After the fast-paced few days on the road, today is a day for doing nothing, except relax and enjoy the area. The area being more than nice, it is very easy to be satisfied . Early start of the day with a stroll along the river, and the morning platypus.

Then I go for a foggy walk along the road that goes to the village. You were probably not imagining Australia quite like this, were you? Well, me neither. It almost looks like Switzerland.

At mid-day we go down to the village of Eungella for a snack (there is the usual grocery store/pub/post office/etc...). On the way, we stop for a short stroll to a viewpoint down the valley (Sky Window Lookout).

The store owner tells us about Cyclone Debbie, which hit the area pretty hard a few months ago. This is not the strongest cyclone the area has endured in terms of wind speed, but it lasted for unusually long (30 hours locked up in your house, wondering when the roof is going to give up, must feel like a very long time), and it was followed by torrential rains of a rare intensity. As I said before, you need to have a stong mind to live here.
As we leave the pub, we meet this very handsome pale headed rosella, rather common here.

Et une pousse de fougère arborescente. Je trouve ça fascinant.
And a baby tree fern. I find them fascinating.

This difficult morning calls for a post-lunch nap. Then I go back for a walk on the road. It really feels like you are in the Alps, but with palm trees.

Another bird meeting with a laughing kookaburra, a very Australian bird. It's a giant cousin of the kingfishers (it's bigger than a pigeon). It gets its name from its song, which really sounds like it's laughing heartily. It's a very handsome bird. We will hear it often (and see it quite regularly as well).

And back to the river for the evening turtles and platypus, in the light of the setting sun.

Note the presence of this cormorant, drying its wing. We'll get back to it on a later day.

Another aperitif around the fire, and dinner at the lodge's restaurant. I feel like I'm at a peaceful retreat far away from the world (and I can understand the appeal for locals to come here in winter). The night is even cooler that the previous one!

Cdlt.
