We leave around 3:15 pm, the sun is still playing with the clouds, offering us nice twilight colors. Around 5:15 we arrive near the Finnkjirka cliffs, shaped as a delicate stone cathedral. A King Crab fisherman manages to climb aboard from a small zodiac, in spite of strong wind and high waves. There is a small animation on the aft deck where you can see and touch the crabs (alive!); this species (which has been introduced, and is now invasive) makes for a large part of the fishing industry here. We stop at Kjøllefjord as the night falls. During the reunion for the passengers disembarking in Kirkenes, they were told to expect a lot of wind in the night...

Argh! Mes aurores du siècle!
This afternoon, the guide told us that tonight would be one of the best nights for Northern Lights in 6 years because of a strong solar eruption. There is a lot of excitement of course, and around 7:20 we start to see the first lights. I manage to take a few pictures during the call in Mehamn (but it's not easy since there is a lot of light coming from the ship, which is moving even when moored). I can't wait for dinner to finish and we even skip dessert, but the Northern Lights in the first part of the night remain faint, and then the clouds come!

We stay up late in the night, between the panoramic lounge (below) and the outside decks (where it's getting very cold and windy), but the sky seems to have no intention of clearing up. So most of the strongest Northern Lights in 6 years remained hidden from us... But still, I think we saw tonight our most beautiful lights of the trip.
