You will now understad the main reason of our stay here : in the morning, the sun rises. OK, that is not really unique. It rises from the East, not so unique either, even in the Southern hemisphere. It rises over the sea, so that's a change from my Normandy corner, but locally it's not very special. Anyway, it's quite a beautiful sunset, very interesting early kights (very early, ugh) over the islands and a very slim moon quarter.

So, why did we come all the way up there to especially see the sunrise over the sea? Because in addition to the sea and lights and moon, there are things on the beach. Can you spot them?

OK, we can't really see that well either, so I try another point of view by completely laying down on the sand. The sand is very fine and wet and I think it went inside my camera's lens (which didn't like it so much), but I have no regrets as I come up with one of my favorite picture of the trip (one of my favorite pictures ever, to be honest).

So, in the morning at Cape Hillsborough you can see kangaroos on the beach at sunrise. So now, how is that for unique?

Let's take a little bit of magic out. There is a staff member of the local conservation area up on the beach giving them pellet food. As I am a bit surprised about this, he explains that it's a way to prevent people from giving them stupid things to eat. Hmm. I'm a bit doubtful, but at least there is someone in an "official" capacity to maintain the watchers (about 50, I was fearing more, that's way enough) at safe distance and in a line so that everybody can watch without bothering the animals. So let's forget the people for a while and imagine ourselves alone in the wilderness, meditating on the meaning of life, as this kangaroo is likely doing.

There are some occastional tension about territory (and food, probably) with very interesting ballet/boxing matches.

Here you can see the difference between kangaroo (big) and wallaby (small). We have both today, about 10 of each.

Meanwhile, the sun keeps going up, and even comes out from behind the rocks, giving a very lovely warm light.

The critters arrived (and will leave) through the forest and mangrove along the beach (with trees brought  down by cyclone Debbie).

Je pense qu'il y a un bébé là-dedans (ça bouge).

I think there is a small one in here (it's called a "joey").

Now that the sun is coming up, I'm experimenting with backlit photography. My first attempt immortalizes this fully romantic moment (I'm sure you always wondered how does a kangaroo goes to the bathroom. Search no more).

Wonderful, isn't it? Do you want to be taken back a litte to reality, with this guy taking a break before disappearing in his forest?

Non, c'est pas drôle. Revenons au contre-jour.

No, that's not nice. Lets go back to our backlit kangaroo.

Petite toilette.

Grooming time.

And he decided  to go back see if there is some food left.

And they disappear one by one, directly into the forest or along the beach to enter the forest further away.

So it was really worth it to come here and wake up early, don't you think?

JJM
