Georgie du Sud Jour 5, Ocean Harbour (1)

Martin nous réveille encore à 5h du matin pour nous dire qu'on peut se rendormir car le débarquement pré-soleil est annulé (pour cause que y'en a pas, de soleil, et qu'il neige). Bon, ça serait bien quand même que ça ne devienne pas une habitude... Vrai lever à 7h30, petit déjeuner à 8h, débarquement à 9h, on commence à être rodé. Ce matin on est à Ocean Harbour (voir la carte), un endroit très joli (il y a peu d'endroits pas jolis dans le coin) et qui me plait particulièrement car on y trouve des restes de l'exploitation baleinière et en particulier l'épave du Bayard. On a droit à un tour en zodiac autour de l'épave, je suis dans le premier.

Martin wakes us up again at 5.00 to let us know that we can go back to sleep, as the sunrise landing is cancelled (because there is no sun, and plenty of snow falling). OK, it would be nice if this didn't turn into a bad habit... As yesterday, second wake-up call at 7.30, breakfast at 8.00 and landing at 9.00, we are getting very well organized. This morning we are in Ocean Harbour (see the map), a very beautiful location (there are very few not beautiful locations in the area), and which I find really interesting because there are some remnants from the whaling era, and especially the wreck of the Bayard. We are offered a zodiac tour around the wreck, I manage to catch the first one.

Trois-mats anglais construit en 1864, le Bayard a une première vie comme bateau de transport commercial autour du monde, et une deuxième vie ici, comme bateau de transport de charbon pour la station baleinière située ici, au début du XXème siècle, quand la Géorgie du Sud a été la base mondiale de l'industrie baleinière (pas son époque la plus glorieuse). En 1911 le bateau arrache son mouillage lors d'une tempête et s'échoue sur les rochers, à l'endroit où il est encore aujourd'hui. L'épave sert maintenant de zone de nidification pour certains oiseaux, en particulier de nombreux cormorans impériaux.

The Bayard is a three-masted English ship built in 1864. She has a first life as a trading ship, and a second life here, to transport coal for the local whaling station located here at the start of the 20th century, when South Georgia was the world capital of the whaling industry (not its most shining moment). In 1911 the ship breaks her mooring during a storm, and end up stuck on the rocks, where she still is today. She is now a nesting platform for birds, especially these imperial shags.

Je pense que je dois être une des rares à être autant intéressée (voire plus) par le bateau que par les oiseau. Du cooup je vous fait un petit mix des deux. Oui, il neige toujours doucement, et il ne fait pas chaud.

I must be one of the very few to be as interested (maybe more) in the ship than in the birds. So I show you a bit of both. Yes, it's still snowing a bit, and the air is cold.

Il y a quelques grosses bêtes aussi, nos copain otaries à fourrure et éléphant de mer... Il a l'air tout cool comme ça celui-là mais il faut toujours se méfier. Lui (ou un collègue) va un peu plus tard mordre tellement fort le boudin d'un zodiac qu'il va réussir à le percer! (pas de blessé à part le zodiac)

There are also some bigger critters, our fur seal and elephant seal friends.. This one looks really relaxed but you need to be aware all the time. Later on, him (or a colleague) will stick his teeth in a zodiac so hard that he will manage to puncture it! (no casualties apart from the zodiac).

On débarque ensuite sur la plage, mais la balade à pied sera pour le prochain message!
