We can't have nice lights everyday... Especially when you get up too late, I seem to have missed a great sunrise at the stop in Vadsø early this morning. There are a few leftovers when I get out shortly before 8, but now that we are going East (and South) the sun rises up earlier.

There are a lot of cloudes as we sail up the fjord towards Kirkenes, end of the first half of the trip, where we turn around and go back the other way.So, no photos, but I'm outside anyway. In Kirkenes we are losing our dinner companion, who is leaving here and will now get back to Brittany only by bus and train, that's real adventure! In exchange, we welcome on board a couple I have virtually met on a travel forum. They are used to more standard cruises, but have dreamt of Hurtigruten for a while now. They have chosen this particular ship, that's brave, but they seem to adapt smoothly.

I go out for a walk in Kirkenes, necessary step in my pilgrimage. I do like the quircky atmospher in this town, very unique, but I confess it has more charm with snow (and sun).

OK, the sun is trying its best through the clouds. The fjord in front of Kirkenes is like a mirror. Here there still are big russian fishing boats, many are ready for King crab fishing, with impressive walls of crab traps each nearly one meter high.

I had missed during my previous trips this house built on a bunker (many years ago, judging from the decrepit state).

We leave at 12.30, we had a quick lunch before. The sky is still cloudy. I realize for the first time that we do not exit the fjord from the same way we entered, which explains why I never saw the lighthouse on the way in!

Quelques lumières de couchant quand même...

Some sunset lights already...

I think I have never seen the Barents Sea so calm. We are very lucky with the weather during this trip, a lot of sun, no rain to speak of, almost no wind, so no waves. We see an unidentified marine mammal (and a seal in the fjord, this morning).

We arrive in Vardø, with my second favorite lighthouse after the one in Landegode. WildPhoto Norway does bird safaris from Vardø, and I heard that in the future they might be able to sleep in this lighthouse. If that happens, I take the trip just for the night there!

I really enjoy Vardø, one of my favorite port of call, but I'm very sad to find out that the wharehouse that hosted the "Eternal night Eternal light" mural painting has been destroyed (and the painting with it).

We arrive 20 minutes late so I run to visit the Pomor museum (since I just discovered it's here, and not in Honningsvågas I thought). It's a very small museum so I still have time to tour it. Very nice museum and I learn a lot about the history of exchanges and trades between Norway and Russia during the Pomor era (18th to early 20th century, roughly).

Quelle aventure!

I would really like one day to have the time to visit the Steilneset memorial to women victims of witchhunts in the 17th century, but it's further away from the harbour and you would need to arrive on time in port to be able to visit it. After dinner I stay inside but with an eye on the all-sky webcams (here or here for instance) and magnetograms (same, or here),so I can keep an eye on the sky from a warm place. And absolutely nothing happens, so I go to bed at midnight, and there will be nothing more during the night. The Northern Lights are shy this year. And so you know, the lens I ordered has arrived at destination and I will find it on Friday night in Hamnøy! What an adventure!

Lovely! I have never been to Kirkenes, only in Lofoten and Tromsø :-))
