Falklands jour 3, sunset on the Neck

[Note : je reprends ce récit de voyage près d'un an après pour cause d'interruptions diverses et variées. J'ai pu oublier quelques détails en route, mais les émotions sont toujours là!]

Après le repas et un peu de repos digestif, je ressors pour profiter des quelques heures jusqu'au coucher du soleil. Pour commencer je retourne vers la colonie de gorfous sauteurs sur la falaise. Juste à côté de la colonie il y a un petit ruisseau où ils aiment bien venir boire et faire des ablutions. Ils ne semblent pas dérangés par ma présence, mais bien sûr je reste à distance et ne rentrent pas dans la colonies. Il y a beaucoup d'interactions entre eux, tendres entre les couples, plus aggressifs d'un couple à l'autre (c'est surtout sonore). J'aime bien leur air perpétuellement en colère avec leurs sourcils froncés.

After the meal, whichever it was, and a little rest, I go out again to enjoy the few hours until sunset. I start by going back to the rockhopper colony on the cliff. Near the colony there is a small creek which the penguins use to drink and shower. They don't seem bothered by my presence, but I stay on the edge of the colony and try to be low and quiet. They have a lot of interactions, caring ones between partners, more aggressive sometimes with others (it's a lot of noise mostly). I like their slanted eyebrows which make them seem angry all the time.

Je retourne ensuite vers les plages du Neck et les colonies de manchots papous, au passage je croise ce caracara austral près de notre habitation. Ces rapaces sont très nombreux ici et une des espèces d'oiseaux qui profitent des oeufs et/ou des animaux affaiblis. Très bel oiseau non?

I then go back towards the Neck and the gentoo penguins colonies, on the way I meet this striated caracara near our house. This bird of prey is abundant here and one of the bird species that preys on eggs and/or weakened animals. Beautiful bird, don't you think?

Les manchots papous sont regroupés en plusieurs colonies chacune d'une bonne centaine d'individus (au moins). Comme il a plu il y a plusieurs mares d'eau douce au milieu des colonies dont ils profitent aussi pour le bain et pour boire, et les photographes profitent des reflets, tout le monde est content.

Gentoo penguins are grouped in several colonies, each with at least a hundred individuals. With this morning's rain, there are several freshwater ponds among the colonies and they use it for drinking and bathing, and the photographers can enjoy the reflections, so everybody is happy.

Je me dirige ensuite vers la plage de l'Est, qui profite directement des lumières du couchant. Comme ce matin, il y a de nombreux manchots qui sortent de l'eau pour regagner la colonie. Le vent est bien tombé, il fait bon. C'est paradisiaque.

I then go towards the Eastern beach, which takes on all the sunset lights. As we saw this afternoon the opposite beach, there are many penguins coming out of the water to get back to the colony. The wind has died down, the air is mild, it's heaven.

Ole nous a bien expliqué qu'il ne faut surtout pas laisser tomber la photo quand le soleil est couché, c'est même là qu'il y a des lumières intéressantes. Il n'a pas tord. Le ciel tout rose se reflètent dans les petites mares et c'est vraiment magnifique.

Ole has explained that you musn't stop photographying when the sun has set, this is actually when you can get the most interesting lights and colors. He's not wrong. The pink sky reflects in the pond's water and it's very special.

Je rentre vers 20h30 et le coucher ne tarde pas (pour personne). Quand je repense à tout ce que j'ai vu pendant cette journée c'est quand même incroyable. Je crois que je tombe sous le charme des Falklands. La liberté dont on peut profiter ici et la proximité avec les animaux a peu d'équivalent ailleurs, et le petit groupe est idéal. Je suis vraiment plus qu'heureuse d'avoir eu l'occasion de faire ce voyage.

I get back around 20.30 and I'm off to bed rather early (everybody is). When I reflect back on everything I've seen during that day it's pretty incredible. I'm falling for Falklands hard. The freedom that you can enjoy here and the proximity to wildlife is unique, and the small group is ideal. I'm more than happy I had the opportunity to do this trip.
