Georgie du Sud Jour 4, Gold Harbour (1)

"Hello just a quick announcement to let you know that the sunrise landing this morning is cancelled, there is rain and wind, so you can go back to sleep" (Traduction : bonjour, une petite annonce pour vous dire que le débarquement de ce matin est annulé, il y a du vent et de la pluie, pas de soleil levant, vous pouvez retourner dormir).  Hmm Martin tu veux dire que tu nous réveilles à 5h du matin pour nous dire que tu nous réveilles pour rien? Bon, sur le coup je me rendors sans me faire prier (la déception viendra plus tard, bien réelle). Deuxième réveil à 7h30, cette fois c'est le bon. Petit déjeuner à 8h et on se prépare pour le débarquement du matin à Gold Harbour (voir on a fait du chemin depuis hier!). On a une bien meilleure visibilité, donc voilà un meilleur exemple du paysage de la Géorgie du Sud. C'est assez époustouflant, et démesuré.

So, Martin, you are actually waking us up to tell us we can go back to sleep now? At the time, I don't need to be convinced to continue sleeping (the real disappointment will come later). Second wake-up call at 7.30, this time it's for good. Breakfast at 8.00 and we get ready for a morning landing at Gold Harbour (see the map, we sure have covered some grounds since last night). We have a much better visibility, so here is a better example of a South Georgia's typical scenery. Rather mind-blowing, and everything seems oversized.

On débarque à 9h30, et on peut revenir à bord quand on veut, le dernier zodiac est à 13h30. Ca nous laisse un temps très confortable à terre pour explorer et trouver chacun son coin un peu tranquille. On est moins de 50 passagers, c'est vraiment pour ça que j'ai choisi ce voyage, pas beaucoup de monde et beaucoup de temps à terre. C'est très appréciable. Bon, 50 passagers mais on n'est pas tout seul. Ici au programme surtout des éléphants de mer et une belle colonie de manchots royaux. Voilà à quoi ça ressemble quand on débarque, les éléphants de mer sur la plage, et les manchots un peu en retrait (mais ils vont et viennent constamment entre la colonie et la mer). La densité d'animaux est assez impressionnant (et encore, on n'est pas en pleine saison). Pour l'instant, il ne pleut plus.

We land at 9.30, and we are allowed to go back on board whenever we want, the last zodiac is at 13.30 . So that gives us plenty of time to explore, wander around and find our own private spot. We are less than 50 passengers, one of the reasons I chose this trip, not many people and a lot of time ashore. 50 passengers, but we are not alone. Today we will meet elephant seals and a nice colony of king penguins. This is what it looks like when we land, elephant seals mostly on the beach and the penguins a little further out (but they keep coming and going to and from the sea). The density of animals is impressive (and this is not the heart of the season yet). It has stopped raining, for now.

Je vais commencer par les éléphants de mer dans ce message, on verra plus les manchots dans le suivant. Je vous ai déjà parlé des éléphants de mer aux Falklands, si vous vous souvenez un peu. Ils sont un peu plus cools que les otaries à fourrure, mais il faut se méfier quand même, surtout des gros mâles. Les mâles dominants ("beachmaster") sont d'une taille impressionnante, se déplacent très rapidement et sont très protecteurs de leur harem. Il faut être assez attentif, et ne pas se trouver entre eux et la mer, entre eux et leurs dulcinées, entre eux et un autre mâle.

I will dedicate this message to elephant seals, the penguins will come in the next one. I have talked about elephant seals in the Falkland, if you remember. They are slightly more chilled than the fur seals, but beware anyway, especially watch out for the big males. Dominant males (called beachmasters) are of an impressive size, can travel on land very fast, and are very protective of their harem. So watch out and do not find yourself between one and the sea, between one and his mates, between one and another male.

Les jeunes sont vraiment adorables. Ils ont des grands yeux tout noirs et tout ronds, ils sont curieux et joueurs (et n'ont pas de dents, il me semble). Franchement, vous pouvez résister?

The young ones are the cutest things. They have big round black eyes and are very inquisitive and playful (and don't have teeth, I think, big brownie points for that). Honestly, how can you resist?

Retour vers la plage, avec des mâles endormis, mais vous avez vu cet oeil pas totalement fermé...

Les tous petits bébés sont aussi très mignons. Après ils grandissent à une vitesse phénoménale, mais petit comme ça ils sont encore plus attendrissants.

The very young pups are also very endearing. They grow up incredibly fast, but when they are still this little ball of brown fur you really want to cuddle them.

Ils sont très fragiles aussi dans les premiers jours, et comme vous l'avez déjà compris, on ne peut pas trop se permettre d'être fragile ici. Celui-ci par exemple a perdu sa maman, et il l'appelle d'un ton désespéré, mais comme il s'éloigne de la plage, je pense qu'il s'éloigne d'elle aussi. Un jeune un peu plus âgé lui apporte un peu de réconfort, mais je ne sais pas si ça va suffire. On ne verra pas la résolution avant de repartir, mais je suis un peu inquiète pour lui.

They are very fragile in the first few days, and as you've already understood, you cannot really afford to be fragile here. This one for instance has lost his mum, and is calling rather desperately, but as he is moving away from the beach, he is also probably moving away from her. An older pup tries to bring some moral comfort, but not sure that was enough. We left before this situation was resolved, but I'm quite worried for him.
