On the road (Noosa)

Bon, cette fois, vers 6h40, on est parti pour de bon! J'ai fait une petite carte pour les gens qui aiment bien les cartes, comme moi. En gros, on va remonter la route A1 (Bruce Highway) jusqu'à Cairns, par étape (1 à 3 jours de route, puis 3-4 jours au même endroit). Là on est parti pour la plus longue étape, puisqu'on va avaler plus de 1000 km en 3 jours jusqu'à Eungella National Park. Il est prévu des petites haltes sur la route dans des points intéressants. Le premier point, c'est Noosa. C'est une station balnéaire en vogue, sous un petit parc national sillonné de chemins de randonnée. Première halte au bord de la Noosa River (ils ne se fatiguent vraiment pas trop pour nommer leurs cours d'eau).

Goodbye Brisbane, at 6.40 am we are on the road for good! I have made a map of the places we will go through, for those who enjoy maps like me. Roughly, we will drive up the A1 road (Bruce Highway) until Cairns, in several legs of 1-3 days driving and then a 3-4 days stop in an interesting place. We are starting with the longest leg, a drive of about 1000 km (over 3 days) until Eungella National Park. We will make halts to break the drive along the way. Today, our first halt is Noosa. It's a popular seaside town, nestled under a small National Park hosting many hiking trails. First stop by the Noosa River (they do not work really hard to give names to their rivers).

Dans toutes les petites villes, il y a au moins un parc public avec des toilettes (toujours propres) et au moins un barbecue collectif, donc pour pique-niquer on amène ses saucisses, on fait griller, on nettoie derrière soi, et hop. Très pratique.

In every little town, there is at least one public area with public toilets (always clean) and at least one barbecue for collective use. If you want to picnic, just bring your sausages, you grill them, clean behind you, bon appetit. Very convenient. 

Et voilà Noosa Beach. Très emblématique des stations balnéaires de la côte du Queensland, sable blanc, mer transparente (particulièrement jolie ici), tout propre et bien léché. C'est l'hiver, il y a peu de monde dans l'eau (pourtant c'est la saison où il n'y a pas de "stingers", ces petites méduses très urticantes qui sont un gros problème en été).

And here is Noosa Beach. Very typical of the seaside resorts along Queensland coast, white sand, transparent sea (especially beautiful here), all clean and polished. It's winter, and there are not many people in the water (although it's a season when there are no "stingers", a small but very potent jellyfish, which is a big problem in summer).

On prend un des chemins côtiers, bien aménagé en bas de la colline du Parc National.

We take a coastal path at the bottom of the hill hosting the National Park. 

Sauf erreur, ces arbres sont du genre Melaleuca (il y a plusieurs espèces), cousins des Eucalyptus et très fréquents sur la côte du Queensland. Beaucoup sont appelés "paperbark" (écorce papier) car l'écorce s'effrite en très fines plaques, fines comme du papier.

Unless I'm wrong, these are trees from the Genus "Melaleuca" (there are several species), related to Eucalyptus and quite frequent along the Queensland coasts. Many are called "paperbark" because their bark comes off in paper-thin layers.

Petite surprise au loin : si il n'y a pas de stingers, en revanche, il y a des baleines! Surtout des baleines à bosse, en migration depuis l'Antarctique vers les eaux plus chaudes. Elles sont loin et c'est très recadré, mais ce sont bien des baleines! On en voit même qui sautent hors de l'eau. Quelle chance!

A good surprise on the horizon : it's not stinger season, but it's whale season, although we were not hoping to see any. Mostly humpback whales, migrating from Antarctica to warmer waters. They are far away, so I heavily recroped the pictures, but believe me, there are whales! We even see some breaching out of the water. Lucky us!

Il y a plein de loriquets arc-en-ciel dans les arbres au bord de la plage. On en verra plusieurs centaines d'autres le soir, dans des grands arbres sur la rue principale de Childers où on s'arrête pour la nuit.

There are plenty of rainbow lorikeets in the trees near the beach. We will see hundreds of them later on in the day, in big trees on the main street of Childers, where we stop for the night.

Childers est assez représentative des petites villes qu'on va traverser, une grande rue principale bordée de magasins, toujours au moins un pub/hotel qui a parfois connu des jours meilleurs. Ca me rappelle un peu la ville où j'ai habité en Californie du nord. Childers a un petit caractère en plus, avec de nombreux bâtiments "heritage listed" (d'intérêt patrimonial, on pourrait dire), ce qui lui donne une certaine personnalité.

Childers is fairly typical of many little towns we will drive through, a long main street lined with shops, at least one pub/hotel which sometimes has seen better days. It reminds me of the small country town I have lived in in Northern California. Childers has some extra character, with many of its builings heritage listed, which gives the town some interesing personality.

Parmi les bâtiments historiques, celui-ci qui a connu un drame. C'était autrefois un hôtel pas cher pour les "backpackers", voyageurs itinérants qui gagnaient quelques sous en participant aux récoltes de fruits et canne à sucre. En juin 2000, un travailleur local qui avait exprimé beaucoup de colère contre ces travailleurs étrangers a mis volontairement le feu au bâtiment. Les mesures de sécurité étaient insuffisantes, et 15 personnes sont mortes dans l'incendie. Le bâtiment a depuis été rénové, et abrite une galerie d'art et un centre d'information, ainsi qu'un mémorial pour les victimes.

Amongst the historic buildings, this one has known a terrible tragedy. It is a former backpackers hostel, for foreign travelers staying in the area while making a few bucks picking fruits or sugar cane. In June 2000, a local worker, who had expressed hatred towards those foreigners, started a fire in the building. The security systems were lacking, and 15 people died. The building has been rebuilt since then, and now hosts an art gallery and information center, along with a memorial to the victims.

Après un repas dans un pub (où je goute le barramundi, poisson local, pas mal du tout), nous passons une nuit réparatrice dans un motel, histoire de compléter l'expérience "road trip".

After dinner in a pub (I taste barramundi, a famous local fish, quite nice), we spend a refreshing night in a motel, to complete the "road trip" experience.
