I wake up early to not miss the arrival in South Georgia. I have sharp memories of jagged peaks covered in snow, spectacular glaciers falling into the sea, so at 6 am I'm outside and... Disappointment. The weather is completely foggy, we can guess Willis Islands in the haze, other than that for now I will have to make do with the memories... As a consolation prize we see two humback whales, very close to the ship (I couldn't take pictures).

Breakfast at 7am, the plan for today is still plan A. The wind has stopped, there are nearly no waves now. The morning is not better on the visibility front, and we arrive in Rosita Harbour during lunch so I don't have pictures of the approach. I will update the map (choose the "Géorgie du Sud" layer).

We land using zodiacs, and we are in such low numbers that we can all land at the same time. We each have a landing number, which corresponds to a bicolored wooden token on a board. Before you land, you turn your token to the red side, when you come back on board you turn it back to the green side, so that no one is left behind. The first few landings, there were calls on the intercom to remind some people to turn their token, and then the habit will kick in. Before (and after) each landing we need to carefully clean our boots, tripods, walking sticks, trousers when necessary, so we don't carry on dirt from one landing site to the other. I will show you the zodiac platform later on. For now, first landing at Rosita Harbour, so that we can test the routine. We land on the beach at the left of the picture.

We will land in places with animals (we are here to take photos, after all), which will be more or less happy to see us. To be fair, most of the time they ignore us as long as we leave them alone, with the notable exception of fur seals. And here, there are plenty of fur seals. It's the start of the breeding season, the first ones to arrive are the males full of hormones (especially young ones). They are ready to explain that we are on their territory, by running towards us with a less than friendly attitude. We are told to hold our ground and usually they stop (you can also point a tripod or walking stick to their face, it helps). But I'm not feeling extremely confident when we cross the sandy area (but as you can see from the above picture, I made it!).

I'm actually feeling a bit uneasy during the whole landing, which is a pity after all the waiting time and that long trip. I don't know where to look, I'm a bit worried to step on an unhappy critter, and to make matters worse it starts raining. And I have gear  (for myself and the cameras) against the cold, the wind and the snow, but the rain, it's stupid but I'm not ready. So I have actually taken very few pictures, some fur seals, a nesting petrel... I think I'm not quite sure yet that I'm actually there.

I'm back on board around 14.30 . I'm obviously not the only one who the rain took by surprise! Clothes are hang to dry anywhere possible.

I'm up at the bridge when we leave Rosita Harbour (it's about the only inside spot where you can see outside), and then take a short nap. At 17.00 we have a briefing, revealing plan B for today. We are not going to go to Jason Harbour today, we will arrive late and the weather is not great. So we will just keep on sailing until Gold Harbour, at the opposite end of the main island, so that we will be there in time for a sunrise landing tomorrow from 5.30. So here is tomorrow's plan A.

We have dinner at 18.00. Around 19.30 the sky eventually clears up, with some very nice lights and we can finally enjoy some local scenery!

Then the clouds are back, and the day ends as it has started, with some faint rocks through the fog.

I'm in bed at 22.00. Martin will make an announcement tomorrow at 5.00 to get us ready for the morning landing (and this is when you understand the point of the artificial time difference we have been imposed, so now we don't have to wake up at 2.00, which would be psycholologically challenging).
