The real road trip starts tomorrow, and today M. still has to go to work. F. and I have a local touristic program for the day. We start early in the morning, walk back to the river. There is a very thick fog and you can only guess the shape of the CBD's building (CBD = central business district, a very Australian concept I think). I understand that fog is not very common here. It's winter now (yes, winter in July), which means temperatures around 25°C and no rain, looks absolutely perfect to me.

We get on the "City-Cat", public transport on water, to go down the river to South Bank, in the center. We have some time to wander in the streets and take a coffee. Australians have quite a strong coffee culture, even for breakfast, and there are plenty of coffee shops where you can grab a hot drink and muffin on the go, or sit down for a more relaxed meal. However, it takes a few trials and errors for me to get a simple plain coffee, and I learn to order a "short black".

At 10 we climb aboard Miramar II (I didn't take a picture), a boat that will take us up the river this time, for about 12 km. The landscape is quite nice, when we leave the city center we enter quite a posh area with grand houses.

The journey ends at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This park was created in 1927 to offer shelter to injured or orphaned koalas, at the time when they were widely hunted for their fur. Today the species is protected, and is considered as vulnerable in the East of Australia where it occurs naturally. Lone Pine is still a koala conservatory (about 130 of them live there full time), and it is also a zoo (not a bad one) where you can see many of Australia's emblematic animal species. So that was a good introduction for me to local wildlife. Here are some of our encounters. First, what can be considered as a local pigeon, the Rainbow lorikeet. We will see them quite often and everywhere. The colors are stunning.

An emu (here in a sitting position) with dinosaur-like legs, and looking like he just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

A Hairy-nosed wombat (sorry for the terrible picture). It looks like a cross between a pig, a rat and a rabbit, and it's actually a marsupial, like the kangaroos, and it's very much going extinct. It is quite a fascinating critter. If someone reading this knows anything about wombat anatomy, can you tell if this is a male or a female?

Speaking of kangaroos, they are everywhere in the park, jumping around more or less freely. You can buy special food to feed them, but they must be stuffed, because they couldn't care less about our offerings. They actually look quite peaceful and chill, but they carry impressive muscles.

Maman et bébé.

Mum and baby.

And there are also wallabies (like a kangaroo, but more compact).

And of course the park's heroes, the koalas. They really are so cute! I spare you the touristic picture of me holding a koala (for 5 seconds, for a "modest" fee, but it goes to a good cause, I think). Koalas are scattered around the park according to their age and sex. The park has its own eucalyptus plantation, so they have fresh food every day.

Finding a koala awake and moving can be a challenge, because they sleep 20h a day. And they can sleep about everywhere and in any position.

We will see kangaroos again during the trip, but as far as koalas are concerned, this is my best shot, so it was worth it. We meet one more weird critter on the steps going back down to the ship (I don't know how it's called, it was about 80cm long, tail included).

The journey back is just as nice.

And we are back at the CBD. As the light is better than this morning, here is a glimpse of it. In contrast with yesterday's nice characterful neighborhood, it's certainly lacking charm and personality. The urban center is growing fast, and old neighborhods are progressively replaced by big buildings. It's probably necessary, but it's really sad.

Just behind the bridge, you can see some of the old "big" city center buildings remaining,  looking now very small and lost.

Today is 14th of July, which is France's National Day. My friends are very francophile, and they invite me to dinner to a French restaurant near their home. Dinner is very good, and this is probably the first time in a long time that I celebrate 14th of July (outside of fireworks watching on the beach when I was a kid). We are leaving early tomorrow morning, so we go to sleep early as well.
