Falklands, jour 9, jour 10...

4 novembre, jour 9

I wake up at 8am (ship's time), breakfast and at 10.30 we have an official briefing for an update.  The others are on the plane from Santiago to Punta Arenas, which is a very good start, but the next plane is delayed at least by 3 hours because of the weather. There is indeed a strong Northerly wind today, the sea is angry, and not leaving yesterday was maybe a good option. If we had left, today would be a really unpleasant day. Actually, Hurtigruten's Midnatsol had to turn around after leaving Ushuaia on the way to Antarctica, they didn't want to try out the Drake. Small consolation. And it's raining.

To keep us busy on board, we have two conferences organized today. The first one is by Ole who gives us some "photo tips", illustrated by the photos he took during the last week. When I see the photos he got while he was at the same place and at the same time as me, I can see that I still have a fair margin of progress. And after lunch, one of my swiss companion tells us everything about "the mysteries of Raw" (intriguing, isn't it?). And we can do pretty crazy thing with the photo processing software Lightroom (here again, I have some room to improve). The rain stops, so I get out for a walk on the pontoons and some urbex photos (I cheat, there are also pictures taken yesterday). The small hut was brought in for passport controls of the passengers, when they finally arrive.

We learn in the afternoon that the plane from Punta Arenas arrived almost above the Falklands, and then turned around as it was impossible to land because of the wind... Despair. And we are the lucky ones, we are comfortable and safe, the others have to go back to Chili, enter the country illegally (the immigration officers left the airport when the plane left...) and spend the night in hotels found in a hurry... We dine around 19.00, and put our watch forward another hour.

5 novembre, jour 10...

Allez, on y croit...

OK, we have faith, today is the day. Up at 8 and breakfast at 9 again. In the morning a few of us take a taxi to town to use internet for a bit (you buy prepaid card valid for a few hours, and you can connect to a public access wifi point, mainly at the tourist office and Malvina House). Back to the ship on foot along the sea (about 45 mn). The weather has greatly improved. I spend some times sorting out my photos from the last week. The plane from Punta Arenas has taken off again.

At 16.00 we have the arrival of a lot of luggage, and then a lot of people. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see people I don't know!

We have lost enough time. 17.00 briefing in the bar, we now have our whole expedition team. Martin, our expedition leader, a co-expedition leader imposed by Aurora Expedition (managers of the ship), three photo guides, a wonderful Australian doctor, and S. who takes care of everything the other do not want to (so, she's essential). The passengers are from all around the world, a group from Switzerland with their own photo guide, others from Canada, Russia, Germany, Italy, UK, Australia, India... I'm the only French (good) but some of the Swiss are French-speaking. My cabin mate is also Swiss (but German-speaking), very discreet and quiet, she will be a very nice companion (I hope she thinks the same about me). During the safety briefing we are invited to seat together in the lifeboat, and I really hope we will not have to do that in the Southern Seas for hours or days. At 18.00 we can finally cast off!

Vavilov will follow shortly. We slowly leave Stanley behind.

We get out of the Narrows, which allow shelter in Stanley Bay, and the sea is still agitated outside. At 19.00 we have a welcome cocktail in the bar (where a lot of socializing will happen), 19.30 dinner, and then I feel that the horizontal position will be a lot more convenient.

Bonne nuit!

So let's consider that this is the official end to the Falklands part of the trip (before we come back in two weeks just to take the plane back, if the plane is on time). We will finally, finally start the "South Georgia" part of the trip. Good night!
