Troisième jour, riche journée (1)

On a passé une nuit tranquille à l'ancre dans Fuglefjorden. J'ai mis le réveil à 5h20 pour voir si il y avait des lueurs du soleil levant mais c'est tout gris, donc je retourne dormir un peu. Apparemment j'ai loupé un morse qui a nagé autour du bateau vers 3h du matin (je ne suis pas encore une photographe animalière suffisamment aux aguets). Deuxième réveil vers 6h30 et cette fois on a des lumières intéressantes donc je reste dehors avant le petit-déjeuner.

We had a quiet night anchored in Fuglefjorden. I have set the alarm at 5.20am to see if there was sunrise colors, but the sky is all grey so I go back to sleep. I apparently missed a walrus swimming around the ship at 3am... I wake up for the second time at 6.30 and this time the light is interesting, so I stay outside before breakfast.

Normalement on a prévu aujourd'hui de faire route vers le nord pour trouver la banquise, mais changement de programme car un ours est aperçu! Excitation! Il est aperçu là, quelque part en bas à droite de la grande montage. Vous le voyez bien? Non? Bon, moi non plus, j'ai mis un temps fou à le repérer (avec comme aide "mais si là à droite du petit rocher sous le grand pic", c'est pas évident).

The plan for today is to head up North to find the edge of the ice shelf, but that plan is quickly dismissed because a bear is spotted! Excitment! He was spotted there, near the shore on the right. Can you see him? No? Well, me neither, and it takes me a while to see it (and people try to narrow it down with info such as "on the right of the small black rock under the big mountain", which is not much help at first). I say "he" but maybe "he" was a "she", we don't know.

Téléobjectif 300mm (et doubleur) aidant, je finis par l’identifier, mais il est vraiment loin et on ne peut pas l'approcher en bateau (pas assez de profondeur là où il est). Donc maintenant le projet c'est d'attendre de voir ce qu'il fait et surtout espérer qu'il se rapproche (et oui, notre guide Martin l'a repéré d'aussi loin, c'est pour ça qu'on l'emmène).

300mm (and 1.4 amplifier) in hand, I finally manage to identify him, but it's really far away and we cannot get closer with the ship (the sea in that area is very shallow). So the new plan is to stay here and wait to see what it does, and hope he will get closer (and yes, our guide Martin has spotted him from such a distance, that's why he's on board!).

En attendant je continue à profiter des lumières.

Meanwhile I keep enjoying the lights.

Quelque temps plus tard l'ours a un peu bougé et s'offre une petite séance de glissade sur la neige (photo recadrée, il est toujours bien loin, mais rigolo à regarder). Et il va ensuite se planquer derrière une petite colline, d'où il n'a pas l'air pressé de ressortir...

Some time later the bear has moved a bit, and has fun gliding on the snow down the mountain (that picture was cropped, he's still quite far away, but really fun to look at). Then he goes and hide behind a small hill, and doesn't seem in a hurry to come out...

Bon, on n'est pas vraiment pressé non plus, donc on va continuer à attendre, parce qu'il n'est pas question qu'on reparte tant que la bestiole n'est pas ressortie, d'un côté ou d'un autre. Il y a pire comme endroit pour attendre et je passe un bon bout de la matinée à contempler le glacier et les bords du fjord, avec le soleil qui arrive. Il fait beau, le vent est quasiment totalement tombé, et il fait presque chaud avec -10°C! C'est vraiment un endroit magnifique avec un front glaciaire superbe.

That's OK, we are in no hurry either, and we'll keep waiting, there is no question that we are not leaving until the bear has come out of hiding. There are worst places to wait, and a good part of the morning is spent watching the glacier and the fjord banks while the sun comes out. The weather is really nice, nearly no wind, and temperatures have risen to -10°C! It's such a beautiful place with a magnificient glacier front.

Petite distraction vers 11h, à défaut de l'ours toujours planqué on a la visite d'un petit renard arctique. Il va traverser tranquillou, mais bien décidé, toute l'étendue de glace sous le glacier. Il est un peu loin (certaines photos sont recadrées) mais ça permet de mettre en valeur les différentes formes et couleurs de la glace au bord du glacier (et ça donne une idée de la taille). Et c'est mon premier renard, donc je suis bien contente!

We have some distraction around 11am, short of the bear (still hidden) we have a visit from a small arctic fox, which will walk, very determined, all across the floating ice under the glacier. He's also quite far away (some pictures below are cropped) but his presence gives a nice perspective to the colors, shapes and details of the glaciers. And it's my first fox ever, so I'm really happy!

En fin de matinée décision est prise d'avancer le déjeuner et de mettre les zodiacs à l'eau cet après-midi. Puisque l'ours ne veut pas venir à nous on va essayer d'aller vers lui, et au moins ça nous fera une distraction. La balade en zodiac dans les navigations hivernales ça n'est pas une mince affaire, beaucoup de manutention et il faut qu'on s'équipe de nos supers combinaisons de survie, alors il faut une bonne raison et de bonnes conditions pour le faire. Là, avec cette météo clémente, pas de vent et la possibilité de l'ours, tout le monde est très motivé.

By the end of the morning it's decided that we will have an early lunch, and get the zodiac in the water this afternoon. Since the bear does not want to come to us, we will try to go to him, and it will give us some distraction this afternoon. A zodiac ride in winter is not a casual affair, a lot of gear handling and we have to put on our survival suits, so we need the right conditions and a good incentive. With this weather, no wind, and the promise of a bear, everybody is extremely motivated.
