Jour 18 - Cap Horn

Le deuxième jour il y a un peu plus de vent, en particulier lorsqu’on arrive près du Cap Horn, mais le capitaine nous offre quand même le détour. Et en plus on a eu de la chance, parce que les autorités chiliennes autorisent le bateau à venir à un mile du fameux caillou ! Beaucoup d'oiseaux, le monument aux marins, le phare... Un coup de sirène, voilà, on est cap-hornier. C'est un peu de la triche, je le reconnais, mais ça fait quelque chose quand même!

On the second sea day there is more wind, especially when we approach Cape Horn, but not enough to prevent the captain from offering us the detour. And we are lucky today, the Chilean authorities have allowed us to come as close as one mile of the famous rock! Many birds, the monument to sailors lost at sea, the lighthouse... The ship's horn sounds, we've rounded Cape Horn! It's a bit of a cheat, I know, but still it's an exciting and moving moment.

A 17h cocktail d’adieu du capitaine, suivi d’une vente aux enchères au profit du programme de dératisation de la Géorgie du Sud. Des passagers chinois achètent le pavillon Hurtigruten qui a flotté au dessus du bateau pendant tout le voyage (et signé par tout l’équipage) pour $1000. La carte marine utilisée à la passerelle (avec tache de café authentique et tout) partira en Allemagne pour $1700. Ensuite ça commence vraiment à sentir la fin, il faut sortir les valises avant 23h, le pilote argentin sera à bord à 3h du matin, on arrive à Ushuaia à 7h, dernier diner, on fait les au revoir, c’est triste…

Late afternoon is the captain's farewell cocktail, followed by an auction to help the rat eradication program in South Georgia. A Chinese passenger buys the Hurtigruten flag which has floated above the ship during the whole trip (and signed by every crew member) for $1000. The marine map that was used in the bridge (complete with authentic coffee stains) goes to Germany for $1700. And then it really feels like the voyage is coming to an end, we have to get the suitcases out before 23.00, the pilot will be on board at 3, we should arrive in Ushuaia at 7. Last dinner, goodbyes, it's really sad and doesn't feel real.
