Last photos of the morning, and there are not only gentoo penguins here. Caracaras are always on the lookout for ill or weak animals, here they have found what I think is an upland goose (male), at least as big as they are. So they are feasting in groups, and fights ensue.

There are also some live geese, thankfully, and even the cutest fluffy chicks!

Also many small birds, which are rather easy to see as soon as you stop and wait for a bit. Here I think a yellow-bridled finch.

A bit of a cheat, this is also a penguin, but a Magellanic one, at the entrance of its burrow.

This was sure a busy and fulfilling morning, and I get back for breakfast. And afterwards there are several hours when I'm not sure what I have done. On my notebook I wrote that the others went back to the rockhopper rookery, not sure why I didn't go (maybe my foot hurt), and I don't have pictures until the middle of the afternoon. I probably took some rest... As I get back to this trip report,  one and a half year later, I figure that I may have "lost" some hours that I could have used walking around (even if it's not the best hours for photography). But, a year and a half later, I have so many incredible images in my head of that day, that morning and that evening (you'll see) and I don't feel I have wasted my time... There has been some very rich and intense hours, maybe it's good to take a pause to enjoy them (can you get overwhelmed by too much beauty?).

So, well, back out in the middle of the afternoon, I get back to the same pound, to meet again with the gentoos on their way back from the sea (background) to their rookery. They cross the pond in the other direction, there are less seals, and they are braver (or in a hurry)!

I go to the beach to catch them as they come out of the waves. The beach is large and they arrive one by one, so you need a bit of patience to have one coming out not too far from where you are.

Also many elephant seals on the beach, young ones...

And bigger ones (I stay at a respectful distance).

Everybody is amicably sharing the sand.

The sun is going down and the light is getting warm and golden, and there is good hope for a sunset on par with the sunrise. I meet Ole on the beach and ask him if I can walk along with him (I'm curious to see how he works), which he very kindly agrees on. So I will have a few hours of private masterclass! It's one of the privilege of the trip and the very small group.
