Georgie du Sud Jour 6, Grytviken

Nous n'avons pas le plaisir de la voix de Martin nous annonçant qu'il est 5h du matin cette fois-ci, le réveil est à 8h15 pour un petit-déjeuner à 9h. On est arrivé à Grytviken, pour changer il fait gris et il neige un peu. Ambiance très différente de ma précédente visite en decembre 2013. Grytviken est une ancienne station baleinière où les bâtiments ont été sauvegardés et sécurisés pour permettre aux visiteurs de s'y promener. Il y a également un superbe musée et sa petite boutique (très bien achalandée). A l'entrée de la baie, à King Edward Point, on y trouve les quelques personnes dépositaires de l'autorité locale (sous la houlette du gouverneur des Falklands et de la couronne britannique). Il faut surtout gérer les licences de pêche, et la préservation de l’environnement. Il y a aussi une petite station de recherche. Il n'y a du monde que l'été ici.

We don't have the pleasure of Martin's voice announcing that it's 5am today, the wake-up call is at 8.15 and breakfast is on at 9. We are moored in Grytviken, and once again the weather is grey and it's snowing on and off. Very different atmosphere to my previous visit in December 2013.  Grytviken is a former whaling station, and the buildings have been preserved and made safe for visitors. There is also a wonderful museum and a small (but very-well stocked) shop. At the bay's entrance, on King Edward Point, you find the local authorities (under the responsibility of the Governor of the Falklands, and ultimatelythe British crown). They mostly have in charge the fisheries policy, and environmental watch. There is also a small research station. People only live here in summer.

Les officiels montent à bord à 10h (heure du bateau, donc 7h locales) et passent un long moment avec le capitaine et l'équipe d'expédition pour vérifier qu'on prend bien les précautions adéquates. On doit avoir une bonne note car à 10h30 on est officiellement autorisé à débarquer (sinon, c'était direct route retour). Je m'attends à ce qu'on fouille mes poches et qu'on observe mes semelles, mais en ce qui me concerne au final je ne vois personne qui me surveille, ni à bord ni à terre...

The authorities get on board at 10 (ship's time, so that's 7 local time) and spend a long time with the captain and the expedition team to make sure we are taking the appropriate precautions. We must be doing a good job, as we are allowed to land at 10.30 (if they hadn't been happy, that would have been the end of the trip). I expect that my pockets and boots will be inspected, but as far as I'm concerned I don't see anybody watching me, neither on board nor on land...

Il y a ici beaucoup moins d'animaux, et beaucoup plus de traces d'activité humaine, je dois être une des rares à qui ça convient dans le groupe. Enfin pas tout à fait, une des passagères est ici en pélerinage car son père norvégien a travaillé à Grytviken dans sa jeunesse. Il est mort jeune, et ne parlait pas beaucoup de son expérience ici, donc elle est très émue de découvrir les lieux.

There is a lot less wildlife here, and a lot more remains of human activity, I must be one of the few that is quite OK with this in the group. Well, not exactly, one of the passengers is here on a pilgrimage, as her Norwegian father has worked in Grytviken when he was young.  He died early, and did not speak much of his whaling experience, so she is very emotional while walking around the area.

Moi aussi je suis émue, j'ai des tas de souvenirs qui me reviennent, particulièrement en visitant la petite église, et je ressens un mélange de joie d'avoir pu revenir ici, et de tristesse aussi.

I'm also a bit emotional, I have a lot of memories coming back, especially while visiting the small church, I feel a mix of happiness to be able to return here but also sadness.

Il y a une drôle de lumière, assez belle, avec du soleil et de la neige qui tombe en même temps. Certains bâtiments ont été très rénovés, en particulier cette belle maison blanche qui était je crois les baraquements des baleiniers, en 2013 elle tombait un peu en ruine.

There is a very weird light, quite interesting, with sun and snow falling at the same time. Some buildings have been heavily restored, such as this white house (whalers quarter, I think) which was closer to a ruin in 2013.

Je passe un peu de temps près des épaves des baleiniers, il y a quelques otaries pour occuper les amateurs de faune (et des canards). Je ne vais pas cette fois jusqu'au cimetière qui abrite la tombe de Shackelton, par contre je prends le temps de visiter le musée, en 2013 le temps nous était compté et on avait dû visiter au pas de course (et c'est dommage, il est vraiment bien). J'ai aussi posté un premier lot de cartes postales, il y a une poste ici, la relève a lieu une fois par mois (et on l'a loupée de quelques jours).

I spend some times near the shore, with the wrecks of the whaling ships. There are some seals (and ducks) to keep the wildlife enthusiasts busy. This time, I do not visit the cemetary where Shackleton's grave is, I want to take time to visit the museum, in 2013 we were on the clock and we had to visit in a rush (and that's a pity, it's a great museum). I also put a batch of postcards in the mail, there is a post officie here, mail is picked up about once a month (we just missed it).

Je suis contente de ce débarquement mais un peu chamboulée aussi, je reviens à bord vers 13h15 et comme je ne me sens pas très bien je vais direct à la sieste sans prendre le déjeuner. Je me réveille à 15h30 alors qu'on est en mer vers notre prochaine escale.

I am very happy by this landing, but also a bit upset, so I come back on board at 13.15. I skip lunch and go back to sleep. I wake up only at 15.30 as we are sailing towards our next stop.
