Jour tranquille à Eungella, bis

Après notre épuisante (?) balade d'hier, aujourd'hui c'est un jour farniente à Eungella. Ci-dessous une photo de nos hébergements, vous comprendrez que ce n'est pas le bagne de ne rien faire ici. Il a fait si froid cette nuit que l'herbe est couverte de gelée blanche ce matin (je vous rappelle que les chambres ne sont pas chauffées...), mais très vite le soleil fait oublier tout ça.

After yesterday's exhausting (?) hike, today is a relaxing day in Eungella. Below is a picture of our accomodation, you will agree that doing nothing in such an environnement is not a difficult task. It has been so cold during the night that the grass this morning is covered in frost (let me remind you that there is no heating in the rooms...) but quickly the sun and blue sky are back.

Je profite de ma journée pour explorer tranquillou le coin. Côté rivière, avec ses habitants...

I will make use of my day to explore the area leisurely. On the river side, with its inhabitants...

Et côté forêt. Beaucoup de milieux et paysages différents à peu de distance, quelle richesse!

And on the forest side.  So many different environments and landscapes so close together, really wonderful!

C'est aussi une journée riche en observations ornithologiques (j'ai été épatée pendant tout mon séjour par la diversité des oiseaux, et la facilité à les observer - notez quand même que la plupart des photos sont recadrées!).

It's also a day rich with bird sightings (I was amazed during all my stay by the diversity in bird life, and how easy it is to watch them - please still note that many of my pictures are cropped!).

Un petit passereau pas totalement identifié, peut-être le white-browed robin (miro bridé en français), mais si il y a des ornithologistes avertis qui passent par là, n'hésitez pas à nous en dire plus.

A small unidentifed passerine bird (maybe the white-browed robin?). If there are knowledgeable bird watchers in the audience, don't hesitate to tell us more!

Une brève versicolore (brève, c'est le nom), dont l'éclat métallique sur l'aile m'a attiré l’œil quand elle a bougé dans un buisson... Après elle a posé bien obligeamment.

A noisy pitta, whose metallic blue streak on the wing caught my eye as she was moving in a bush... Then she nicely posed for a while.

Les cacatoès à huppe jaune, vraiment très courants ici, souvent en groupe.

Sulfur-crested cockatoos, very common here, often in flock.

La perruche à tête pâle, également très abondante.

Pale-headed rosella, also quite common. 

Et mon chouchou, le kookabura rieur (ou martin-pêcheur géant). Ca a été un festival ce jour.

And my favorite, the laughing kookabura. Today was quite a festival.

You talkin' to me?

Nous avons de nouveaux habitants dans la rivière. Vous vous rappelez le cormoran que j'ai pris en photo au bord de la rivière il y a deux jours? Ce midi, nous avons casse-crouté dans la Maison du Parc et nous avons croisé une équipe de tournage de la BBC, qui mettait des petites annonces pour qu'on leur signale toute observation de cormoran. Ah ben, ça tombe bien! Ils nous expliquent qu'ils font un documentaire sur l’ornithorynque, et que justement ils voudraient bien des images de cormoran qui viennent manger le pain (enfin, les poissons) dans la bouche des ornithorynques quand ils remontent à la surface pour mâcher leurs prises. Les martin-pêcheurs font ça aussi. J'imagine bien que ça doit faire des chouettes images. Donc on leur indique où on a vu notre cormoran, et dans la soirée voilà nos documentaristes à poste. Maintenant, il n'y a plus qu'à attendre. Attendront t'ils longtemps? Affaire à suivre. En tout cas, ça n'est pas un métier de tout repos, faut donner de sa personne.

We have new inhabitatns in the river. Remember the cormorant I saw two days ago? Today, as we are having lunch in the Park's Visitor Center, we meet a film team from the BBC, putting up an ad asking to be notified of any cormorant sighting. They are making a documentary about platypus, and would like to have images of a cormorant stealing food from the mouth of a platypus when they come to the surface to chew on their prey. Kingfishers also do that. It must indeed be quite spectacular to watch. So we tell them when and where we have seen our cormorant, and later in the day here is the team ready for... a long wait, probably. It's clearly not an easy job!

Comme hier, les observations continuent pendant le repas, avec encore un kookabura (amis végétariens, cet oiseau mange de la viande, oui oui).

 As yesterday, the fauna-watching continues throughout dinner, with another kookabura (yes, this is a meat-eating bird).

Et un nouveau possum, plus roux que celui d'huer, mais toujours aussi fascinant à regarder.

And a new possum, with a more reddish fur, still fascinating to watch.

Pour une journée glandouille, je trouve que ça a été très agréablement rempli (j'ai dû faire la sieste, à un moment). Et c'est notre dernière nuit à Eungella ce soir, demain on reprend la route vers le nord.

For an easy day, it was quite nicely filled (I may have napped also, at some point). And this will be our last night in Eungella, tomorrow we are back on the road, northbound.
