Quand ça veut pas, ça veut pas

A peine remise de ma déception d'hier (mais pas encore de ma trop courte nuit), je reçois dans la matinée un message m'annonçant que la chasse aux aurores réservée ce soir (avec une autre compagnie) est annulée pour cause de prévision météo pourrie (enfin, c'est dit plus poliment, mais ça veut dire ça). Bon, du coup au moins je vais pouvoir récupérer du sommeil, parce que je me traine un peu quand même. Je sors quand même prendre l'air dans l'après-midi. L'ancien quai Hurtigruten sert maintenant à divers bateaux, hier il y avait un bateau militaire et aujourd'hui il y a un gros HLM flottant (allemand).

I'm barely over my disappointement of last night (but not quite recovered from my short night) when I receive in the morning a message telling me that my aurora chase booked for tonight (with another company) is cancelled for cause of a crappy weather forecast. Well, at least I can have a good night's sleep, because I'm not very energetic today. I get out for a walk in the afternoon. The old Hurtigruten quay is now used by various ships, yesterday there was a military ship and today a bit floating (German) building.

Le bateau Hurtigruten du jour est le MS Nordlys, à bord duquel j'ai fait un beau voyage en février 2015. Je vais le visiter par nostalgie, et puis ça me fait un but de promenade, et puis je veux voir si il a échappé au relooking scandinave moderne-catalogue IKEA. Et oui, il a gardé son délicieux charme suranné d'origine, c'est aussi un peu kitsch dans son genre mais au moins ça a un peu de personnalité. J'aime en particulier les plafonds décorés de la cafetaria (qui étaient différents à bord de tous les navires de cette génération) et les petits clins d’œil à la compagnie TFDS d'origine (l'historique de la ligne Hurtigruten est pleine de méandres et de différentes compagnie d'exploitation).

Today's Northbound Hurtigruten is MS Nordlys, on board which I had a beautiful trip in February 2015. I go visit her with a bit of nostalgia, and I wnat to see if she escapes to the modern scandi-IKEA catalog refurbishment. And she did! She has kept all her original "vintage" charm (if the 90s can be considered vintage), it's another kind of kitsch but at least there is personality.  I particularly like the decorated ceiling in the cafeteria (each ship had a different designe) and the small hommages to the original owner TFDS (the history of the Hurtigruten line is full of different companies exploiting different ships, before they were all merged).

Pas grand chose n'a changé (d'ailleurs il y a des marques du temps sur les fauteuils...) à part que le bar à l'avant du pont 4 est devenu le restaurant "A la carte" (si vous avez envie de payer encore plus cher pour les repas, c'est possible maintenant) et au fond à droite de ce bar/restaurant je découvre une bibliothèque que je n'avais pas repérée!

Not much has changed (there are signs of wear on the armchairs...), except the bar at the front of deck 4 is now the "A la carte" dining area (if you want to spend even more on food onboard, it's possible here now), and at the back of this restaurant I discover a library which I missed during my trip!

Ensuite balade-shopping (pour compléter mon équipement pour la semaine prochaine), il ne fait pas si moche, même il ferait beau, mais ça se couvre en effet pour le soir.

I keep on walking and shopping (to complete my gear for next week), the weather is not that bad, even sort of nice, but the clouds indeed come in during the evening.

Voilà pour le 14 mars, deuxième soir sans aurores...

And so that's it for March 14th, second night without the aurora...

Le 15 mars l'espoir revient car les prévisions météo annoncent un ciel plus ou moins clair au dessus de la Finlande, donc je me dis que si le guide décide d'aller vers la Finlande, on a nos chances. Et c'est bien là qu'on décide de partir, même si il y en a pour 3 heures de route. Et on arrive par là. En haut la Norvège, en bas à droite la Finlande, et en bas au milieu la Suède. C'est un soir pan-scandinave!

My hopes are up for March 15th as there are more or less clear skies forecasted over Finland, and indeed the guide decides to head there, so we have some chances. After 3 hours of driving we are here. Norway is up, bottom right is Finland, bottom middle is Sweden. This is the full Scandinavian evening!

L'endroit est très sympa, on est au milieu d'un lac gelé (il faut se faire à l'idée), on fait le feu de camp, le groupe est sympa, la soupe est bonne, on a une belle vue ouverte sur le nord, bref tout est bien, sauf que la situation météo réelle c'est ça.

The location is very nice, in the middle of a frozen lake (it takes some getting used to), we start a fire, the group is friendly, the soup is good, we have a good view towards the North, so everything is fine, except the actually weather situation is this. 

Et que ça va rester comme ça jusqu'à minuit (enfin pas tout fait, car un peu avant minuit ça se couvre encore plus et il commence à neiger). Et donc retour bredouille encore à 3h du matin. Je suis d'autant plus frustrée qu'un des clients me montre des photos d'aurores superbes qu'il a fait... hier! Et juste à 20km de Tromsø, et sans même avoir pris de tour, juste parce que le propriétaire de son hôtel lui a proposé au débotté de l'accompagner dans une chasse aux aurores. C'est vraiment pas une science exacte la météo ici. Du coup j'ose à peine être optimiste pour demain soir, qui sur le papier se présente pas trop mal. On verra.

And it stays like that until midnight (or rather, it's becoming more cloudy, if possible, and starts snowing). So we're back again at 3am empty-handed. I'm all the more frustrated since one of the client shows me awesome aurora pictures he has taken... yesterday! And just 20km away from Tromsø, without a tour, just because his hotel manager as offered him to join on a last-minute aurora hunt. Weather forecast here is really not an exact science. So I try to keep my expectations in check for tomorrow, which on the paper doen't look so bad. We'll see.
