Falklands Jour 6 (1), Sea Lion Island, premières lumières

Ce matin mon réveil a sonné (à 4h30) et je l'ai entendu! Joie, d'autant plus que la lumière ce matin est vraiment spectaculaire. Je vais vers la grande mare entre la manchotière et la mer dans l'espoir de voir des manchots, et je ne suis pas déçue (j'ai pris peu de risque). Il y a une légère brume sur l'eau et l'ambiance est vraiment spéciale. Je suis quasiment seule (je vois parfois un de mes collègues au loin) avec quelques centaines (milliers?) de manchots et quelques dizaines (centaines?) d'éléphants de mer. Ca fait drôle, mais c'est assez plaisant.

This morning, my alarm did ring (at 4.30) and I heard it! Yay! And so glad I did, because the light this morning is spectacular. I go towards the big pond between the penguin colony and the sea, in the hope to see penguins on the move, and I am not disappointed (to be honest, the risk was low). There is some mist on the water and a very special atmosphere. I am almost alone (just a glimpse of another colleague every now and then) with some hundreds (thousands?) of penguins and dozens (hundreds?) of elephant seals. It's a weird feeling, but quite pleasing.

Après le contre-jour au couchant, je pratique le contre-jour au levant, et les reflets. C'est vraiment magnifique. J'ai toujours la sensation d'avoir une chance énorme de pouvoir être dans un endroit pareil (il y a même des moments où je me demande si je suis bien réellement là).

After evening backlit, I now practice morning backlit (and reflections). It's so beautiful. I still feel incredibly privileged to be in such an amazing place (there are even times when I'm not completely sure I'm really here).

Le lever de soleil est vraiment somptueux. C'est très calme, très doux.

The sunrise is beautiful. It's very quiet, very soft.

Changeons un peu des manchots, voilà les éléphants de mer (plutôt les jeunes) qui jouent dans l'eau (puis oies et canards).

As a distraction from the penguins, here are the elephant seals (mostly young ones) playing in the water (and then geese and ducks).

Retour aux manchots. C'est l'heure où ils partent à la pêche et cet endroit au bord de la mer est très stratégique car ils vont forcément passer près de moi. Bien sûr je ne me place pas directement sur leur route pour ne pas les gêner ou leur faire peur. Ils commencent par descendre de la zone de la manchotière...

Back to the penguins. At that time, they go out to sea for fishing, and I am in a strategic place because they have to go near me to get to the sea. I try to stay on the side, not directly on their route so as not to frightened them or bother them. They start by walking down from the colony area...

...puis font le tour de la mare pour rejoindre la petite dune qui surplombe la plage.

Ils arrivent en général en petit groupe de 15-20 individus, puis il y a une pause, puis un nouveau groupe.

La plupart des groupes font le tour de la mare car je crois qu'ils se méfient des éléphants de mer (je ne peux pas leur reprocher), mais de temps en temps il y a un groupe plus hardi que les autres. Le plus courageux (ou le plus inconscient?) avance au bord de l'eau pendant que les autres regardent si il s'en sort...

As I said, most of the groups go around the pond, I think they are a bit afraid of the elephant seals (I can relate), but from time to time there is a group braver than the other. The bravest (or most oblivious) gets near the water, as the other remains behind and see how he fares...

... et puis ils y vont à la queue-leu-leu, et à vitesse soutenue.

... then they all go in, in a single line and in a hurry.

Parfois ils s'arrêtent inquiets au milieu de la mare, et parfois même ils font demi-tour.

Sometimes they stop in the middle of the pond, a bit worried, and sometimes they even turn around.

Petite pause à l'abri d'un fourré qui cache un éléphant de mer, j'y va t'y j'y va t'y pas...

J'y va! A ce stade on ne réfléchit plus, on fonce.
