Hammerfest

We are lucky again this morning with the sunrise, these beautiful colors, all over on the horizon and on the snow.

There is even a little bit of sun, after the (quick) stop in Havøysund, as we pass MS Finnmarken under the windmill farm (sorry, the Northernmost windmill farm).

The clouds are coming in during the day and we arrive in Hammerfest under a more contrasted sky (still nice). Shortly before port we pass in front of the huge ground installations of the Snøhvit (Snow White) project, which exploits a huge natural gas field in the Barents Sea (a highly profitable project for Norway's economy, but also very controversial as some argue that the Barents Sea is too fragile to handle such a development).

I go for a walk in Hammerfest. As in other towns in Northern Norway, the roads and walkways have a lot of snow (even ice in places) but cars and people have the right equipment so it is not an issue. And as in most ports, Hurtigruten ships dock right in the city center,  as you can see. Most towns can be visited on foot from the ship without problems.

As we leave Hammerfest at 12.45, the sky is completely overcast, the light is very white and it is sometimes hard to say where the mountains stop and where the sky begins, all the contrasts are toned down.

We don't really notice when the sun actually set, apart from the slow shifting to the blue evening tinges as we arrive in  Øksfjord arount 3.45. It's a stop I really like, a very small village at the end of a rounded fjord, the stop is always very quick but there are always people to go in and out, even though it looks to be in the middle of nowhere.

And then the night comes. Since it has clouded up during the evening, I'm not really optimistic for Northern Lights tonight, but weather changes quickly here, so I still will be out occasionnaly to check the sky!
