Eungella National Park et ses drôles de bestioles

Et nous voilà donc arrivés en haut. Je n'ai pas réussi à prendre des photos de la route qui monte et tourne, mais pour vous prouver qu'on est bien en hauteur, voilà des photos prises depuis un point de vue aménagé, on voit la route sur laquelle on est arrivé en contrebas (plus visible sur la deuxième photo).

And a little while later, here we are at the top. I didn't manage to take pictures of the climbing, winding road, but to show you that we are indeed elevated, here are some views from a lookout. You can see the valley road we came on (better seen on the second picture I think).

Bon, et à part en haut, on est où? Ici, on est sur la commune de Eungella (prononcez Younguella, à peu près), à l'entrée du Parc National du même nom (voir toujours la carte). On va passer ici 4 nuits, dans des petits bungalows du charmant Broken River Mountain Resort. Et pourquoi on vient là? Tout d'abord parce que c'est la montagne, et l'hiver on vient à la montagne. C'est un des rares endroits du Queensland où on peut vraiment profiter d'une soirée autour d'un feu de cheminée. Dans une région où on fête Noël en short et tongs autour d'une salade, ça s'apprécie. Il fait nettement plus frais en effet ici, et ça se sentira la nuit en particulier (surtout qu'il n'y a pas de chauffage dans les bungalows), avec des températures à un seul chiffre, parfois très petit!

So, we are at the top, but at the top where? We are in Eungella (pronounce "Young Ella", roughly), at the entrance of the Eungella National Park (see the map).  We will spend 4 nights here, in those bungalows of the charming Broken River Mountain Resort. And why was this place chosen? First because it's in the mountain, and in the winter it's nice to come to the mountain. It's one of the rare spot in Queensland where you can really enjoy a cozy evening in front of a chimney fire. In an area where Christmas is celebrated in tshirts and short pants around a celebratory salad, this is priceless. It is indeed a lot chiller in here, particularly at night, with single-digit temperatures, and there is no heating in the bungalows (apart from a wood stove).

Et aussi, on vient ici parce que donc il y a un parc naturel très riche. Il recouvre 517km² de forêt humide bien préservée, avec une belle biodiversité floristique et faunistique et de nombreuses espèces endémiques et/ou rares. En particulier, à proximité immédiate de notre hébergement coule la Broken River, et on va y faire un tour dès cet après-midi.

We also come here because of the National Park. It covers 517km² of rather pristine wet tropical mountain forest, with a rich biodiversity, both in plants and animals, including endemic and/or rare species. The resort gets its name from the nearby Broken River, which we visit in the afternoon.

Il y a de très nombreuses tortues (dont je ne connais pas l'espèce précise).

There are many water turtles (I don't know the exact species).

Et surtout, surtout, cette bestiole étrange qui fait des ronds dans l'eau...

But actually, we are here mostly for this weird critter that makes ripples in the water...

Vous l'avez reconnu? Le platypus, le canarcastor (comme dit mon frère), enfin bref l'ornithorynque de légendes. C'est un des très rares endroits où on peut le voir en conditions naturelles, et même là ils ne sont pas très nombreux (une petite dizaine), donc on se sent très chanceux de réussir à en apercevoir un ou deux dès le premier soir.

Did you guess? Yes, it's a platypus! It's one of the very few areas where you can see some in natural conditions, and even there they are very few (about ten), so we feel very lucky to manage to see a couple on the first day.

On reconnait le côté "bec" car il a des yeux et pas de poils. C'est vraiment une drôle de bête, plus petite que je pensais (entre 40 et 50cm taille adulte, hors tout).

The "head" side is recognizable from the tail because it has eyes and no fur. It's a really weird creature, smaller than I expected (between 40 and 50cm adult size, all included).

On peut le voir surtout quand il sort pour manger (ce qui occupe bien la moitié de son temps, quand même). Il plonge jusqu'à fouiller le fond de l'eau avec son bec, en récupérant des vers, des larves d'insectes, des invertébrés aquatiques ou des petits poissons. Il remplit ses joues, puis après 1 à 2 minutes remonte en surface pour respirer et mâcher ses proies. Quand l'eau est peu profonde on peut suivre son trajet sous l'eau avec les remous et les bulles, donc deviner plus ou moins où il va remonter.

We can see them mainly when they come out to feed (which they do about half their time, but often at night).  They dive to forage the water and bottom with their beak, and gather worms, insect larvae, small fish, aquatic invertabrates. They store their prey in their cheeks, and after a couple of minutes come to the surface to breath and chew. When the water is shallow you can see their path underwater with the ripples and the bubbles, and so you can more or less guess where they will come out.

C'est assez fascinant donc on y passe un bon moment, jusqu'à la descente du soleil (toujours assez tôt, il se couche complètement vers 18h). C'est vraiment un très joli endroit et je sens qu'on va passer ici un séjour bien agréable.

It's rather fascinating, so we stay there a  while, until the sun starts to come down. It's a really beautiful place and I think we will have a great time here.

On prend l'apéro devant la cheminée avant un très bon diner au restaurant du lieu d'hébergement. Il y  a des couvertures supplémentaires dans les chambres, elles sont vraiment les bienvenues!

We then have drinks in front of the fire (yes, really nice) before having a very good diner at the resort's restaurant. There are extra blankets in the room, they will come in habdy during the night!
