Jour 15 : Station Vernadsky

Il était prévu de débarquer à la station ukrainienne Vernadsky, qui est toute proche mais entre elle et nous il y a l'étendue de glace sur laquelle Podorange est amarrée. Pour ne pas lui causer de souci, il faudra faire un grand tour autour des ilots et comme il y a de la glace partout, ça n'est pas gagné. Les Polarcirkel boats doivent repousser des plaques de glace, et c'est assez sportif donc les conducteurs ont bien du mérite (et c'est aussi un grand plus du Fram, d'avoir ces petits bateaux rigides et costauds capable de se frayer un chemin dans la glace). Le débarquement prend plus de temps que prévu à cause des conditions de navigation mais finalement c'est notre tour vers 12h30. On a droit à une chouette balade pour y aller, du coup, entre glace et ilots!

A landing at the ukranian research station Vernadsky was planned. It's quite close to where we are moored, but in between them and us is the large ice sheet to which Podorange is anchored. To protect their anchorage, Polarcirkel boats will have to take a long route around the islands and in between the ice, and at first it's not sure that it will be possible. The PCB have to push their way through the ice and it's quite a technical feat, hats off to the drivers (it's a big plus for the Fram to have these sturdy boats able to break through thin ice). The landing take more time than anticipated, but finally it can be done and it's our turn around 12.30. Bonus point : a nice PCB cruise between islands and ice!

On est accueilli très gentiment par les 8 ukrainiens qui sont là depuis le mois d'avril, ils nous font visiter la station. Cette année je crois qu'on est le premier bateau à pouvoir arriver jusqu'à eux. C'est l'ancienne station britannique Faraday vendue à l'Ukraine en 1996 pour une livre sterling symbolique, à l'avantage en fait des deux parties, car sinon les britanniques auraient dû entièrement démanteler la station. Ils ont du coup tout laissé, meubles, matériel, et ça n'a pas dû énormément changer (y compris le pub! Un vrai pub anglais complet avec fléchettes et tout au sud du 65ème parallèle S, sauf qu'on y boit de la vodka maintenant). Il y a même un petit magasin de souvenirs et un bureau de poste! Si les cartes doivent repartir en Ukraine avec la relève en avril, elles ne sont pas près d'arriver. On en a posté une pour voir (on s'est posté une carte à chaque étape en fait, en plus de toute celles qu'on a envoyé à la famille et aux copains). Les recherches ici portent surtout sur le changement climatique, l'étude de la couche d'ozone (et le géomagnétisme terrestre, si j'ai bien compris).

The 8 ukranian scientists, here since april, welcome us very kindly and offer us a tour of the station. I think that we are the first ship this year to be able to reach the station. Vernadsky is the former british base Faraday, which was sold to Ukraine in 1996 for one symbolic sterling pound. This sale was actually in both countries' interest, because if UK had simply abandonned the station, they would have had to dismember it completely, for a much greater cost. Everything was left behind, furniture, equipment, and it probably hasn't changed much. They even left the pub! A real british pub, complete with dart board and pool table, of course the southernmost pub in the world, with vodka now instead of whisky. There is also a little souvenir shop and a post office! We attempt to post ourselves a postcard, but we understand it has to wait for the changing of the crew in April, so we're not holding our breath. Scientific research here is mostly about climate change and ozone layer (and earth magnetism if I understood correctly).

On est quasiment les derniers à revenir à bord, en slalomant à nouveau entre les icebergs et les ilots, et en croisant les kayakistes qui ont certainement fait une très belle balade dans ces conditions idéales et ce paysage incroyable. Le temps qu'ils reviennent à bord, et c'est assez vite le départ.

We are amongst the last ones to come back on board, after another cruise in the midst of islands and icebergs, and we encounter this day's kayakers, who have probably had a great time given the ideal conditions and the incredible landscape. We leave as soon as they are back on board.

PS : après notre retour, et suite aux évènements en Ukraine, je pensais (accessoirement) que tout espoir de voir arriver la carte postale était perdue... Eh ben non, elle est arrivée, et bien avant avril. Par quel circuit est-elle passée, mystère... Je me demandais aussi si les occupants de Vernadsky allaient bien être relevés, mais apparemment une nouvelle mission scientifique a bien été envoyée en avril 2014 comme prévu...

PS : after our return, and following the events in Ukraine, I wondered (on a shallow note) about our postcard and thought that all hope was lost for it. But surprise, it actually arrived, and much sooner than the expected April... Its circuit is a mystery. I was also wondering if the Vernadsky crew would be relieved, but it seems that the next scientific mission was indeed sent in April 2014 as expected...
