn't hear it from me) and there will be no photos of the bridge during sailing.

We are docked nearby Akademik Serguei Vavilov, chartered by One Ocean Expedition for  expedition trips in Antarctica (and Arctic, at the other season). They are in the same situation as us, with 3/4 of their passengers supposed to arrive on the delayed plane. So they wait.

An excursion to Kidney Cove is organized for some passengers. As our group (except me) went last night, we return in the evening to Gypsy Cove, which I missed this morning (it's much closer and easier on my foot). A taxi takes us there at 18.00 and picks us back up at 20.00 . With a bit of luck (which we won't have today) you can see Magellanic penguins returning from the sea here.

On the cliffs, there are some night herons nesting.

There is also another of the local cormorant species, the rock shag (or Magellanic cormorant).

The location seems very quiet and peaceful, but here also there are memories of the 1982 war. There are several places on the islands that still harbor active mines. There are regular demining campains, with specialists that come often from war zones in Africa.

Let's breathe a little with this Falkland thrush, and the last rays of sunset.

We will undergo some jet lag in the upcoming days. Officially there is only one hour of time difference between Falklands and South Georgia, but we will create a bigger time difference than this, just to avoid the psychological hurdle of being woken up at 3am for sunrise landings (much better to be woken up at 5am, don't you think?). So we start tonight, by putting our clock forward one hour. At 20.00 local time, it will be 21.00 on the ship, and from now on we will live on the ship's time. Dinner on board tonight is at 22.00 , when everybody is back from excursion, people are friendly, morale is good. I'm off to bed at 23.30, hoping that we will finally depart tomorrow!
