I was having a great night, when suddenly someone knocks on my door at 3.30am : "polar bear on the ice edge"! I get up and try to focus, and get out to see. Yes there is a bear on the fjord ice but we are quite far and it's still dark. As we had such a great "bear" time yesterday, I leave this one be (same one or different one?) and go back to sleep for a bit. But the sky looked really promising, so I set the clock for 5am and it turns out to be a great idea. Wonderful blue light at the start, then the slowly increasing lights of sunset, together with the reflections and this incredible glacier landscape, I couldn't ask for more. The bear has left, it's fine.

Anchor is lifted well before 6, and we are back to yesterday's plan which was interrupted by our show-off bear. We head to the North, with the aim to get to the edge of the ice shelf and sail along it, in the hope to make some interesting encounters.

The sunset is still going on, with the lights and colors I came to see, pink gold and yellow gold, the first rays of light on the mountain, I'm having a blast. It's a bit cold (-14°C) with some wind.

At 7 I get back to bed as land is getting further away, until breakfast. We are now in open sea, and there is a lot more wind (6-7, North-Easterly) and waves, so I get back into a horizontal position. Around 11 it gets quieter so I go up to the bridge. We are traveling in thick fog, but there is a lighter hue in the front.  The waves have subsided and the temperature dropped (-18°C), we are probably not far from the ice. I go for a shower while the conditions are manageable, and I hear the sound of the ice against the hull.

We sail slowly towards the North in the drifting ice.

Esthetically, it's really pleasing, but it does not go as planned because the ice is very dense and thick, so Origo is making her way quite slowly. The ice edge seems to be much further North than we hoped, and we can't find it. I spend some times outside or on the bridge. It's white and blue and grey and beautiful!

At 3pm we still cannot see the ice shelf, and no living soul on the horizon. The authorities decide that we will turn around, and sail sideways in the ice (South-East direction) while still looking for wildlife. Our Northernmost latitude was 80°31'062N. There is even a brief glimpse of the sun, which doesn't spoil the view.

Unfortunately snow starts to fall, visibility fades, the wind that had abated comes back and there is a long swell that doesn't help with the course. Thankfully, Origo is solidly built and keeps going, but not fast. We keep ourselves occupied, Martin gives a talk about polar bear, we have dinner, beers, some computer time... We are out the ice only at 9pm and head back towards Fugelfjorden for the night. There is some rocking and rolling. We drop anchor only around midnight, or so I've been told as I went to bed early, a bit tired by my interrupted night.
