Dernier jour à Tromsø

Je dois remonter à bord du MS Lofoten quand il va repasser en direction du sud, mais comme il n'arrive que vers minuit, j'ai encore toute une journée à occuper à Tromsø. Une bonne partie est occupée à dormir, parce que ces nuits raccourcies commencent à peser (mais sans regret aucun), mais comme il fait toujours très beau, il faut bien sortir un peu, et je monte au sommet du téléphérique de Fjellheisen pour voir le coucher du soleil. Il se couche vers 15h30 ici, je prends le téléphérique de 14h.

I'm boarding MS Lofoten again on her Southbound trip, but she will arrive only around midnight tonight, so I still have a full day in Tromsø. A good part of it is spent resting, because all these shortened nights are starting to weigh seriously on me (but no regrets whatsoever). But as the weather is still very nice, it would be a shame not to enjoy it, so I take the Fjellheisen cable car to enjoy the sunset from the top. Sunset is around 3.30 pm here, I go on the 2pm cable car up.

La vue sur la ville et les montagnes alentour est vraiment spectaculaire, et je suis juste à temps pour voir arriver le bateau Hurtigruten (qui va vers le nord celui-là, c'est le MS Nordkapp).

The view over the city and the mountains around is really spectacular, and I'm just in time for the arrival in port of the Northbound Hurtigruten (MS Nordkapp today). 

Je sors de la petite maison du téléphérique pour aller me promener à pied. Il y a beaucoup moins de neige que l'an dernier (mais c'était plus tard dans la saison).

I get off the small chalet at the top for a walk on the mountain. There is a lot less snow than last year (but it was later in the season).

Aux alentours, ce n'est pas une montagne de neige, c'est une montagne de glace. En gros cet hiver il a neigé (mais pas beaucoup), puis il a fait chaud et il a plu, donc ça a commencé à fondre, puis il a regelé. Donc pour la balade, c'est sur une immense patinoire. Petits crampons sous les chaussures fortement conseillés. Avec les crampons, c'est vraiment très chouette, et j'en profite jusqu'à ce que le soleil soit bien couché, avec l'arrivée des très jolies lumières bleues et roses sur les montagnes. C'est magnifique.

It's actually not a mountain of snow, but a mountain of ice. This winter it has snowed a little (not much), then it warmed up and there was some rain (so the snow melted in parts), and then it froze over. So the walk is on an ice-skating ring. Ice grips under the shoes are strongly advised. With the crampons, it's really nice, and I enjoy it until the sun has disappeared behind the mountains and there are blue and pink lights all over. It's magnificent. 

Ensuite, il n'y a plus qu'à attendre... Une fois la nuit tombée, je jette quand même un coup d'oeil régulièrement à la camera "all sky" de l'Insitut de Recherche Polaire Norvégien, en me disant que si il y a une activité solaire forte je tenterai peut-être ma chance pour des photos urbaines d'aurores boréales. Et chance, un peu après 20h ça semble s'agiter assez fortement, donc je cours vers le port avec le matériel.

C'est compliqué de voir quelque chose avec toutes les lumières parasites, mais je vois quand même les mouvements dans le ciel, et donc je tente les photos. C'est très différent des photos dans la nature et j'ai dû pas mal bosser dessus, mais ça rend plutôt pas mal!

And then, I have to wait... Once the night has fallen, I regularly check the All-sky camera from the Norwegian Polar Research Institute. If there is signs of a strong activity, I might have a go at urban Northern Lights pictures. And I'm lucky that shortly after 8pm there are signs of activity, so I gather all my gear and run towards the harbor.

It's difficult to see anything with all the lights, but I can see some movement in the sky so I try some pictures. It's very different than taking pictures in the wilderness, and I had to do quite a bit of post-production work on them, but I'm rather happy with the results!

Au début je suis sur le quai de l'Hurtigruten, mais il est illuminé comme en plein jour et c'est vraiment gênant, donc je me déplace le long du quai en m'arrêtant tous les 50m pour reprendre des photos un peu à l'arrache, car j'ai peur que ça s'arrête, mais heureusement ça continue.

I was first on the Hurtigruten dock, but it's very brightly lit and it's really a bother, so I walk along the quay, stopping every 50m to steal some pictures, because you never know when it's going to stop, but luckily it keeps on going. 

Sur les photos suivante, je vais être honnête, à l’œil nu je ne vois quasiment plus rien. C'est quand même dommage qu'on n'ait pas eu ça hier soir quand on était dans la montagne, parce que je pense qu'en dehors des lumières de la ville, ça doit être vraiment spectaculaire. Mais je suis contente des photos, et super heureuse d'avoir eu les lumières pour la 4ème nuit de suite! Quelle chance!

To be honest, on the pictures below I see barely nothing with the naked eye. Too bad we didn't have this yesterday when we were in the mountain, because I think it must be quite a spectacular show away from the light pollution. But I'm happy with the pictures, and feel really lucky to have seen the Northern Lights 4 nights in a row. That is more than I could hope for. 

En continuant à me déplacer je finis par trouver un cadrage dont je suis assez contente (la cathédrale, le pont, les petits bateaux pas trop moche, et plein de ciel), mais c'est à ce moment là que ça s'arrête. Je reste un peu pour voir si ça va repartir, mais il ne se passe plus grand chose. Donc je rentre au chaud, je continuerai à regarder la camera All Sky, et si il se repasse quelque chose, je ressors. Mais c'est fini pour la nuit.

I keep on moving and I finally find a landscape composition I'm rather happy with (the cathedral, the bridge, rather nice boats, a mountain and plenty of sky), and it's then that the activity finally stops. I stay for a bit in the hope that it will pick up again, but not much is happening. So I get back to warm up, still having a look at the all-sky camera, but it seems to be over for the night.

  
Embarquement à minuit. Cette fois j'ai la cabine que j'ai réservé, au pont le plus bas sans fenêtre et sans salle de bain, on ne peut pas gagner à tous les coups! On y dort bien, par contre. Au revoir Tromsø! Merci beaucoup, à la prochaine!

The ship is here on time and I board at midnight. No surprises this time with the cabin, I have the one I booked, lowest deck, no window, shared facilities, you can't win them all! It's very quiet though and I sleep alright. Goodbye Tromsø, thank you very much, see you next time!
