I had a trip planned in the far South in December 2016, but fate had other plans, and this trip couldn't happen. With the advance payment that I got back, I tried in April 2017 a solo trip and a new company, WildPhoto Travel (which organizes trips for photographers in small groups). It was a more than positive experience, and I learnt that they were organizing a trip focused on South Georgia : 2 weeks on board Polar Pioneer, including journey from and to the Falklands, with about 50 passengers. This seemed like the perfect occasion to go back, in a different way. And while I'm travelling so far away, I also chose the pre-cruise week in Falklands, with the same company, but even smaller group (5 + a photo guide, and land-based). When I say "so far away", it's here, between South America and Antarctic Peninsula, Roaring Forties and Howling Fifties...

Reaching the Falklands is an expedition in itself. There is one flight per week, from Santiago de Chile, and that's it. So you (and your luggage) are better not missing it, and I chose to arrive in Santiago with two nights to spare, just in case. Not much to say there, it was not the goal of the trip and I did not explore. I caught up on my sleep (and tried to store some in advance), tried to get over the 4 hours jet-lag (I've done worse), finished the last bit of work stuff before possibly being off the grid for 3 weeks, nothing exciting.

I meet my travel companions at the airport at the crack of dawn this Saturday. There is Ole, our guide, Norwegian professional photographer, a British lady, three Swiss, and me. The flight leaves around 6am, with a stop-over in Punta Arenas. First hurdle, get the (heavy) photo bags through as hand luggage, check. I was advised by a Chilean lady to sit on the left of the plane for the best view over the Andes. I couldn't choose my seat, but luck is with me today and I gave a good seat. The weather in clear (in places at least), and indeed the view is worth it! As we leave Santiago...

Pics enneigés et lacs bleu fluo...
Snowy peaks and fluorescent lakes...

Des glaciers immenses...
Huge glaciers...

And the relief gets more subdued as we arrive in Punta Arenas.

The schedule of this flight is often uncertain, as it depends on Falklands' temperamental weather (and consequent temperamental mood of the military running the airport...), so leaving Punta Arenas with only 2 hours of delay is actually good news. We arrive without issue in Mount Pleasant... Now, the real adventure begins.

I love photos of mountains from planes, Merci.
