Oslo

For this trip I have tried to make a relaxed schedule, and I'm staying in Oslo today. I was picturing sort of a cocooning/resting day, but the weather is glorious this morning and it would be a shame not to enjoy it. Still -7°C, a bit brisk but fine (wool underwear indeed are a good idea though). Some sidewalks are heated and so fine to walk on, everywhere else is pure ice (with some pebbles thrown on it sometimes), such as the pathways of Frogner Park.

I think we have visited this park on every trip to Oslo, and I'm still not tired of Vigeland's sculptures. I know they are not everyone's cup of tea but I'm very drawn to them. I find them full of strength and tenderness and violence and love. They are terribly human. And I also like to watch other people interacting with them.

After a small nap at the hotel, I try to go watch the sunset near the harbor and the Akershus fortress, which I still haven't visited after all this time. Unfortunately clouds are coming in, so a very subdued sunset, and I still won't visit the fortress, I can't find the entrance (I finally came upon it by chance much later, too late, and not at all in the area I was looking).

Bon.

I walk back from the harbour along the new walk along the water. It has some signeage (sometimes misleading) and informations signs every now and then.  A very nice walk. There are some areas for artistic displays, such as those mural paintings, or these funny triangular-shaped constructions. It is called "Salt" and claims to be a "nomadic art installation" (not quite sure whether it's the art or the installation which is nomadic). Contrarily to what you can think, it is neither a reference to the Vikings, nor to the cod drying racks in Lofoten, but is is an homage to the Global Seed Vault in Svalbard. If you say so.

On the walk's map, they say that the area around the Opera is a zone in constant evolution. Translation : it's an ongoing construction site, and I rarely saw such a congregation of building cranes. At the left of the Opera is the building site of a future huge library, which came out of the ground since last year. Unfortunately it blocks off the great view on the Opera and the fjord from the Thon Hotel Opera breakfast room... Hopefully at least the building will be nice when it's done.

Young start-uppers have created a small floating sauna next to the quay, and of course the experience would not be complete without a jump in freezing water. Given that this is about 200m from the quay where the huge ferries to Copenhagen dock, I'm not so sure about the purity of the experience, but customers seem to enjoy it. I thought the Opera roof would be closed because of the ice, but it seems possible to climb using the side stairs. As it is actually starting to snow (the weather changes very quickly here), I think I will rather go back to the hotel!
