Havøysund, Honningsvåg, lumières du matin

C'est ma compagne de voyage qui me réveille peu après 7h car, me dit-elle "il y a un lever de soleil de folie!". Donc vite vite habillée, équipée, et dehors, et en effet, c'est très beau. Ce que j'aime en cette saison c'est que ces lumières durent très longtemps, changent tout doucement, et ça remplit l'horizon de tous les côtés. Côté soleil qui se lève bien sûr, mais aussi à l'opposé, avec le ciel qui se teinte doucement de rose, et les montagnes enneigées qui renvoient la lumière et se colorent aussi, doucement, jusqu'à être touchées au sommet par les premiers rayons du soleil. Vraiment les lumières et les couleurs que je viens chercher ici en hiver.

I am woken up rather early by my travel companion telling me there is "a crazy awesome sunset". So I hurriedly dress and go out and indeed, it was really worth it. What I like here in this season is that these lights linger on, change very slowly, and fill up the horizon from every direction. In the direction of the rising sun of course, but also on the opposite side, the sky is getting slowly pink, and the snowy mountains sending back the light and getting some colors as well, slowly, until they finally get hit by the first rays of sun. There are really the lights and colors that I long for when I plan for a trip here in winter.

Il y a vraiment beaucoup de vent aujourd'hui (dans les 25-30 noeuds, il me semble) et ça soulève des nuages de neige en haut des montagnes, on dirait que les montagnes fument. Ca ne gâche rien à la magie du moment, au contraire (bon, ça n'aide pas beaucoup pour la température ressentie non plus. Au thermomètre ce matin il fait -4°C, à l'abri du vent).

There is a lot of wind this morning (I would say around 25/30 knots) and it's blowing clouds of snow at the top of the mountains, as if the mountains were smoking. It doesn't spoil at all the magic of the moment. But it doesn't help with the cold (-4°C this morning, feeling a whole lot less in the wind).

Sur le planning de la journée, on nous a annoncé qu'on devait croiser ce matin le MS Lofoten. Comme je sais qu'il est au chantier pour sa maintenance annuelle, ça m'étonnerait quand même beaucoup (les textes doivent être préparés à l'avance pour toute la saison, ils ne changent que la date!). Mais bon, j'ai beau avoir vérifié hier soir sur le site de Marine Traffic qu'il était bien à l'arrêt à plusieurs centaines (milliers?) de km de là, je guette quand même en bas du champ d'éoliennes pour voir si un bateau va sortir de derrière la falaise... Mais non, pas de miracle, il n'a pas été télétransporté pendant la nuit. Dommage, avec ce décor et cette lumière, ça aurait été joli... Au fait, le champ d'éoliennes en question, c'est le champ d'éolienne le plus au nord de l'Europe (ça commence).

On the daily program, it said that we should cross the MS Lofoten this morning. As I know she is in dry docks for her annual maintenance, I'm highly skeptical about that (the flyers must be ready in advance for the whole season!). But still, even if I have doubled-checked yesterday on Marine Traffic that the ship was standing still a few hundreds (thousands?) kilometers from here, I still search at the bottom of the windmill farm for a ship's silhouette to appear behind the cliff... But no such luck. Too bad, with this light and this decor, I would have loved to see my beloved ship here.

Still a lot of wind coming down the mountains as we arrive in the charming town of  Havøysund. Brrr.

On arrive un peu plus tard dans le chenal de Magerøya (entre l'ile du même nom, celle où est le Cap Nord, et le continent). On ne peut pas dire que ça se calme beaucoup côté vent, donc on a toujours la neige qui "fume" en haut des sommets, et parfois aussi il y a de grandes bourrasques de neige qui sont soulevées en bas des parois. Le ciel lui-même est un peu couvert.

A little later in the day we are in the  Magerøya strait (between the Magerøya island, where North Cape is, and the mainland). The wind situation is not getting any better, so we still have the snow "smoke" on the mountain tops, and sometimes huge gusts of snow are propelled down the slopes. The sky is overcast.

Comme souvent un peu avant d'arriver à Honningsvåg (l'escale de départ pour l'excursion au Cap Nord), il y a un gros bateau pétrolier en relâche dans la petite baie.

As often, before arriving in  Honningsvåg (start of the North Cape excursion), there is a huge oil ship moored in the small bay.

Arrivée à Honningsvåg, je pensais que j'allais être tranquille toute seule à bord pendant l'escale car je ne vais pas au Cap Nord, mais finalement personne n'y va car il y a eu un accident de véhicule sur la route et elle n'a pas pu être dégagée à temps (comme je me souvient bien, ces choses-là prennent du temps ici. J'espère que tout le monde va bien).

Once in Honningsvåg, I had hoped to have the ship all to myself as I have opted not to go to North Cape, but the excursion is cancelled as there has been a car accident on the road and it couldn't be cleared on time (as I recall, these things take time here. I hope everybody is allright).

L'arrivée à quai est délicate car il n'y a pas beaucoup de latitude pour la manœuvre... Le quai est juste de la bonne longueur pour le bateau.

Getting docked is a delicate operation as there is little room for maneuver,  the quay is just the same length as the ship.

Quand on repart (14h45) il fait déjà bien sombre, le ciel est toujours couvert. Comme pour l'arrivée, l'arrière du bateau passe bien près des gros chalutiers. Même si les manœuvres sur ces gros bateaux sont facilitées par rapport au MS Lofoten par la présence de propulseurs d'étrave, ça reste quand même toujours impressionnant à regarder.

When we leave (2.45pm) it is already pretty dark (accentuated by the overcast sky). Once again, the rear of the ship is quite close to the trawler ships. Even if the maneuvers on the bigger ships are easier than on MS Lofoten, thanks to the bow thrusters, it is still pretty impressive to watch.
