Oslo-Bergen, train, soleil

Direction Bergen aujourd'hui, par le train. C'est un trajet qu'on a déjà fait plusieurs fois, je n'en suis pas encore lassée. La plus grosse incertitude c'est la météo, et aujourd'hui coup de bol, il fait très beau. Jolies lumières du levant alors qu'on quitte Oslo et sa banlieue. Le train au départ est quasiment vide, et je peux donc assez facilement me balader d'un côté à l'autre.

Today I'm going to Bergen, by train. We have done this particulair train ride several times and I still think it's worth it. The main concern is the weather, and I'm very lucky today. Nice morning lights as we leave Oslo's outskirts. The train is nearly empty at first, and I can easily move from one side to the other.

Et puis on commence doucement à monter en altitude, les températures baissent, et on arrive dans ma partie préférée, sur le plateau entre Geilo et Finse, avec moins d'arbres, des petites maisons perdues sous la neige... Jusqu'ici c'était beau, mais là c'est incroyablement beau! Il est midi et la lumière est dure, mais en cette saison le train suivant arrive là de nuit, donc il n'y a pas trop de choix. Le train se remplit d'un coup, on est dimanche, les gens qui sont venus passer un week-end au ski rentrent chez eux. Je me retrouve assise à côté d'un monsieur qui justement rentre d'un week-end ski entre copains. Il me dit que ce sont les conditions idéales pour le ski (de fond, ici) : grand froid sec (-22°C à Finse, point le plus haut), soleil, bonne neige, pas de vent. En plus, c'est beau (je l'ai déjà dit?). 

And the we start going up, temperatures drop down, and we arrive in my favorite part, on the mountain plateau between Geilo and Finse. Less trees, more snow, small colorful houses looking very lost in all the white... It was beautiful up to then, but now it's incredibly beautiful! It's midday and the light is harsh, but at this season the next train arrives here at night, so there is not much choice. The train suddenly fill up, today is Sunday and people are getting back from their skying week-end. My new neighbour tells me that it's ideal weather for cross-country skiing : nice cold dry weather (-22°C in Finse...), sun, good snow,no wind. And besides, it's beautiful (I think I've already mentioned it). 

Puis on commence la redescente, il y a beaucoup de tunnels et pare-avalanches mais entre deux la vue n'est toujours pas si mal. On retrouve les grands arbres,  on perd la neige.

And we go down again. There are a lot more tunnels and anti-avalanche walls, but in between the view is still rather quite nice. Big trees are returning while snow is receding. 

Arrivée à Bergen toujours avec le soleil, incroyable dans cette ville qui a la réputation d'être la plus humide de Norvège avec 300 jours de pluie par an. Je n'avais pas prévu grand chose à l'arrivée à Bergen mais je ne peux pas laisser passer ce beau temps, donc direction le funiculaire de Fløibanen. Il fait 0°C ici, la canicule presque! Au passage j'admire les instructions de sécurité sur les portes des containers-congélateurs qui servent au marché aux poissons. Je me demande toujours quel incident a bien pu générer le besoin pour un avertissement pareil. On pourrait imaginer un roman policier sur le port de Bergen avec découverte du cadavre dans un container frigorifique...

We arrive in Bergen still under beautiful weather, this is definitely not text-book Bergen weather (it is supposed to rain 300 days a year!). I had no real plan for the rest of the afternoon, but I can't pass up on this weather, so I go to the Fløibanen cable car. O°C here, a heatwave almost! On the way I look quizzically at the security warning on the doors of the ice containers for the fish market. What kind of incident made this warning necessary?

Il y a du monde au funiculaire , en particulier des gens avec des skis encore (il n'y a pas de neige en bas, mais il y en a en haut). La visibilité est vraiment superbe et j'ai bien fait de monter. Le MS Kong Harald est à quai. Il y a un bar-restaurant idéalement placé pour profiter des rayons du soleil jusqu'au dernier moment. Je m'offre un chocolat chaud (avec crème chantilly maison!) et je m'installe aussi en attendant que le soleil descende. Quand même, quand même, c'est pas mal. Pas mal du tout.

There is quite a lot of people at the cable car, including people with skis. There is no snow down there, but there is snow at the top. The visibility is great, that was a good idea to come up here. MS Kong Harald is at the Hurtigruten dock waiting for departure. There is a bar ideally located to enjoy the last rays of the setting sun. I treat myself to a hot chocolate (with home-made chantilly cream!), and I sit among the other watching the sun go down. I have to say, this is really nice.
