Falklands jour 4,arrivée à Sea Lion Island

Me voilà donc partie en direction de notre prochaine étape, à savoir Sea Lion Island, cette fois tout au sud de l'archipel (voir sur la carte). En essayant d'oublier l'appréhension de l'avion, c'est quand même un chouette voyage. L'avion vole très bas et on profite des paysages, étonnamment variés.

So here I am, on the way to our next destination, which is Sea Lion Island, at the opposite end of the Falkland Islands, on the southernmost part (see the map).  I try to overcome the apprehension of the flight, and I have to say it's a really nice trip. The plane is flying low and I can enjoy the scenery, which is surprisingly diverse.

Je ne pense pas que ça soit de la pollution ici, plutôt des alluvions terrestres ou peut-être des algues. L'eau est transparente et les couleurs magnifiques.

I don't think this is pollution, rather deposits from land or maybe algae bloom. The water is very clear and the colors are amazing.

Nous avons donc une étape intermédiaire dans la petite localité de Fox Bay que j'ai indiquée sur la carte. Il faut vraiment avoir un état d'esprit particulier pour habiter ici à l'année. Les enfants à l'école primaire sont scolarisés par téléphone, et ils vont en pension à Stanley à partir du collège.

We have an intermediate stop in the small settlement in Fox Bay, which I indicated on the map. You need to have a particular mindset to live here all year round. Young children get schooled locally by phone, and they go to boarding school in Stanley when they get older.

Nouveau décollage après dépose de quelques passagers. C'est toujours aussi joli.

We take off again after dropping off some passengers. It's still really nice.

Je pense avoir repéré ici Porpoise Point, à la pointe sud de la grande île de West Island.

It think this is Porpoise Point, at the Southern tip of on of the big island, West Island.

Et voilà Sea Lion Island, c'est tout ce que j'ai pu photographier depuis ma place. Ce  bout-là est un peu plus haut, avec des falaises à pic, on y reviendra dans les jours à venir, l'autre bout est beaucoup plus bas avec de grandes plages.

And here is Sea Lion Island, that's all I could catch from the approach. This end is slightly elevated, with straight cliffs, we'll visit in the upcoming days, the other end is much lower with large beaches. 

Je suis accueillie par Micky qui gère le Sea Lion Lodge. Contrairement à Saunders, ici l'île est une réserve biologique donc sans aucune activité humaine autre que le tourisme et un peu de recherche scientifique (et pas de moutons). L'hébergement est d'un autre standing, c'est un vrai hôtel où on aura chacun notre chambre et où on nous fait les repas (à heure fixe, donc il va falloir négocier un peu pour les diners qui tombent juste au coucher du soleil, impossible!). Après la tasse de thé réglementaire j'ai une petite heure libre avant l'arrivée de mes camarades, je pars donc en exploration. Je ne vais pas très loin, juste la plage pas loin, qui en cette saison est très fréquentée par les éléphants de mer. Je suis à moitié à l'aise, parce qu'ils sont nombreux, donc je ne sais pas trop comment faire les photos, et je ne suis pas bien sûre de leurs réactions, donc je reste un peu en retrait, autant que possible. A cette saison les femelles reviennent à terre pour mettre bas.

I am picked up by Micky, who's in charge of Sea Lion Lodge. Opposite to Saunders, the island here is a biological reserve, there are no human activities other than tourism and some scientific research (and no sheep!). The lodging is also completely different, here it's real hotel where we each will have our room, and meals will be prepared for us (at a fixed time, so we will have to negociate a bit, especially for dinners who fall right during sunset, impossible!). After the statutory cup of tea I have about an hour before my companions arrive, so I go explore. I don't go too far, to the nearest beach, which at this time of year is hosting a large colony of elephant seals. I'm a bit lost, because they are extremely numerous, and I'm not quite sure where to start photographying, and also I'm not sure how they will react and I stay on the edge of the colony. At this season, the female come back to the beach to give birth.

Les mâles sont ces très grosses bêtes (plusieurs mètres de long et je ne vous dit pas le poids) avec la protubérance faciale qui leur vaut leur nom. Il y a une dynamique sociale complexe, avec des mâles dominants qui gèrent leur harem, et des mâles satellites qui voudraient bien monter en grade. Ça génère des bagarres spectaculaires et il faut faire bien attention de ne pas être entre deux mâles ou entre un mâle dominant et son harem (on ne dirait pas comme ça, mais ça peut être très rapide même à terre, et une fois lancés ils ne se préoccupent pas trop de ce qu'il y a sur leur passage, même si c'est leur propre progéniture). Bon par contre là je crois que j'interromps un moment privé, mes excuses (vraiment, éloignez les enfants).

Males are extremely large creatures (several meters long, not to mention the weight) with a funny looking nose that gave the species its name. There is a complex social dynamic, with dominant males (called "beachmasters") looking over their harem, and satellite males who are trying to climb up the social ladder. It generates spectacular fights between males and you should really not find yourself between two angry males, nor between a male and its harem (they don't look like it, but they travel amazingly fast on land, and once they are on the go they don't care much about what's in their way, even if it is their own offsprings). I think I'm interrupting a private moment (once again, keep the children away, really).

Les petits sont très choupinous, de grosses boules noires avec des grands yeux (on en verra plein plus tard en Géorgie du Sud, donc j'y reviendrai). Ils naissent autour de 35kg, et grossissent à une vitesse phénoménale, puisqu'ils peuvent gagner 4 à 5 kg par jour dans leur premier mois.

The pups are extremely cute, big black balls of fur with wide eyes (we will see a lot more in South Georgia, so watch this space). They are born around 35kg and grow up extremely fast, as they can gain 4 to 5 kg each day in their first month. 

Sea Lion Island est renommée aussi pour sa population d'orques, qui est étudiée depuis longtemps par les scientifiques, et j’espérais en apercevoir ici. Et la chance est avec moi puisqu'il y en a une paire qui nage au loin ! Ils ne vont pas se rapprocher plus donc je n'aurais pas de meilleur profil, mais on ne les reverra pas du séjour alors c'est toujours ça. Lors de mes différents séjours en Antarctique et en Norvège je n'en avais encore jamais vu. Pour ceux qui sont sur Facebook vous pouvez suivre les travaux de l'Elephant Seal Research Group qui suit les populations d'éléphants de mer et d'orques d'ici.

Sea Lion Island is also renowned for its orca population, well studied by scientists for a long time, and I was hoping I would spot some here. And luck is on my side, as there are a couple swimming in the background! They will not get closer so I don't have a better picture, but we will not see them again during our stay so I'm already happy with that. In all my stays in Antarctica or Norway I had never managed to see a single one. Those on Facebook can follow the updates of the Elephant Seal Resarch Group, which is studying the elephant seal and orcas populations from here.

Tout le cycle de vie de l'éléphant de mer se joue là, en quelques semaines sur un bout de plage. Pas trop le temps de faire des erreurs ou d'avoir des faiblesses. Il y a tout un écosystème autour qui n'attend que ça, par exemple ces caracaras qui festoient sur le cadavre d'un jeune (je ne veux même pas savoir si il était vraiment mort quand ils ont commencé leur repas - il est mort sans aucun doute à présent). C'est un peu gore, mais c'est intéressant à regarder (et contrairement aux vautours vus précédemment ce sont des oiseaux très photogéniques).

The elephant seal life cycle reaches a very crucial point here, on a small beach over a few weeks. No much time for errors or weaknesses. There is a whole ecosystem around just waiting for this, for instance these caracaras feasting over the cadaver of a pup (I don't even want to know if it was already dead when they started eating - it sure is dead now). It's a bit gorey, but it's also interesting to watch (and these are really photogenic birds).

Mais j'entends arriver l'avion qui amène mes camarades, donc je retourne au lodge les accueillir. Le temps qu'ils s'installe, puis qu'on reprenne le thé, et on ressort vers 16h45 guidés par Ole qui va encore nous montrer les endroits les plus intéressants. Il pleut légèrement. Comme je l'ai dit ce bout de l'île est relativement bas et plat. Juste à la sortie du lodge on trouve de nombreuses colonies de manchots papous. Ils vont et viennent toute la journée entre la colonie et la mer, mais particulièrement le matin et le soir, donc bon plan pour les photos avec la belle lumière. Surtout que c'est bien fait, parce qu'il y a une plage de chaque côté donc autant de lumières différentes.

But I hear the plane coming, so I go back to the lodge to be reunited with my comrades. They settle, and we have tea again, and we go out around 16h45 under Ole's guidance to take us on a quick discovery tour. It's raining (not much). As I say, this part of the island is low and flat. Just outside the lodge there are many gentoo penguins colonies. They go back and forth all day between the colony and the sea, mainly in the morning and evening, so good opportunities for pictures with nice lights. And there is a beach on each side, so many different light possibility.

Entre les deux plages il y a un espace un peu marécageux avec des pièces d'eaux plus ou moins grandes. La végétation est principalement du "tussac grass", une plante vraiment typiques des iles du sud atlantique, et qui fait comme des petits fourrés d'environ un mètre de haut. Les éléphants de mer s'y dissimulent volontiers pour se reposer, et le marcheur inattentif peut facilement confondre un éléphant de mer endormi avec un rocher. Il est donc conseillé au marcheur de ne pas être inattentif.

Between both beaches there is a sort of wetland area with ponds of different sizes (including a very large one). The vegetation is mostly tussac grass, a very typical plant of the South-Atlantic islands, which grows in shrubs of about a meter high. Sea elephants will enter the tussac grass to have a rest, and to the distracted hiker a resting elephant seal can look very much like a rock. The hiker is thus advised to not be distracted.

Il y a beaucoup d'oiseaux sur Sea Lion Island, en particulier plusieurs espèces d'Anatidés (famille des oies et canards). Ici il me semble que ce sont des "yellow bill pintail" (canard à queue pointue en français peut-être?).

There are a lot of bird species on Sea Lion Island, for instance many species of the duck/gees family. Here I think these are yellow bill pintails.

Et beaucoup de couples d'oies de Magellan, qu'on a déjà vu à Saunders, ici Monsieur en blanc et Madame en brun.

And many couples of upland geese, which we already saw on Saunders, here is Mr wearing white and Mrs wearing brown.

Bon on sent vraiment que c'est le printemps... (éloignez les enfants, ter).

Le soleil revient, et donc pluie + soleil ça donne un bel arc-en-ciel sur manchot, goélands et éléphants de mer... Nous voilà encore dans un endroit magnifique et riche!

The sun is back, so rain + sun means we are gifted with a beautiful rainbow, over penguin, seagulls and sea elephant... We are once again in a rich and amazing location.

Pour ce soir on va être poli et prendre le repas à l'heure réglementaire, avec les quelques autres occupants du lodge (on doit être une douzaine en tout, on ne va pas trop se marcher sur les pieds quand même). On est bien nourri. Je suis un peu fatiguée par le lever matinal et toutes ces émotions, donc je vais allez me coucher tôt - je ne suis pas la seule je crois - et on va essayer de se lever tôt.

Tonight we will behave and go to dinner at the required time, with the other lodge's clients (we are maybe twelve altogether, so it's not going to be too crowded). We are very well fed. Early morning rise and a rich day means I'm a bit tired, so I go to bed early - I don't think I'm the only one - and we'll try to get up early tomorrow.
