Jour 15 - Chenal Lemaire (round 1)

Since the beginning of the journey, each day felt more extraordinary than the previous one, and we wonder when it's going to stop. Today maybe? Actually, not today. Let's face it : it was our most beautiful and strongest day. Which means I have taken a lot of (too many) pictures. I'm trying to sort them out but it is difficult to distantiate myself from the incredible experience and choose only a small number of pictures to show. So there will be many messages to tell the story of this day, with plenty of ice and mountains and snow (under many different lights), and some surprise meetings! I hope it's not too boring.

Lever 5h30.

We wake up at 5.30. We quickly grab a coffee and biscuits and head for deck 5 at the bow of the ship, because we are supposed to enter the Lemaire Channel.  There is a lot of ice, but we are at the entrance of the Channel at 6, as promised. Snow is falling lightly, but there is no wind at all, and in spite of the grey weather the experience of slaloming between the icebergs, very slowly, with the mountains reflecting in the water, is mind-blowing.

I took from afar some pictures of this skua, with interesting mirror effects of its outstretched wings. Looking more closely, it's actually having breakfast... on a penguin, maybe ill or more tired than the others.

We open the road for the Ocean Nova, coming out of the fog behind us. And suddenly, seeing this ship in the landscape gives an idea of the size of the cliffs (from aboard, they look so much smaller). The ship looks so small! Glaciers are screaming and creaking, it's a bit scary. Around 8 we reach the other end of the Channel, with a huge feeling of joy and accomplishment (although we didn't do much : thank you and congratulation capitain, once again).

The Ocean Nova stops at Peterman Island. We keep going South, with still plenty of ice. Quick breakfast before going out again (we are always worry of missing out on something when we eat...). In the distance, the sun is starting to come out and shines on some mountains on the horizon. And suddenly, in front of us, sea ice, packed, immaculate. Will this stop the ship?
