Cinquième jour, lumières et patience (1)

Toujours très motivée, j'ai encore mis le réveil tôt pour voir le lever du soleil, mais on ne voit absolument rien, même pas les montagnes. On quitte le mouillage vers 7h15, je suis revenue sur le pont après un nouveau petit bout de sommeil et on ne voit toujours rien. On se dirige un peu plus à l'Est vers Raudfjorden pour une exploration côtière. Le plan initial c'est de tourner un peu dans Hamiltonbukta (voir localisation sur TopoSvalbard), une des baies à l'entrée du fjord, mais vraiment, on ne voit rien, la preuve.

I have high hopes for sunrise so I wake up at 5am, but the visibility is nill, we can't even see the mountains. We hoist anchor at 7.15 and I'm back on deck after sleeping a little bit more, and we still can't see anything. Today we are heading East towards Raudfjorden for a bit of coastal exploration. The initial plan was to explore Hamiltonbukta, one of the bay near the fjord's entrance (see localisation on TopoSvalbard) , but really we can't see much.

Il y a du brouillard et de la neige qui tombe, et apercevoir les paysages est à la limite de la divination. Bon ceci dit, ça fait une petite ambiance que j'aime bien, en fait. Mais quand même, merci les techniques de navigation modernes. Il fait -14°C, dit le thermomètre du bord, et vent N/NW plutôt faible.

The fog is thick and it's raining, and it takes a lot of imagination to figure out the landscape. But I actually quite like this. Thankfully we have modern technology to assist with the sailing. Temperature is -14°C, and mild NorthWesterly wind.

On se dirige ensuite vers le fond du fjord pour trouver la limite de la glace et voir si il s'y passe des choses. La visibilité revient doucement, le brouillard se lève, la neige va s'arrêter, et ça donne des lumières intéressantes.

We then sail towards the bottom of the fjord to find the edge of the fjord ice, in the hope that there are things happening there. The visibility starts to improve slightly, the snow stops, and there are very interesting lights (and ice).

MS Origo commence à prendre son manteau d'hiver, avec une épaisseur de glace sur toutes les surfaces exposées. C'est à moitié de la neige (à l'occasion fondue et regelée), et à moitié des embruns gelés donc dès qu'on s'appuie quelque part on se retrouve avec une petite couche de sel.

MS Origo is getting its winter suit, with a  layer of ice (sometimes thick) on all exposed surfaces. It's half snow (occasionnaly melted and frozen again) and half frozen sea spray, so whenever you lay against something you get a layer of salt.

Ca c'est une des deux chaines d'ancre, celle qui ne sert pas. Il a fallu attaquer la glace de l'autre à coup de masse pour que le mécanisme puisse fonctionner. Ca se mérite la navigation hivernale (énorme coup de chapeau à l'équipage qui abat un boulot énorme dans des conditions pas faciles en gardant toujours leur bonne humeur).

This is one of two anchor chains, the one that is not in use. The other one had to be attacked with a sledgehammer to dislodge all the ice before it could be used. Winter sailing is no joke (my hat is off to the crew, who is doing an incredible job in difficult conditions and still manage to look happy at all times).

Poste extérieur de vigie à ours (souvent utilisé par Ole, Martin semble avoir une préférence pour la vigie intérieure). Il est cozy ce petit bateau, non?

This is the outside bear lookout station (often used by Ole, Martin has a preference for the inside lookout). Isn't that such a cozy little ship?

Il y a beaucoup de traces anciennes d'ours sur la glace, est-ce bon signe? On se parque dans la glace, on va attendre un peu.

There are some old bear tracks on the ice, maybe it's a good sign? We will park in the ice, and wait for a bit.

Le soleil se donne du mal pour percer, et ses efforts sont très appréciés. Les lumières sont splendides, changent tout le temps (et changent d'un bord du bateau à l'autre), le paysage est beau, pas grand chose d'autre à dire, le matin se passe comme ça tranquillement et moi je suis bien.

The sun is trying hard to get through and its efforts are well received. The lights are beautiful, changing all the time (and different from one side of the ship to the other), landscape is wonderful, not much more to say, the morning goes like this and I'm feeling good.

Et vers midi, enfin, Martin : "Polar bear!". Mais loin, très loin! Va t'il aussi se transformer en "photo bear"?

And around noon, finally, Martin : "Polar bear"! But far, really far! Will this bear also become a "photo bear"?
