Autour de Tromsø, et les lumières furent!

Pour les 3 nuits où je reste à Tromsø, j'ai réservé une chasse aux aurores boréales avec la compagnie Wandering Owl (choisie un peu au hasard parmi les plus de 100 qui sont sur le créneau, quand même, je voulais surtout un petit groupe). Comme on ne sait jamais ni quelles vont être les conditions météo, ni jusqu'où il faudra aller pour trouver un ciel clair, j'ai préféré confier la conduite et la météorologie à quelqu'un d'autre. Ce soir, après de savantes études des couvertures nuageuses complétées certainement de son expérience, le guide nous emmène vers le nord, en restant près de la côte, sur l'ile de Ringvassøya, environ 65 km de Tromsø.

Il n'y aura pas trop de suspens, parce que dès qu'on descend du minibus, on voit que le ciel en effet est clair, et qu'il y a déjà de l'activité! Donc pendant que les autres personnes s'équipent pour le froid (je suis venue avec mon équipement), je pose le trépied sur le bord de la route et c'est parti. Waouh!

For the next 3 nights, I have booked an Aurora chase tour with the company Wandering Owl (which I picked a bit at random among the hundred or so companies in Tromsø, I mostly wanted a small group). As you never know what the cloud cover will be, and which distance you will have to drive to find a clear sky, I'm more comfortable delegating the driving to someone else. Tonight, after a close study of the cloud maps, completed by their own experience, the guides take us North along the coast, on the island of Ringvassøya, about 65km from the city. 

The suspens is short-lived, because as soon as we get out of the minibus, the sky is indeed clear, well done, and activity has already started. So while other people are getting equiped for the cold (I came with my own equipement), I unfold the tripod on the side of the road and start watching and taking pictures. Wow!

Ca c'est de l'autre côté, où il y a aussi quelques traces mais très faible, donc je fais des expériences de pose longue, et je trouve qu'on dirait un peu un arc-en-ciel nocturne...

This is on the other side, where there are some very faint lights, so I experiment with long pose, and it comes out as a nocturnal rainbow.

Puis on descend au bord de la plage et on fait un feu, et on a droit à une super bonne soupe et des boissons chaudes et des petits gâteaux pendant toute la soirée, on est bien chouchouté. Je m'éloigne assez vite du feu cependant car la lumière dans les yeux gêne pour la vision nocturne, et là la vision nocturne elle est assez vite sollicitée de partout.

We proceed down to the beach and we make a fire, and we are offered a delicious warm soup, hot drinks and cookies the whole evening long, we are very pampered. I walk away from the fire rapidly however, because the light in the eye is not helping with nigh vision, and you really need your night vision tonight.

Le feu, même tout petit et loin, éclaire la plage et ça ressort rouge avec les poses de plusieurs secondes, mais finalement j'aime  bien. On a droit à une belle période d'activité, assez longue. Je profite à fond du fait d'être sur la terre ferme, ça facilite quand même la photographie.

The fire, even small and far away, lights up the beach and gives red hues in the seconds-long pose, but actually I don't mind. We have a long period of Aurora activity. I enjoy very much being on solid ground, it does help with photography.

Puis ça retombe un peu, je repars dans mes expérimentations de pose longue (20s ici), qui permettent de voir qu'il y a toujours un fond de vert (qu'on voit vraiment à peine à l’œil nu), et aussi que les nuages sont en train d'arriver, ouste!

And it fades out, so I'm back to experimenting with very long poses (20s here), which brings out the very faint green tint of the sky (which you almost don't see with the naked eyes), and aslo the incoming clouds, go away!

Surtout que derrière les nuages, ça repart! Finalement, bien obligeamment les voiles dansants se déplacent à côté des nuages et on a un deuxième show, encore très joli puis qui retombe. Ça n'est pas l'aurore boréale du siècle avec explosion dans tous les sens, ça bouge assez lentement, mais bon sang que c'est beau. 

We can see that it's starting again behind the clouds! In the end, the lights move nicely to the side of the clouds and we have a good second show. It's not the Aurora of the century, but so far it's the Aurora of my trip, and it's so beautiful. 

Et puis ça repart à l'opposé, là où il y avait notre arc-en-ciel tout à l'heure, et là ça bouge vite et c'est bien intense et ça dure!

And then the activity moves to behind me, where our rainbow was at the start of the evening, and now it's moving fast and bright and lasts for a while.

Et puis revoilà les nuages, et puis il est tard (minuit passé, avec tout ça) et puis il y a des gens qui ont froid, donc retour maison.

And the clouds come in again, and it's late (way past midnight) and some people are cold, so we decide to head back home.

Et bien sûr juste sur le parking alors qu'on a ramassé tout le matériel et qu'on s'apprête à remonter dans le minibus, on a la plus belle aurore de la soirée, juste quelques minutes, mais à travers tout le ciel, qui bouge partout et tout. Wow wow wow. Mission accomplie. Je suis super contente. Vous me mettrez deux autres soirs comme ça s'il vous plait?

And as we are getting into the minibus, with all the photo gear tucked in, we have the most beautiful Lights of the evening, just a few minutes but throughout all the sky, moving fast. Wow wow wow. Mission accomplished, and I'm very happy. Can we please have another night like this?

Au fait, pour les amateurs de carte comme moi, on était par là (repère rouge), Tromsø est en bas au milieu, le centre ville est sur la petite île et on est parti en gros sous le "m" de "Tromsø".

Tonight we were here, under the red marke. Tromsø is at the bottom, middle of the map, the city center is on the small island and we roughly left from under the "m" of "Tromsø".
